Intersections Big And Small: A Review Of Three Projects That Merge Scholarly Communication And Information Literacy, Michelle Reed

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

The field of library and information sciences has seen an increase in interest related to the "intersections" of information literacy and scholarly communication following the publication by the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) of a white paper that described the need for libraries to strengthen connections between these two critical areas of library outreach in higher education. It was reinforced by the publication of Common Ground at the Nexus of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy and followed by the development of "Two Paths Converge: Designing Educational Opportunities on the Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy," a one-day …

Exploring International Open Educational Practices, Michelle Reed, Beck Pitt, Bea De Los Arcos, Martin Weller

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

Whilst the definition of open educational resources (OER) is now relatively static with key descriptions such as the 5Rs (Wiley, 2014) or the definition developed by UNESCO (no date) being frequently referenced, how we define open educational practices (OEP) is more varied and is still under development. Definitions to date recognise that OEP is more than just the practicalities of creating OER for example (McGill 2013) whilst projects such as Opening Educational Practices in Scotland (OEPS) highlight the ethos of "social justice" as being a central driver of OEP (OEPS, no date). In this session we examine the meaning of …

Transforming First-Year Information Literacy: Understanding Authority In A Sea Of Information, Michelle Reed, Jill Becker, Stephanie Gamble, Sofia Leung

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

This panel will discuss a university library's development and implementation of a 3-day information literacy unit that was integrated into 45 sections of the university's first-year experience seminar. Since 2012, the model of support for this course was a hands-on database searching session for each section of the course. Several factors warranted the revision of the information literacy component of the course. One, the model was not sustainable. A reduction in library staff strained the library's human resources, and the number of sections of the course was anticipated to grow. Two, conducting a workshop for each section revealed vast differences …

This session discusses the implementation and management of an innovative collaboration between libraries' staff at a four-year institution of higher education and faculty and students in the university's Film and Media Studies (FMS) Department. Capitalizing on the university's experiential learning goals and strategic priorities, the libraries served as a community partner in a service-learning course on digital storytelling. The course was designed to expand students' creative practice by blending elements of theory with the "real life"practice of producing work for a client. Students in the course were grouped into teams and paired with one of four community partners; the student …

Administrator And Faculty Perceptions Of Institutional Support For Online Education In Florida's College System, Gerene M. Thompson Mar 2017

Administrator And Faculty Perceptions Of Institutional Support For Online Education In Florida's College System, Gerene M. Thompson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 30% of Florida’s college system (FCS) students are enrolled in distance learning courses (FLDOE, 2015). As FCS institutions continue to grow their online programs to meet demand, a lack of support from, and consensus among administrator and faculty stakeholders could undermine institutional efforts to sustain growth and quality standards in these programs. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine administrator and faculty perceptions of institutional support for online education in Florida’s College System. Differences in perceptions between these groups were also investigated. Additionally, this study explored if perceptions differed based on role and level of experience with …

The Role Of Pedagogical Beliefs In Emerging Technology Integration: An Exploratory Case Study Of Faculty Perspectives, Marianne Justus

The Qualitative Report

The integration of social media, mobile/wireless and Web 2.0 technologies in higher education supports student engagement locally and globally to create new knowledge using innovative strategies. However, there remains a disconnect between the positive perceptions of faculty regarding the value of integrating technology and its adoption in online contexts. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to investigate the factors that influence faculty to integrate innovative and emerging technologies, and to consider whether pedagogical beliefs influence choice and adoption of technology. Participants included graduate and undergraduate faculty members who had experience teaching online; were representative of diverse disciplines …

Heat And Water Transport In Soils And Across The Soil-Atmosphere Interface: 2. Numerical Analysis, Jan Vanderborght, Thomas Fetzer, Klaus Mosthaf, Kathleen M. Smits, Rainer Helmig

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

In an accompanying paper, we presented an overview of a wide variety of modeling concepts, varying in complexity, used to describe evaporation from soil. Using theoretical analyses, we explained the simplifications and parameterizations in the different approaches. In this paper, we numerically evaluate the consequences of these simplifications and parameterizations. Two sets of simulations were performed. The first set investigates lateral variations in vertical fluxes, which emerge from both homogeneous and heterogeneous porous media, and their importance to capturing evaporation behavior. When evaporation decreases from parts of the heterogeneous soil surface, lateral flow and transport processes in the free flow …
