Nursing Faculty And Care Of The Dying, Jessi Balagtas May 2018

Nursing Faculty And Care Of The Dying, Jessi Balagtas

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Background: There is a demand for effective and efficient palliative and end of life nursing care that will meet the needs of the aging Baby Boomer generation. Though advancement has been made, palliative and end of life care for the seriously ill adult is still lacking. That deficiency can be traced to deficiency in nursing education. Further still, nursing faculty attitudes, knowledge and self-efficacy in palliative care may present a barrier for adequate palliative care nursing curriculum.

Objective: Explore the current knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy of nursing faculty regarding care for seriously ill adults.

Methods and Design: A quantitative, descriptive …

Student loan debt is the most common form of debt in the United States today outside of mortgage debt. When You're "It": Preserving And Sharing The Family Archivespreserving And Sharing The Family Archives, Leslie Wagner

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

Initially using digitization to make historical photographs, oral histories, and moving images accessible to the public in her role as a professional archivist, Leslie Wagner found it necessary to apply those same concepts as family historian, genealogist, and keeper of the family archives. As the eldest child, the tasks fell to her naturally, but when serving as executrix for her parents' estate (2016-2017), she came into possession of several generations of correspondence, photographs, film, audiotapes, and documents. Beyond the physical aspects of preserving these items, she was also challenged with the need to share the family history with the younger …

Exploration Of The Qualities And Interactions Of Post-Secondary Faculty Identified As Exemplary By Students With Support Services, Joan E. Green Apr 2018

Exploration Of The Qualities And Interactions Of Post-Secondary Faculty Identified As Exemplary By Students With Support Services, Joan E. Green

Special Education ETDs

Recent statistics indicate that approximately 11% of undergraduate college students seek out disability support services (National Center for Education Statistics, 20015). The review of research indicated a lack of research regarding faculty in postsecondary education and their knowledge of disabilities and services, experiences of individuals with disabilities, and in particular, experiences and interactions toward students with support services attending postsecondary educational institutions. The purpose of this case study was to explore the classroom experiences of seven faculty nominated by students with support services as exemplary at a four-year public university. The semi-structured interviews focused on the abilities of students with …

Take This, It's Free: Digital Media In The Public Domain, Adam Northam, Michael Barera

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

Digital collections have been a part of Texas A&M University at Commerce Libraries holdings since 2006 and we want to ensure our digital content is as accessible as possible. In 2016, to expand our audience, identified images from a selected digital collection documenting university history that had entered the public domain. This project's goals are to provide people with high quality digital content that can be used and shared freely, and to determine if placing digital media in the public domain will direct more traffic back to the source material, which currently resides in our Northeast Texas Digital Collections, thus …

Personal Care Products: Where Are The Phthalates?, Tara Lunsford, Erika L. Doctor, Cassandra S. Korte

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Phthalates are chemicals that are commonly used as a plasticizer in personal care products. This class of compounds is added to help prevent products from drying out. Phthalates have been shown to have potential negative impacts on reproductive organs, cause birth defects, effect the endocrine system, as well as causing other ill effects. For example, previous work found that phthalates can have an effect on the endocrine system of adolescent individuals. In an intervention study, phthalate exposure was reduced when these products were not being used. The purpose of the present study is to examine phthalate abundance in personal care …

Government Documents Collection Development Project: A Monumental Task, Troy Black, Sunday Phillips

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

BACKGROUND UTA Libraries was designated a federal depository in 1963. For 50 years the library received physical copies of federal documents. In 2014, the library stopped receiving print documents and instead started receiving electronic copies only. The documents collection that the library had been collecting for 50 years had never been weeded properly and approximately 50% of the material on the shelves were not cataloged and therefore, not discoverable. The physical collection occupied 31 ranges of shelving (= 3,780 shelves or 10,080 ft.). There was also a sizable print collection housed at the library's offsite storage facility (Library Collection Depository). …

Expanding The Intellectual Property Knowledge Base At University Libraries: Collaborating With Patent And Trademark Resource Centers, Martin K. Wallace, Suzanne Reinman

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

Patent and Trademark Resource Centers are located in libraries throughout the U.S., with 43 being in academic libraries. With the importance of incorporating a knowledge of intellectual property (IP) and patent research in university curricula nationwide, this study developed and evaluated a partnership program to increase the understanding of IP and patent searching methods at universities that do not headquarter a PTRC. This article describes the methods for establishing those partnerships, summarizes their results, and offers a list of best practices and lessons learned for establishing future partnerships.

A Method For Inferring Regional Origins Of Neurodegeneration, Justin Torok, Pedro D. Maia, Fon Powell, Sneha Pandya, Ashish Raj

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, is characterized by the emergence and spread of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, causing widespread neurodegeneration. Though the progression of Alzheimer’s disease is considered to be stereotyped, the significant variability within clinical populations obscures this interpretation on the individual level. Of particular clinical importance is understanding where exactly pathology, e.g. tau, emerges in each patient and how the incipient atrophy pattern relates to future spread of disease. Here we demonstrate a newly developed graph theoretical method of inferring prior disease states in patients with Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment using an …

Using An Engaged Scholarship Symposium To Change Perceptions: Evaluation Results, Sapna Varkey, Olga Smirnova, Tara Lee Gallien

Journal of Extension

Engaged scholarship (ES) entails a symbiotic relationship between the community and the university. This article reports results from an evaluation of an ES symposium Eastern Carolina University held to increase awareness of ES as a means for integrating research, teaching, and service and to potentially change unfavorable perceptions about ES through education and testimonials. After the symposium, participants were more likely to suggest that the university should put more weight on ES. On the basis of our findings, we believe that a symposium designed to encourage open dialogue among faculty, administrators, and Extension professionals can lead to increased awareness of …

New Study The South Essay By Dr. Adam Gussow "Blues Expressiveness And The Blues Ethos", Admin

Blog Posts

The blues -- as a palette of intense, often contradictory feelings; a range of social conditions heavily inflected by blackness and southernness; an expressive form encompassing literature as well as music; and a philosophical orientation towards experience -- are a more complex cultural phenomenon than some realize. This essay unpacks the latter two concepts: blues expressiveness and the blues ethos. Blues expressiveness is constituted by a range of cultural practices, including the AAB stanza, call and response procedure, vocalizations, blues-idiomatic language, and signifying. The blues ethos, too, offers multiple strategies for surviving bad times by refusing to reify the down-ness …
