Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The university education system aims to preserve and enhance human knowledge by strengthening the research abilities of students, resulting in the promotion of independent learning. These goals cannot be achieved without the help and intervention of an information specialist, as well as faculty. Knowledgeable navigators (e.g. librarians and lecturers) have to locate and evaluate information before passing it on to their students for use. This study sought to examine the link between information literacy skills (ILS) and library patronage. A questionnaire survey was used to collect data from 120 faculty members at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in …

Leading Hispanic Serving Community Colleges: Latinx Faculty Perceptions About The Aacc Competencies, Sanjuanita Chavira Scott
Leading Hispanic Serving Community Colleges: Latinx Faculty Perceptions About The Aacc Competencies, Sanjuanita Chavira Scott
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Latinx students are likely to enter postsecondary education at a community college. This phenomenon has led to the increase in community colleges being designated as Hispanic Serving Institutions. The designation of Hispanic Serving is not driven by mission, but rather by number of enrolled students who identify as Latinx. This preliminary descriptive study examined the perceptions of faculty at four Hispanic Serving community colleges in Texas regarding their proficiency on leadership competencies for faculty, whether there were differences in the perceptions of Latinx and non-Latinx faculty members, and whether certain leadership competencies influence faculty members’ decisions to pursue leadership opportunities. …

Faculty-Librarian Information Literacy Collaboration, Kimmarie W. Lewis
Faculty-Librarian Information Literacy Collaboration, Kimmarie W. Lewis
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Faculty and librarian collaboration is key in the quest for information literacy. As part of the reaccreditation effort at Lord Fairfax Community College -- a two-year institution in northwestern Virginia -- the QEP Leadership Team sought LFCC Librarians’ assistance in a multifaceted, 5-year, information literacy initiative. This effort included the addition of a librarian to the all-faculty QEP Leadership Team, the redesign of composition courses, and professional development through a new LFCC program: “Seeking the Truth: Faculty-Librarian Collaboration Mini-Grants.”
Data obtained from the mini-grant program show that LFCC faculty engaged in this multifaceted initiative gained an appreciation for collaboration with …

An Autoethnographic Study Of Online Class Size And Instructor Participation In Discussions, Danielle M. Philipson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research provided a detailed description of the researcher’s experience as an online instructor who faced increasing demands while trying to maintain instructional effectiveness. This account provided online program directors who sought to balance instructor satisfaction, accreditation standards, and financial pressures with insight into the impact of class size choices on instructor behavior in the online classroom. A qualitative autoethnographic method was used to understand the nature of the connection between class size and instructor use of instructional posts and to identify factors that influence the way instructors participate in online discussions. “Natural” Sunscreens Although More Expensive Are Not More Effective At Preventing Uv Exposure, Tara Lunsford, Alanna L. Lecher, Cassandra S. Korte
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Skin cancer, the most common type of cancer within humans, has approximately 3.5 million cases each year. The evidence supports that the use of sunscreen can help to prevent different forms of skin cancers. There are a multitude of brands that make sunscreen, each claiming to be better than the next. The two main types of sunscreen are physical and chemical. Physical sunscreens deflect the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun and are normally made of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, whereas chemical sunscreen absorb the suns UV rays and can be composed of many different ingredients. It was hypothesized …
The Effect Of Optional Retrieval Practice On Long Term Retention, Harrison Albert, Melissa Lehman
The Effect Of Optional Retrieval Practice On Long Term Retention, Harrison Albert, Melissa Lehman
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Retrieval practice is a well-researched cognitive strategy for improving memory for target information. A substantial amount of empirical research from several decades shows that retrieval practice has a positive effect on long-term retention of information. The current study aims to assess the effects of review activities using retrieval practice on long-term retention of course materials, and to examine their effect on test anxiety. Although some research has examined the impact of retrieval practice in course settings, there have been few controlled experiments and little research looking at the impacts on test anxiety. A multi-session exam review activity will be administered …

Mind-Body Interventions To Reduce Coronavirus Pandemic Stress And Support Long-Term Recovery, Patricia L. Gerbarg, Richard P. Brown
NYMC Faculty Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic is causing global stress, trauma and mental illness that has already outpaced current healthcare resources. Inequalities in the burden of illness, death, and economic loss are exacerbated by inequalities in the provision of mental health care. Minority populations and indigenous peoples bear the brunt of both inequities. Ancient healing systems, such as Yoga, Qigong, and tribal practices, are a rich source of group healing methods that can be studied and optimized for prevention and recovery during current and future disasters. Modern research is shedding light on a myriad of mechanisms that underly the healing properties of voluntarily …

This survey was conducted to analyze the general job satisfaction and compensation trend and create a national benchmarking report for salary and other benefits that faculty members receive in the U.S. Some may say job satisfaction is an elusive, even mythical concept, and an abundance of research has been dedicated towards it. The current report mainly focused on job satisfaction amongst academic staff in the U.S. We were particularly interested in understanding both the general level of satisfaction and different factors that seemed to account for satisfaction and dissatisfaction. In addition, we were interested to see if there was any …

This study examined whether higher education faculty knowingly and/or unknowingly applied UDL principles prior to and during the COVID-19 rapid online teaching and learning (ROTL) transition. Researchers collected data through a survey that was disseminated nationwide and completed by higher education faculty (n = 38). Findings included a shift in instruction modality where 50 percent of synchronous in person instruction moved to asynchronous online instruction or optional synchronous remote instruction. Additionally, there was an unsurprising, considerable increase in the use of technology to support student engagement with course content. Researchers identified themes in the barriers (e.g., time, resources, training) to …

While institutions offering asynchronous courses provide training to help new instructors develop the skills necessary to facilitate learner-centered, asynchronous courses, little is known about how online instructors perceive the training they receive. Knowing more about how online instructors perceive the training they receive to prepare them to facilitate learner-centered, asynchronous courses can inform the improvement/enhancement of new instructor training. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore online instructors’ perceptions of new instructor training at an online university in the Western United States. Mezirow’s transformative learning theory guided this study. Research questions were designed to explore how instructors …
