A Faculty Workshop On Developing Students As Discipline-Situated Researchers, William Badke, Elizabeth Kreiter, Qinqin Zhang
Communications in Information Literacy
The reference librarians of Trinity Western University have a strong mission-driven commitment to teach information literacy, but there is a significant contrast between the amount of instruction they can provide and the demanding task of developing all students as skilled researchers. The growing teach-the-teacher model suggested an option to enlist faculty in providing a larger portion of information literacy instruction themselves. With strong support from academic administration, three librarians devised an initial faculty workshop as part of the university’s faculty professional development series, followed by four detailed weekly sessions. They based their activities on several factors: first, faculty members would …

Implementing Open Educational Resources In Colleges And Universities: A Literature Review, D. Laverne Hill, Taralynn Hartsell, Jamie L. Workman, Amy Smith
Georgia Library Quarterly
The use of Open Educational Resources (OER) is becoming increasingly widespread in higher education institutions as the ease of use, equitable access, and the cost-free availability makes OER a viable option for classroom materials. Incorporating OER into the curriculum can be both beneficial and challenging for faculty. Because librarians are skilled and efficient in finding adequate resources to supplement learning, they prove to be an asset when striving to implement an OER initiative in the institution. While faculty would be the primary group to introduce many of the OER to students, it takes a collaborative effort between faculty and librarians …

Hbcu Faculty Job Satisfaction: Implications For Effective Higher Education Leadership, Demissie Karorsa, Monica E. Allen
Hbcu Faculty Job Satisfaction: Implications For Effective Higher Education Leadership, Demissie Karorsa, Monica E. Allen
Journal of Research Initiatives
Studies show that the success of organizations typically depends on the extent to which leaders promote their employees' job satisfaction and commitment (Kouzes & Posner, 2007). As a result, employees' job satisfaction has received significant attention from business leaders and researchers (Belias & Kouestelios, 2014; Cakmak et al., 2015; Hesli & Lee, 2013; Seifert & Umbach, 2008). Most businesses recognize that enthusiastic, committed, and satisfied employees add value by enhancing customer satisfaction and retention, increasing productivity, and working toward the long-term success of their organizations (Choi, 2016; Cook, 2008). This survey sought to understand Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) …

Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the motivators and hygienes that affect the job satisfaction and classroom efficacy of community college faculty in Arkansas. Using Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, this research found motivating factors, such as the nature of the work, autonomy and independence, and professional relationships to be associated with overall job satisfaction of the participating faculty. Conversely, hygiene factors, namely salary, funding for travel for professional development, and communication with administration were associated with faculty job dissatisfaction. The findings indicate that overall faculty are satisfied with their jobs and do not see non-instructional responsibilities having a negative …

An Analysis Of Factors Influencing The Success Of Dual-Enrollment Students Through The Perspectives Of Faculty And Counselors, Starlett Mack
Student Theses and Dissertations
“An Analysis of Factors Influencing the Success of Dual-Enrollment Students Through the Perspectives of Faculty and Counselors” is a qualitative study. Dual enrollment has increased enrollment by offering opportunities to a broader audience. However, portions of this broader audience may be unprepared to face the challenges of being dual-enrollment students. A lack of preparation could cause increased anxiety, feelings of inadequacy, and failure to complete classes. This qualitative case study explored the perceptions and practices of counselors and teachers who staffed a dual-enrollment program at a Texas community college. In particular, it sought to understand the collective impact of community …

Faculty Feel It Too: The Emotions Of Teaching Through Service‐Learning, Carrie W. Lecrom, Lynn Pelco, Jill W. Lassiter
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
The authors used Coles’ (1993) framework of emotional satisfactions and hazards to examine the experiences of faculty members teaching service-learning classes for the first time. Seven faculty from two institutions completed monthly reflections and focus groups for one year. Qualitative analysis indicated that faculty experienced several of Coles’ emotional satisfactions and hazards, were prone to emotional contagion, and depended on colleague mentoring to navigate the experiences of using service-learning pedagogy for the first time.

Understanding Perspectives Of Power In A College Mathematics Classroom, Laura Seeberger
Understanding Perspectives Of Power In A College Mathematics Classroom, Laura Seeberger
Honors College Theses
Power is embedded in teacher and student actions within mathematics classrooms, whether that power is known or not. Incorporating equity and inclusiveness requires a deeper understanding of this power behind actions. In this study, we developed and administered a three part survey questioning college faculty and college students how they perceive power related to common actions within a college mathematics classroom. For example, participants were asked whether a college math teacher assigning homework increased, decreased, or did both to the teacher’s power; then whether this action increased, decreased, or did both to a student’s power. Analysis of 16 faculty and …

The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand how liberal arts faculty members at a small private historically black college are affected by unstable student enrollment. The institution is being affected by various states of unstable student enrollment, which naturally creates many challenges. The study utilized the hermeneutic phenomenological approach, and the cognitive appraisal theory as the theoretical framework. The cognitive appraisal theory is based on how individuals mentally process an event or a condition. In application to this study, liberal arts faculty members are in a challenging environment, and how do they mentally process it as an …
Faculty Learning Community: Advancing Faculty Academic Advising Pedagogy, Linda Jean Raynard
Faculty Learning Community: Advancing Faculty Academic Advising Pedagogy, Linda Jean Raynard
Masters Projects
Within higher educational institutions faculty may serve in a faculty advising role. The quality of faculty advising conversations can impact student’s sense of mattering and support to campus leadership, community, and beyond. Faculty, however, have competing priorities and a lack of pathological training that has prevented them from investing deeper in advising practices. Students may then miss important opportunities to initially connect with campus leaders about their curricular and co-curricular development. To better operationalize academic advising practices for faculty to use in their everyday student conversations, a faculty learning community is suggested to aid. The Faculty Learning Community: Advancing Faculty …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand completely online education’s impact on student retention for faculty at community colleges in western Pennsylvania. The theory guiding this study was Michael G. Moore’s transactional distance theory, which centers on three components of online education—structure, communication, and student autonomy. The literature review revealed these factors, and their relevant sub-factors all influence faculty’s experience and knowledge of the factors that impact student retention. The central research question for this study was as follows: What are faculty’s perceptions of completely asynchronous and synchronous education at community colleges in western Pennsylvania? This study …
