In 1849 Fort Worth was a military post without a stockade. The wooden buildings are long gone, but the military legacy of Fort Worth has expanded far beyond the military defense of North Texas settlers. The development of pilot training fi elds and a military camp during World War I and the placement of the Army Air Forces Flying Training Command in World War II, in conjunction with the construction of military aircraft beginning in 1940, all contribute to a robust military history. Home to the nation's largest defense contractor and the largest helicopter producer (Lockheed Martin and Bell Helicopter, …

City Of Arlington, Texas, Blackland Prairie Preserve Master Plan, David Hopman, Dfl Group Llc

Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications - Archive

The City of Arlington acquired the Blackland Prairie site in 1998 after a group of concerned citizens identified its value as possibly the last blackland prairie remnant site in the city. Encouraged by the Arlington Conservation Council, the land was purchased by the city to be held as permanent open space. In its current condition, the site remains in transition. Efforts by volunteers have helped maintain native prairie grasses on approximately half of the site. The eastern half however, has remained untouched since acquisition. Invasive grasses, woody and herbaceous plants continue to proliferate in this area, leaving relatively few native …

Literacy For All In 100 Days? A Research Based Strategy For Fast Progress In Low Income Countries, Helen Abadzi Jan 2013

Literacy For All In 100 Days? A Research Based Strategy For Fast Progress In Low Income Countries, Helen Abadzi

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive

In low-income countries many students are marginalized very early and remain illiterate. In grades 1-3 they attend rarely, though they may officially drop out in grade 4. Many others graduate from primary school without having learned letter values. The worrisome outcomes, despite much donor investment in low-income countries, have prompted scrutiny of the methods, and textbooks used to make students literate. This document offers insights from cognitive neuroscience and evidence suggesting that students can be taught basic literacy within the first semester of grade 1, if taught in consistently spelled languages. Teaching students at risk of dropout to read as …

Influence Of Vectors' Risk-Spreading Strategies And Environmental Stochasticity On The Epidemiology And Evolution Of Vector-Borne Diseaes: The Example Of Chagas' Disease, Christopher Kribs, Perrine Pelosse, Marine Ginoux, Jorge E. Rabinovich, Sebastien Gourbiere, Frederic Menu Jan 2013

Rabinovich, Sebastien Gourbiere, Frederic Menu

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

Insects are known to display strategies that spread the risk of encountering unfavorable conditions, thereby decreasing the extinction probability of genetic lineages in unpredictable environments. To what extent these strategies influence the epidemiology and evolution of vector-borne diseases in stochastic environments is largely unknown. In triatomines, the vectors of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas’ disease, juvenile development time varies between individuals and such variation most likely decreases the extinction risk of vector populations in stochastic environments. We developed a simplified multi-stage vector-borne SI epidemiological model to investigate how vector riskspreading strategies and environmental stochasticity influence the …

Nanomaterials For Photo-Based Diagnostic And Therapeutic Applications, Baohong Yuan, Jyothi Unnikrishna Menon, Khanh Vu, Parth V. Jadeja, Kytai Truong Nguyen, Pranjali P. Tambe Jan 2013

Nanomaterials For Photo-Based Diagnostic And Therapeutic Applications, Baohong Yuan, Jyothi Unnikrishna Menon, Khanh Vu, Parth V. Jadeja, Kytai Truong Nguyen, Pranjali P. Tambe

Bioengineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Photo-based diagnosis and treatment methods are gaining prominence due to increased spatial imaging resolution, minimally invasive modalities involved as well as localized treatment. Recently, nanoparticles (NPs) have been developed and used in photo-based therapeutic applications. While some nanomaterials have inherent photo-based imaging capabilities, others including polymeric NPs act as nanocarriers to deliver various fluorescent dyes or photosensitizers for photoimaging and therapeutic applications. These applications can vary from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and optical imaging to photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy. Materials commonly used for development of photo-based NPs ranges from metal-based (gold, silver and silica) to polymer- based (chitosan, dextran, …

A Method For Simulating Burr Type Iii And Type Xii Distributions Through Moments And Correlations, Mohan Pant, Todd C. Headrick Jan 2013

A Method For Simulating Burr Type Iii And Type Xii Distributions Through Moments And Correlations, Mohan Pant, Todd C. Headrick

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive

This paper derives the Burr Type III and Type XII family of distributions in the contexts of univariate ??-moments and the ??- correlations. Included is the development of a procedure for specifying nonnormal distributions with controlled degrees of ??-skew, ??-kurtosis, and ??-correlations. The procedure can be applied in a variety of settings such as statistical modeling (e.g., forestry, fracture roughness, life testing, operational risk, etc.) and Monte Carlo or simulation studies. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate that ??-moment-based Burr distributions are superior to their conventional moment-based analogs in terms of estimation and distribution fitting. Evaluation of the proposed procedure …

Visual And Linguistic Factors In Literacy Acquisition: Instructional Implication For Beginning Readers In Low Income Countries, Helen Abadzi, C Marinelli, M Martelli, P. Praphamontripong, P Zoccolotti

Improving the quality of literacy teaching may require intervening at different levels, for example, encouraging school attendance and optimizing textbook format and teaching methods. Reading is a complex task involving perceptual, motor, linguistic, phonological, and memory components, each of which has a crucial role in determining reading rate. High poverty rates continue to have a negative impact on human resource development and education quality in Africa, further complicating the ability of most countries to reach the Education for All (EFA) and Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Moreover, Africa and Asia are hosts to most of the world's multilingual countries, in which …

Education For All In Low-Income Countries: A Crucial Role For Cognitive Scientists, Helen Abadzi Jan 2013

Education For All In Low-Income Countries: A Crucial Role For Cognitive Scientists, Helen Abadzi

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive

Donor funding has helped enroll in school most children of low-income countries. However, students get little schooling and few opportunities to encode and consolidate information. Many fail to learn and automatize the small units needed for more complex skills, such as reading. As a result, many children remain illiterate and drop out in the early primary grades. However, donors and governments often focus on the socioeconomic difficulties of the very poor and have limited insights on how to teach students who get no academic preparation before grade 1. Furthermore, staff experiences with middle class schools may promote complex instructional methods …
