Decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM) contains complex tissue-specific components that work in concert to promote tissue repair and constructive remodeling and has been used experimentally and clinically to accelerate epithelial wound repair, leading us to hypothesize that lung-derived ECM could mitigate acute lung injury. To explore the therapeutic potential of ECM for noninvasive delivery to the lung, we decellularized and solubilized porcine lung ECM, then characterized the composition, concentration, particle size and stability of the preparation. The ECM preparation at 3.2 mg/mL with average particle size <3 µm was tested in vitro on human A549 lung epithelial cells exposed to 95% O2 for 24 hours, and in vivo by tracheal instillation or nebulization into the lungs of rats exposed intermittently or continuously to 90% O2 for a cumulative 72 hours. Our results showed that the preparation was enriched in collagen, reduced in glycosaminoglycans, and contained various bioactive molecules. Particle size was concentration-dependent. Compared to the respective controls treated with cell culture medium in vitro or saline in vivo, ECM inhalation normalized cell survival and alveolar morphology, and reduced hyperoxia-induced apoptosis and oxidative damage. This proof-of-concept study established the methodology, feasibility and therapeutic potential of exogenous solubilized ECM for pulmonary cytoprotection, possibly as an adjunct or potentiator of conventional therapy.

Service providers participated in semi-structured interviews exploring these questions: Are service providers aware of instances of school sabotage occurring? What are the tactics that service providers have observed? What do service providers identify as the key impacts of school sabotage? The following are the themes: (1) tactics of abusive partners include disruption of financial aid, physical violence or stalking at school, and disrupting academic efforts; (2) survivors experience consequences, including emotional and academic impacts; (3) abusers display emotions including jealousy, resentment, and insecurity; and (4) many survivors use education as a pathway …

Monetary Compensation Of Full-Time Faculty At American Public Regional Universities: The Impact Of Geography And The Existence Of Collective Bargaining, Stephen G. Katsinas, Johnson A. Ogun, Nathaniel J. Bray Jan 2017

Monetary Compensation Of Full-Time Faculty At American Public Regional Universities: The Impact Of Geography And The Existence Of Collective Bargaining, Stephen G. Katsinas, Johnson A. Ogun, Nathaniel J. Bray

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This paper examines monetary compensation of 127,222 full-time faculty employed by the 390 regional universities in the United States who are members of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Compensation data published by the U.S. Department of Education and organizations concerned with faculty, including the American Association of University Professors and others, typically lump all four-year public university faculty together, ignoring well-known differences in teaching workloads at different types of public four-year universities (four instead of two courses taught each term, etc.). Further, many compensation studies do not examine fringe benefits, which are 30 percent of total monetary …

For the last few years, molten salt nanomaterials have attracted many scientists for their enhanced specific heat by doping a minute concentration of nanoparticles (up to 1% by weight). Likewise, enhancing the specific heat of liquid media is important in many aspects of engineering such as engine oil, coolant, and lubricant. However, such enhancement in specific heat was only observed for molten salts, yet other engineering fluids such as water, ethylene glycol, and oil have shown a decrease of specific heat with doped nanoparticles. Recent studies have shown that the observed specific heat enhancement resulted from unique nanostructures that were …

Counselor Education Unplugged? An Exploration Of Current Attitudes Surrounding The Use Of Online Learning As A Modality In Graduate Counselor Education, Eric James Perry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation qualitatively investigates counselor education faculty perceptions regarding online courses or programs and the overall perception of counselor education faculty regarding the effectiveness of online learning. A total of 154 counselor educators completed the CEATOLS instrument, a survey designed to capture demographic information, perceptions of effectiveness of online learning in counselor education, and concerns related to online learning in counselor education. Results indicate that, overall, counselor educators have a markedly lower perception of the effectiveness of online counselor education courses than of traditional Analysis of the concerns expressed by counselor educators reveal a five-factor structure similar to that which …

Predicting Faculty Integration Of Faith And Learning, Kimberly Hardin Jan 2017

Predicting Faculty Integration Of Faith And Learning, Kimberly Hardin

Teacher Education

Concern regarding the secularization of Christian higher education has

prompted researchers to investigate the extent that faith and learning

is integrated at a faculty level and what factors might predict faculty

integration (Lyon, Beaty, Parker, & Mencken, 2005). This research

attempted to replicate Lyon et al.’s (2005) logistic regression model

predicting faculty integration of faith using survey responses gathered

as part of Phase II of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities

(CCCU) Denominational Study (Rine, Glanzer, & Davignon, 2013).

Respondents included 2,074 faculty from 55 institutions. The first

model used in this study suggested that the most powerful predictors …

In 2008, the Section on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar of the American Bar Association commenced a comprehensive review of the accreditation standards for American legal education. By July of 2011, most of the revised standards and rules of procedure had been drafted, discussed and approved by the section's Standards Review Committee ("SRC") and were ready for submission to the council. However, the SRC's revised accreditation policies were not submitted for action by the council until 2014, more than six years after the review process began, as a result of decisions made by section leaders. The revised standards …

Key Performance Indicators Of Part-Time Employees Teaching Online, Mark L. Alexander Jan 2017

Key Performance Indicators Of Part-Time Employees Teaching Online, Mark L. Alexander

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Online learning has caused a seismic shift in higher Education since its rise beginning at the turn of the century. A portion of that impact has been on the ascent of the part-time employee teaching online. Adjunct instructors account for the overwhelming majority of the faculty providing Education to these online learners. Because an instructors performance impacts students learning and their resulting end of course evaluation has such a bearing upon that persons employment, it is imperative to identify key performance indicators (KPIs) of employees teaching online. The problem addressed by this study was to determine the factors that affected …

Detecting Between-Groups Heteroscedasticity In Moderated Multiple Regression With A Continuous Predictor And A Categorical Moderator: A Monte Carlo Study, Patrick J. Rosopa, Amber N. Schroeder, Jessica L. Doll

Psychology Faculty Publications - Archive

Moderated multiple regression (MMR) is frequently used to test moderation hypotheses in the behavioral and social sciences. In MMR with a categorical moderator, between-groups heteroscedasticity is not uncommon and can inflate Type I error rates or reduce statistical power. Compared with research on remedial procedures that can mitigate the effects of this violated assumption, less research attention has focused on statistical procedures that can be used to detect between-groups heteroscedasticity. In the current article, we briefly review such procedures. Then, using Monte Carlo methods, we compare the performance of various procedures that can be used to detect between-groups heteroscedasticity in …

This chapter discusses aspects of Undergraduates Speak: Our Rights and Access, a library-initiated and student-led pilot project aimed at advancing educational initiatives in the realm of scholarly communication. The project provided undergraduate students with opportunities to engage in experiential learning. Experiential learning, commonly defined as "learning by doing,"emphasizes the role that experience and self-reflection play in the learning process. In recent years, universities across the country have increasingly committed to providing such opportunities for undergraduate students. One reason for this emphasis is because experiential activities have a demonstrated impact on student retention and engagement. Among these high-impact practices are undergraduate …
