Black Students’ Attitudes And Perceptions Of Their Educational Experiences With Implications For Persistence And Goal Completion, Carol A. Ferguson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Southwest Missouri State University is a predominately white institution which historically has admitted and retained very few black students. Because of several special programs instituted by the university president, the number of black students enrolled at SMSU is increasing. The campus has a student population of more than 19,000 with the black students making up 1.5 percent of this number. With more and more concern being directed at student retention the issue that attrition has been a problem with all college students including the black students is now being addressed on campus.

The study was designed to examine the students’ …

The Faculty Of The Sixties: A Reappraisal, Monroe H. Little Jun 1990

The Faculty Of The Sixties: A Reappraisal, Monroe H. Little

Trotter Review

Between 1967 and 1969 the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education initiated and substantially funded several national surveys of U.S. higher education. One such study of faculty employed a questionnaire that was mailed to approximately 100,000 full-time college and university faculty at 303 schools nationwide. The results of this survey, which solicited more than 300 items of information from each respondent and enjoyed an unusually high response rate of over 60%, contain a wealth of data on a variety of political and social issues that has rarely been subjected to careful analysis by scholars.

This is especially unfortunate in retrospect. The …

The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

As the number of high school graduates decreases, Ferris State University (FSU) will increasingly compete with the other fourteen state universities, community colleges, and private schools for high school students. Therefore, in a effort to maintain current enrollment levels, Ferris will need to recruit actively nontraditional students (students aged twenty-five and older).

The recognition of and adaptation to the changes in the Ferris student population are of utmost importance to the university if administrators and faculty are to assess successfully the effects of this population on the institution's academic programs and fiscal health. Prior to this study, no one at …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

During the nineties, increasing attention is being paid to the problem of impairment in nurses. The antecedents to professional impairment were analyzed in this study. Included in the study was exploration of the levels of burnout, depression, co-dependency and alcohol use in sophomore level community college nursing students. These four variables were analyzed in relationship to demographic data regarding the students, specifically, activities related to self-care.

The following hypotheses were tested: (1) there was no significant difference on the mean scores for burnout, depression and co-dependency, (2) there was no significant difference in the mean scores on burnout, depression, co-dependency …
