OBJECTIVE: Academic medicine diversity is important for addressing health disparities and training the next generation. A recent study highlighted the lack of diversity among pediatric trainees over time. However, trends in US pediatric faculty diversity have not been clearly illuminated. The aim of this study is to evaluate pediatric faculty diversity trends and compare racial/ethnic representation between pediatric faculty and the US population.
METHODS: Repeat cross-sectional study of the Association of American Medical Colleges Faculty Roster of pediatric faculty from 2000 to 2020. Trends in sex, race, ethnicity, and rank were compared with the Cochran-Armitage test. Data on faculty race/ethnicity …

The mixture cure rate model is the most commonly used cure rate model in the literature. In the context of mixture cure rate model, the standard approach to model the effect of covariates on the cured or uncured probability is to use a logistic function. This readily implies that the boundary classifying the cured and uncured subjects is linear. In this paper, we propose a new mixture cure rate model based on interval censored data that uses the support vector machine (SVM) to model the effect of covariates on the uncured or the cured probability (i.e., on the incidence part …

Opinions have been divided regarding the relevance of the APA Ethics Code to non-mental health specialties and even whether the code should attempt to encompass all psychology specializations. However, these opinions have crystallized without the benefit of any appreciable empirical data, until now. This study investigates the applicability of the ethical principles and standards of the code to 398 first-person narratives of ethical incidents reported by industrial-organizational (I-O) psychologists. On average, 2.8 (of the 5) principles enumerated in the code were deemed applicable to each incident, and each principle was applicable to more than half the incidents provided. Of the …

Transitional Experiences Of Physical Therapy Clinicians To Physical Therapy Faculty Members: A Phenomenological Study, Jessica Jacobs
All Dissertations
In physical therapy education, there is a shortage of physical therapy faculty members. Considering this shortage, it is essential to understand new faculty’s experiences in order to recruit and retain qualified individuals. New faculty are often recruited directly from clinical practice for their expertise but lack training in teaching and learning. Using Schlossberg’s transition therapy as a framework, the lived experiences of physical therapy faculty members’ transition from clinical practice to academia was explored. The purpose of this study was to 1) explore the work-role transition of new faculty members in physical therapy education programs, 2) identify potential resources faculty …

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This qualitative case study was conducted to understand the experiences of ten faculty participants at a private, not-for-profit, 4-year degree-granting, high research institution located in the Northeast United States, who needed to change from in-person instruction to remote teaching due to COVID-19 during Spring 2020, as they prepared to protect student privacy while teaching online. In addition, this study sought to better understand how faculty were protecting and sharing student data, PII, and other personal information during that time. Data for this study was collected through semi-structured interviews. Narrative methods informed my choice of interviewing because this method provided a …

Thriving in academe for faculty of color is difficult and challenging (Gasman, 2022). Faculty of Color face enormous odds of overcoming barriers such as an unwelcoming culture, isolation, lack of professional support, imposter syndrome and disengagement from the community of scholars. In recognition of these factors, intentional mentoring provides a strategy of support in facilitating successful persistence in the academy.
This autoethnographic paper explores the mentor-mentee relationship of a tenured faculty member whose contributions in mentorship and coaching produced notable professional growth for countless doctoral students and new faculty members. Sharing the experiences of one mentee and mentor may inform …

Occupational Disruptions Among Health Professional Faculty During Covid-19 Pandemic, Supawadee C. Lee, Mahrukh Awan, Uruj Chaudhary, Priyanka John
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
The coronavirus disease was an unexpected pandemic. It led faculty in the health professional graduate programs to adjust and adapt to the new reality, which impacted them mentally, physically, and emotionally, and disrupted their occupational performance. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the impact of COVID-19 on occupational engagement through semi-structured interviews conducted to understand the lived experiences of graduate faculty in health professional programs at one university in the northeast region. The interviews were analyzed by creating codes and themes through the process of peer debriefing. Eight faculty participated in the study, including faculty from the …

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) affects an estimated 18 million individuals in the U.S. adult population. Numerous research findings indicate that OSA has significant adverse effects on the cardiac health. Current method of assessing the severity of OSA using apnea hypopnea index (AHI) which is the average count of apneic events per hour of sleep does not reflect how OSA affects the cardiovascular system health. In this study, we investigate the possibility of analyzing the nocturnal Electrocardiography (ECG) signal to assess the adverse impact of sleep apnea events on the heart. Our approach focuses on determining whether nocturnal cardiac arrhythmia is …

This paper presents a Machine Learning approach using sensor data from a Smart Floor aimed at addressing a substantial health problem among the elderly population, namely falls. Studies show that one-third of community-dwelling people over age 65 will experience one or more falls each year. Balance and walking patterns are useful indicators to determine the fall risk and are influenced by several parameters and conditions. The Tinetti test is widely used to assess the gait and balance in elder adults to determine the perception of balance and stability during daily activities and fear of falling. It is considered a good …

"But I'M Not An Engineer"...Collaboration Between A Librarian And An Upper Division Project-Based Engineering Program, Heidi J. Southworth, Rebecca Bates, Robert Sleezer
Library Services Publications
Since 2013, a librarian at Minnesota State University, Mankato has collaborated with faculty and students in an upper division project-based engineering program. While having several years of experience in university libraries plus advanced degrees in history, the librarian had a limited background in science, engineering, and technology, and lacked a formal engineering degree. At first glance, this match may appear to be a recipe for failure. Indeed, in those first few years, the librarian’s angst about the missing engineering degree caused many sleepless nights of worry and concern. However, there came a time when the words “but I am not …

Measurements of bone artifacts can give insight into the influence of ecological resources on the survival and health of area inhabitants. Calipers are traditionally used for accurate measurements for shell and bone artifacts. Measurement apps may present an accurate alternative to calipers. In this experiment shell and bone artifacts were measured with calipers, the Ruler iPhone App, and the ARuler iPhone app. The results of this experiment show no statistical difference in the measurements taken using a caliper vs measurements taken on an iPhone apps. Though they were not statistically significant, there were differences in measurements between the various methods.

Physician well-being is an important contributor to both job satisfaction and patient outcomes. Rates of burnout among physicians vary by specialty, ranging from 35 to 70%. Among pediatric residents, longitudinal data demonstrates consistent rates of burnout around 50-60%, although little is known about burnout among pediatric subspecialty fellows. Specifically, the degree of burnout among pediatric nephrologists remains unknown, as does the impact faculty burnout may have on trainee burnout. We sought to evaluate prevalence and predictors of burnout among US pediatric nephrology fellows and faculty, and assess for interactions between groups. In this multi-center pilot survey of all United States …

The Decision To Depart: Black Women Faculty's Experience With Departure And The Academy, Herlanda L. Hampton
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research study was to examine how the concept of departure influences the lack of diversity among higher education faculty. More specifically, what factors are currently influencing Black women faculty’s decisions to depart academic positions across two institution types, Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). A phenomenological method of inquiry supported the research and included two research questions. The primary research question asked what influences impacted the decision to depart for each faculty member. A secondary question examined the similarities and differences of these influences for departure decisions from the PWIs and …

Communication Faculty Publications
In recent years Institutions of Higher Education have refocused their instructional methods toward online or remote options. This rearrangement has brought challenges to many universities and colleges, the likes of which have not been seen before. Preparing, encouraging, and converting faculty to online instructors has been one of the core issues. Within Higher Education at major colleges and universities a professor whose primary responsibility is teaching strictly online has not been widely accepted. This paper explores the relatively recent changes in Higher Education, types of instruction, the traditional faculty structure, and calls for the addition of an online faculty rank, …

Pandemic Issues: Faculty Value Alignment And Burnout, Eu Gene Chin, Brooke Hildebrand Clubbs
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Burnout among faculty members impacts physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning and has negative socioeconomic consequences downstream. Prior to the pandemic, faculty members were already reporting high levels of burnout, which is characterized by depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, and a lack of personal accomplishment. Previous research reported that value incongruence functions as one of the strongest predictors of depersonalization (and subsequently) turnover intention. This study provides a snapshot of the value alignment and burnout of faculty at a regional public university in the months following the pandemic-induced pivot to remote learning. Results from our survey of faculty members (N = 58) suggest …

Managing Mental Health Risks On Short-Term Study Abroad Programs: A Faculty Development Approach, Katherine A. Hoffswell
Masters Projects
Over the past several decades, the increase in college students participating in study abroad programming has coincided with the increase in students reporting issues with their mental health. Faculty directors who lead short-term study abroad trips are responsible for creating a safe environment that supports student health, wellbeing, and learning while abroad. However, literature suggests that many faculty directors feel unprepared to address issues with student mental health as they facilitate their programs. This project seeks to improve faculty director competency and confidence regarding mental health risk management abroad through the creation and implementation of a virtual professional development series. …
