A Phenomenological Study On Ethnic Studies California Community College Faculty, Anthony Guaracha
A Phenomenological Study On Ethnic Studies California Community College Faculty, Anthony Guaracha
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to add to the research about ethnic studies faculty. This study’s goal was to understand the experiences of ethnic studies faculty, post AB-1460. Prior to AB 1460, few colleges offered tenure track positions and few ethnic studies departments existed Ethnic studies faculty increased at college campuses throughout the state after AB 1460 passed. While many studies focus on ethnic studies, few center on faculty and their experiences. This study employed a qualitative research design, and it was a phenomenological study and used the lens of critical race theory. 12 full-time, tenure track faculty members …
Nursing Faculty Experiences Of Teaching Dementia Care: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Jeannie Simpson
Nursing Faculty Experiences Of Teaching Dementia Care: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Jeannie Simpson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the experiences of nursing faculty teaching dementia care to nursing students in Texas. The theory guiding this study was Kolb’s experiential learning theory as it offers a structured framework for examining how experiences lead to learning. This theory also introduced the concept of the Experiential Educator profile, specifically delineating the role of educators in facilitating knowledge acquisition (Kolb, 2014). This study bridged the gap in existing literature regarding the experiences of nursing faculty in teaching dementia care to nursing students and provided a comprehensive look at dementia education in nursing schools. …
Faculty Perception Of Lean Thinking In Higher Education, Mikhail Shilov
Faculty Perception Of Lean Thinking In Higher Education, Mikhail Shilov
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There are many challenges that higher education institutions (HEI) are facing that include rising cost of education, reduction in student population, competition from other universities and alternative educational platforms, as well as reduction in public confidence. To stay competitive, HEIs could utilize performance improvement methods that have been proven to be advantageous in manufacturing and other industries, and one of these methodologies is Lean. Application of Lean in higher education is still in the early stages of development, the methods have been mostly used to improve administrative processes, but not as much in the core educational processes, teaching and research. …

Using Exercise To Counteract The Effects Of Social Media, Brandy Whitford, Pelo Zinyana, Patrick J. Cooper
Using Exercise To Counteract The Effects Of Social Media, Brandy Whitford, Pelo Zinyana, Patrick J. Cooper
Student Publications and Presentations
Over 90% of young adults use social media, and excessive use correlates with lower self-esteem, while exercise enhances it (McAuley et al., 1997; Twenge et al., 2018). This study examines how social media use and exercise influence self-esteem. We hypothesized that social media use would negatively predict self-esteem while exercise would have a positive association. Participants (N = 583; 395 females; M age = 24.87, SD = 11.08) completed demographic surveys, time-use assessments, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. We measured social media use by summing daily minutes across platforms and recorded exercise frequency as weekly days of 15+ minutes of …

Systematic Abuse In Women’S Soccer: A Comprehensive Analysis And Call For Reform, Emma Steinweiss, Arantza Espinosa Valencia, Sherry Andre
Student Publications and Presentations
This poster presentation examines the systemic abuse in women’s soccer, a crisis that persists despite growing awareness. Through an analysis of the Sally Q. Yates Report (2022) and multiple case studies, we assess patterns of misconduct, failures of governing bodies, and the institutional responses that have enabled abuse. Notable cases include Jennifer Hermoso’s non-consensual kiss by Luis Rubiales (AP News, 2024) and sexual misconduct allegations against Bruce Mwape (McElroy, 2024). The careers of Rory Dames and Paul Riley exemplify how abusive coaches were repeatedly protected despite years of documented complaints (U.S. Soccer Federation, 2022). Additionally, the abusive coaching tactics of …

Sustainability In Aviation, Nicholas Cruz, Jennifer A. Torres
Student Publications and Presentations
Sustainable Aviation Fuel, often referred to as SAF, is precisely what it means. There have been increasingly more conversations regarding SAF and its benefits for the aviation industry. The aviation industry is known to be one of the most significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions (World Wildlife Fund, n.d.). One research shows that global aviation emissions in 2023 alone added up to 820 million metric tons of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere (Tiseo, 2024a). Numerous airlines have already set goals for switching to SAF, as seen with United’s Flight Fund and Virgin Atlantic Airways’ Flight 100 (United, 2023b) (Virgin …

Trust In Scientists, Climate Policy, And Government Skepticism: A Global Re-Analysis, Lily Day Drons, Félix E. Rivera-Mariani
Student Publications and Presentations
Despite overwhelming scientific evidence on climate change, skepticism persists, influencing public resistance to policies and governmental inaction. This study analyzes survey data (doi.org/10.1038/s41597-024-04100-7) from 68 countries to explore public trust in scientists, sources of science information, emotional responses to climate change, and policy support. Findings indicate that while the public generally trusts scientists’ expertise and intelligence, concerns remain about their transparency and ethics. Trust in scientists is 23% higher than distrust and positively correlates with climate policy support (r = 0.30), whereas political conservatism is linked to lower trust (β = -0.0258, p < 0.001). Science communication plays a key role—TV/radio and news websites/apps are the most trusted sources, followed by social media. Regression analysis shows TV/radio increases trust by ~4%, while news websites/apps increase trust by 3.7%. Social media has a weaker effect (β = 0.00005, p > 0.05). Emotionally, anxiety and helplessness are felt …

Educational Disparities And Cardiovascular Disease Risk: Insights From The Framingham Study, Tashoy Campbell, Félix E. Rivera-Mariani
Student Publications and Presentations
Education influences decisions that impact the overall well-being, including cardiovascular health. However, the extent to which educational disparities affect cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk remains insufficiently explored. This study re-analyzed sample data (n=11,626) from the Framingham Study, a landmark epidemiological cohort initiated in 1948 that has provided extensive longitudinal data on cardiovascular health. A sizable proportion of participants reported low educational attainment (~30% with 0–11 years of schooling), with men slightly more likely than women to have lower education levels. Hypertension was the most prevalent CVD condition (~70%), followed by coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. Logistic regression analyses revealed that …

Antibiotic Resistance In Yogurt Bacteria, Kevin Sosa, Rafaela Oda, Max Werner, Cassandra S. Korte
Student Publications and Presentations
Probiotics are live microorganisms that benefit gut health in their host. Antibiotic resistance refers to the ability of bacteria becoming tolerant to antibiotic treatments. As the antibiotics are now useless, this resistance can cause difficulties in the treatment of bacterial infections. This study investigated the difference in antibiotic resistance in bacteria found in a probiotic yogurt vs. greek yogurt by testing the effectiveness of five antibiotics: penicillin, ampicillin, tetracycline, streptomycin, and chloramphenicol. We are investigating the research question: Is there a significant difference in antibiotic resistance in bacteria from probiotic plain whole milk yogurt vs. non-probiotic greek yogurt? Using sterile …

To what extent does using skincare products contribute to human exposure to phthalates? Phthalates are commonly used in personal care products as fragrance stabilizers but have been linked to endocrine disruption and other health concerns. These compounds can also leach from the plastic containers into the products inside. With increased consumer awareness, it is vital to investigate the presence of phthalates in everyday consumer products, such as cleansers, which are used in daily hygiene routines. This study determines whether phthalates are present in multiple brands of cleanser products and compares their levels across different formulations. Liquid-liquid extraction followed by high-pressure …

Adapting To Ai: The Evolving Role Of Faculty In Higher Education, Ronald R. Danault
Faculty Publications
Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the face of higher education, and there are important issues regarding the future of the faculty (Stoerger, 2024). Although there are concerns about the impact of AI on the conventional faculty roles in teaching, assessment, and administration, these tools are now being adopted in learning processes. Rather than dismissing AI as a threat, it acts as a catalyst for reshaping the way faculty members teach with the help of AI and, hence, become facilitators of the learning process (Haoyang & Towne, 2025).
This paper aims to discuss the integration of AI in the higher education …
