Copyright And The Perioperative Nurse, Helen Hough, Kristen Priddy Jun 2012

Copyright And The Perioperative Nurse, Helen Hough, Kristen Priddy

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

Every time a perioperative nurse gives a patient printed instructions to take home, that nurse is involved with issues related to copyright. When a person makes photocopies to share with others, downloads a file or graphic to use at work, provides handouts at an in-service or a class, or writes for publication, the person is involved with copyright regulations. A basic understanding of why copyright exists, what it involves, and how it impacts the health care provider is important. Knowledge of the opportunities related to copyright fair use allows some flexibility. Failure to abide by copyright regulations can financially impact …

Cyber Diving: Information Searching, Helen Hough

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

As health care providers, we want to be able to provide the best care to our patients. Occasionally we observe that some caring process may not be the most effective it could or should be. Some of these processes are direct patient interactions, disease prevention, and intervention, but the idea of best care can be related to the timeliness and cost of that care. Best care is based on evidence indicating that the care provided is the best that can be done and that it is done at the most appropriate level. This evidence is derived through research and expert …

Gen X Meets Theory X: What New Scholars Want, Cathy Trower May 2012

Gen X Meets Theory X: What New Scholars Want, Cathy Trower

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

“If they can’t understand that I want a kick-ass career and a kick-ass life, then I don’t want to work here,” sums up how many Generation X’ers (born between 1965 and 1980) view their workplace, according to Lancaster and Stillman (2002, p. 107). Further, “Why does it matter when I come and go, as long as I get the work done?” (p. 114). As a group, Gen X’ers are willing to work hard but want to decide when, where, and how. As this generation enters the professoriate in large numbers, some academic institutions may be wondering what hit them. Gen …

Academic Freedom, Contingent Faculty, And Social Rectitude, David Austin Bingler

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

“If education is the cornerstone of the structure of society and if progress in scientific knowledge is essential to civilization, few things can be more important than to enhance the dignity of the scholar’s profession, with a view to attracting into it’s ranks [professionals] of the highest ability, sound learning, and of strong and independent character.” (American Association of University Professors, 2010, p.294) The American Association of University Professors’ 1915 Declaration of Principles on Academic Freedom and Academic Tenure hold true for nearly all faculty members in higher education, with the exception of contingent faculty. Today, contingent faculty members make …

Advising Style Perceptions And Preferences Of Students And Advisors., Gladys Patricia Brown Jordan May 2012

Advising Style Perceptions And Preferences Of Students And Advisors., Gladys Patricia Brown Jordan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The best style of advising to offer students has been questioned over and over. The literature review revealed uncertainty related to national surveys of advisors and students and encouraged smaller institutional reviews. The Academic Advising Inventory (Winston and Sandor, 1984b), was administered to a proportionate to size random sample of advisors (faculty and professional) and then to the advisees of the advisors who responded to the survey. Variables of interest for advisors included age, gender, type (faculty or professional), and college. Variables of interest for students included gender, ethnicity, age, classification, generational status, and GPA. A standard multiple regression, one-way …

Citation Creation Resources And Faculty/Student Preferences: A Report, Benjamin R. Harris, Anne Jumonville

Library Faculty Research

After reviewing the RefWorks bibliographic management software’s usage statistics in comparison to its cost, and after considering the impact of difficulties with generating accurate RefWorks bibliographies in the MLA and APA styles, a number of librarians suggested that the collection of information on Trinity students’ resource preferences and citation behaviors would be valuable. A brief survey was devised (a) to determine whether or not students and faculty continue to use RefWorks and (b) to collect information about additional resources that students and faculty may use as part of their “bibliographic behaviors.”

Organizational Citizenship Behaviors In Higher Education: Examining The Relationships Between Behaviors And Performance Outcomes For Individuals And Institutions, Kevin Jimmy Rose

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) have been described as employee behaviors that are not required by job descriptions, are not formally rewarded, and contribute positively to the organization. Previous research has shown that OCBs are related to both individual and organizational performance. Given the importance of OCBs to individual and organizational effectiveness, the purpose for conducting the study was to describe OCBs in the higher education context, describe the relationships between OCBs and various aspects of faculty and staff performance, and explore the extent to which institutional leaders should be concerned with the OCBs of both faculty and professional staff. The …

Social Networking And Faculty Discipline: A Pennsylvania Case Points Toward Confrontational Times, Requiring Collective Bargaining Attention, James Ottavio Castagnera, John Lanza Iv

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

While social-networking sites like Facebook are still relatively new to the working world, employers monitoring their employee’s activities and conduct outside the workplace is not. The most alluring aspects of social-networking sites is the ease in which an account can be created and maintained, the personalization options they present to the user, and a uniquely 21st century way of keeping in contact with friends and family. Social-networking sites are truly a wonder of the modern age, where by typing out a few sentences, uploading some photographs, videos and making some friend requests, one can present his or her entire life …

Technology’S Impact On Student – Faculty Interaction: Issues For Collective Bargaining, Mark Piwinsky, Mary Beth Leidman, Mathew Mckeague

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Today’s faculty confront challenges that are reshaping their workload and creating new demands and expectations. A decline in the proportion of tenured faculty and an increased reliance on temporary faculty is problematic in a time of strong enrollment growth. The American Association of University Professors (Trends in Faculty Status, 2007) reports the proportion of full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty has declined from 56.8% in fall 1975 to 31.2% in fall 2007. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics (2005, 2008) show enrollments increased from 17.92 million in fall 2005 to 19.57 million in fall 2008. Schaffhauser (2010) reports that …

Transmission Of Family Health Information Within Families, Patricia Newcomb, Barbara M. Raudonis, Diane Snow, Denise Cauble

Nursing Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Background and Aims: A comprehensive family health history still offers the best data for calculating risk of most complex diseases, but lack of informant accuracy hinders its use. Young adults transitioning from the parental home to more independent university life may be poor historians. The purpose of this study was to describe the quality of family health information acquired by young university students and to characterize the process by which they learn family health facts. Methods: Thematic content analysis was applied to interviews with undergraduate students enrolled in diverse classes across disciplines at a public US university. Results: Two processes, …
