Individual Difference Theory In Faculty Development: What Faculty Developers Should Know About Style, Betty Lou Leaver, Rebecca L. Oxford
Individual Difference Theory In Faculty Development: What Faculty Developers Should Know About Style, Betty Lou Leaver, Rebecca L. Oxford
Russian Language Journal
Over the past three decades and more, growing attention has been paid to the need to tailor instruction to meet the differing learning and affective styles of students. However, little has been written about doing the same for faculty.
Typically, the purpose of faculty development is to empower new and experienced teachers by providing information, enhancing self-confidence, and developing attitudes and beliefs favorable to effective teaching. Such empowerment usually requires teachers to change their teaching behaviors— and change does not come automatically or identically to all teachers. Rather, “teachers change in areas [in which] they are already primed to change, …

This study examines the effects of innovativeness and teaching style on the decision by higherEducation faculty to adopt or not adopt a newEducational technology. The study attempts to determine a relationship between adoption or nonadoption of a course management system and either degree of innovativeness or teaching style. The study was influenced by Everett Rogers's Diffusion of Innovation theory and Anthony Grasha's Teaching Styles research. The research was undertaken on the campus of a small, private engineering institution in Indiana in the spring of 2005. A purposive sample of 30 faculty adopters and 31 faculty nonadopters of a course management …

Cases Of University Faculty Conceptions And Practices Of Teaching, Assessment And Action Research., Carol Dianne Raubenheimer 1959-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Conceptions of teaching and learning held by faculty in higher education broadly reflect two dominant approaches, those that are teacher-focused and content oriented, and those that are student-focused and learner oriented (Entwistle, Skinner, Entwistle & Orr, 2000). Conceptions of teaching may be reflected in the pedagogical choices and practices of instructors, but this has not been well established at college level. Thus, an examination of such conceptions may advance the understanding of good teaching at the college level (Fernandez-Balboa & Stiehl, 1995). Using a case study approach this research (a) examined conceptions of teaching and learning, assessment, and action research …

Assessing Student Exposure To And Use Of Computer Technologies Through An Examination Of Course Syllabi, Michael B. Madson, Timothy P. Melchert, Joan Whipp
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
A syllabus analysis instrument was developed to assist program evaluators, administrators and faculty in the identification of skills that students use as they complete their college coursework. While this instrument can be tailored for use with a variety of learning domains, we used it to assess students' use of and exposure to computer technology skills. The reliability and validity of the instrument was examined through an analysis of 88 syllabi from courses within the teacher education program and the core curriculum at a private Midwest US university. Results indicate that the instrument has good inter‐rater reliability and ratings by and …

Psychosocial Factors That Can Influence The Self-Assessment Of Function, Robert J. Gatchel
Psychosocial Factors That Can Influence The Self-Assessment Of Function, Robert J. Gatchel
Psychology Faculty Publications - Archive
What has plagued the evaluation process in this area has been the level of agreement in the wide variation in the measures used to document a construct such as pain, as well as changes in that construct as reflected in the measurement of function. The present article reviews the major psychosocial barriers to assessment/recovery that have been implicated as influencing the self-assessment of function. The following are discussed: secondary gain; secondary loss; emotional distress (such as anger, anxiety and depression); psychopathology; somatization and symptom magnification; compliance and resistance; patient comprehension/mental status; and iatrogenic effects.
