This work in progress paper describes the initial stages of a project which aims to characterize the mechanisms of hidden curriculum (HC) in engineering and identify methods for exploring this phenomenon. To effectively study the complex nature of HC, this work brings together researchers with a range of expertise (sociology, engineering education, engineering, statistics, policy analysis, curriculum and instruction) to develop a holistic approach to explore HC in engineering. This work describes the process of gathering input from this multidisciplinary team as well as the literature to develop a mixed-method instrument and model to explore the mechanisms behind HC in …

Creating Online Learning Experiences: A Brief Guide To Online Courses, From Small And Private To Massive And Open, Matt Crosslin

Mavs Open Press Open Educational Resources - Archive

The process of designing online courses often focuses on the methodology of taking certain steps to produce a product (the course). We feel that learning should be an experience more than a place run by a person constrained by specific designs. The goal of this book is to provide an updated look at many of the issues that comprise the online learning experience creation process. As online learning evolves, the lines and distinctions between the various classifications of courses has blurred and often vanished. Learning contexts run the gamut from small to massive, and from closed courses to boundary-less experiences. …

When You're "It": Preserving And Sharing The Family Archivespreserving And Sharing The Family Archives, Leslie Wagner

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

Initially using digitization to make historical photographs, oral histories, and moving images accessible to the public in her role as a professional archivist, Leslie Wagner found it necessary to apply those same concepts as family historian, genealogist, and keeper of the family archives. As the eldest child, the tasks fell to her naturally, but when serving as executrix for her parents' estate (2016-2017), she came into possession of several generations of correspondence, photographs, film, audiotapes, and documents. Beyond the physical aspects of preserving these items, she was also challenged with the need to share the family history with the younger …

Exploration Of The Qualities And Interactions Of Post-Secondary Faculty Identified As Exemplary By Students With Support Services, Joan E. Green

Special Education ETDs

Recent statistics indicate that approximately 11% of undergraduate college students seek out disability support services (National Center for Education Statistics, 20015). The review of research indicated a lack of research regarding faculty in postsecondary education and their knowledge of disabilities and services, experiences of individuals with disabilities, and in particular, experiences and interactions toward students with support services attending postsecondary educational institutions. The purpose of this case study was to explore the classroom experiences of seven faculty nominated by students with support services as exemplary at a four-year public university. The semi-structured interviews focused on the abilities of students with …

Take This, It's Free: Digital Media In The Public Domain, Adam Northam, Michael Barera

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

Digital collections have been a part of Texas A&M University at Commerce Libraries holdings since 2006 and we want to ensure our digital content is as accessible as possible. In 2016, to expand our audience, identified images from a selected digital collection documenting university history that had entered the public domain. This project's goals are to provide people with high quality digital content that can be used and shared freely, and to determine if placing digital media in the public domain will direct more traffic back to the source material, which currently resides in our Northeast Texas Digital Collections, thus …

Politics is a term often frowned upon as it pertains to the role of an academic leader. However as chair and now director of a school for 30 years it has become an essential yet sometimes unwanted aspect of the daily rigors of the position. This workshop explores the pros and cons of “playing politics” as a department chair and allows interactivity among participants in “what if” scenarios citing various literature references along the way

Using An Engaged Scholarship Symposium To Change Perceptions: Evaluation Results, Sapna Varkey, Olga Smirnova, Tara Lee Gallien

Journal of Extension

Engaged scholarship (ES) entails a symbiotic relationship between the community and the university. This article reports results from an evaluation of an ES symposium Eastern Carolina University held to increase awareness of ES as a means for integrating research, teaching, and service and to potentially change unfavorable perceptions about ES through education and testimonials. After the symposium, participants were more likely to suggest that the university should put more weight on ES. On the basis of our findings, we believe that a symposium designed to encourage open dialogue among faculty, administrators, and Extension professionals can lead to increased awareness of …

Mlearning Device Usage And Self Efficacy By Higher Education Faculty For Professional Activities: A Case Study, Elbert Davis

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study examined the level of use and the level of self-efficacy use of mLearning devices for faculty at one university. The study also examined the relationship between use and self-efficacy levels, and the challenges faced by faculty members concerning the use of mLearning devices for professional activities. A mixed-methods model was used to complete the study. A 17-item self-report survey was developed by the researcher to determine the frequency of use, and the self-efficacy level of faculty concerning professional activities. An interview protocol was used to collect additional information from selected respondents. Findings indicated statistically significant differences in mean …

Development Of An Instrument To Measure Faculty's Information And Communication Technology Access (Ficta), Kamal Ahmed Soomro, Ugur Kale, Reagan Curtis, Mete Akcaoglu, Malayna Bernstein

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

The phenomenon of “digital divide” is complex and multidimensional, extending beyond issues of physical access. The purpose of this study was to develop a scale to measure a range of factors related to digital divide among higher education faculty and to evaluate its reliability and validity. Faculty’s Information and Communication Technology Access (FICTA) scale was tested and validated with 322 faculty teaching in public and private sector universities. Principal components analysis with varimax rotation confirmed an 8-factor solution corresponding to various dimensions of ICT access. The 57-item FICTA scale demonstrated good psychometric properties and offers researchers a tool to examine …

Dr. Sharareh Kermanshachi, Assistant Professor in UTA's Department of Civil Engineering, received a UTA CARES grant in 2017. The grant supported creation of an OER to replace the commercial textbook previously used in a graduate-level civil engineering course on risk management. The course has an average enrollment of 45 students in each of the fall and spring semesters and 15 in the summer semesters. The grantee-provided cost savings estimate was approximately $11,550 in annual savings. The OER was first used in Civil Engineering 5350 in Fall 2017. Twelve engineering students and 37 management students voluntarily participated in an end-of-semester survey …
