Interfacing With Robots Without The Use Of Touch Or Speech, Addison Clark, Ahmad Ishfaq Jul 2021

Interfacing With Robots Without The Use Of Touch Or Speech, Addison Clark, Ahmad Ishfaq

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

As the field of robotics develops, so do the methods of interfacing with and controlling those robots. Many modern robots can be communicated with using commands that require neither speech nor touch. The two main motivations behind this trend are the assistance of people with disabilities and the desire for more natural Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). In allowing nonverbal communication with robots, accessibility of the systems increases to allow more people to interact with and benefit from robotics systems. Additionally, nonverbal communication provides more natural communication, which can lead to many benefits in HRI. This paper provides an overview of existing …

Z-Fuzzer: Device-Agnostic Fuzzing Of Zigbee Protocol Implementation, Mengfei Ren, Xiaolei Ren, Huadong Feng, Jiang Ming, Yu Lei

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

With the proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, Zigbee is widely adopted as a resource-efficient wireless protocol. Recently, severe vulnerabilities in Zigbee protocol implementations have compromised IoT devices from different manufacturers. It becomes imperative to perform security testing on Zigbee protocol implementations. However, it is not a trivial task to apply the existing vulnerability detection techniques such as fuzzing to Zigbee protocol implementations. In particular, it remains a significant obstacle to deal with low-level hardware events. Many existing protocol fuzzing tools lack a proper execution environment for the Zigbee protocol, which communicates via a radio channel instead of …

Empowering Pandemic Narratives: Transitioning From In-Person To Virtual Blog Training, Alexandra Pirkle, Krystal Schenk

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

When UTA Libraries launched its new website in January 2020, one of the goals for Marketing and Communications was to provide comprehensive and accessible blog training to Libraries staff. What began as pre-scheduled, in-person training sessions in computer labs quickly transitioned to more fluid, virtual offerings as the COVID-19 pandemic swept the United States and staff began to work from home. This presentation will describe the original development of our blog training, including documentation, branding, and overall curricular structure, and how we translated that to the more nebulous Microsoft Teams-based sessions we continue to offer to staff today. We will …

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are at the forefront of the United States (US) public health agenda due to their tremendous human and financial burden. Further, disproportionately high ADRD rates among racial/ethnic minorities require incorporating the unique perspectives of racially and ethnically diverse scientists, which will necessitate diversifying the scientific workforce that investigates disparities in aging. The purpose of this paper is to describe the training and mentorship initiatives of the National Institute on Aging (NIA)-funded Carolina Center on Alzheimer's Disease and Minority Research, emphasizing lessons learned from our engagement with underrepresented minority and minoritized (URM) Scientists. Student Perceptions Of Academic Librarians And The Librarian-Faculty-Student Dynamic: Minding Our Gaps, Lara Sapp, Jody Fagan, Hillary Ostermiller, Elizabeth Price

Libraries

A survey concerning perceptions of academic librarians was conducted at a large, 4-year university with three populations: librarians, faculty, and undergraduate students. This paper presents results from the student population, with comparison to the librarian and faculty samples. The major research questions address perceptions about what librarians know (expertise and skills), what librarians do (role and duties), and what librarians are like (motivations and affective characteristics). Respondents showed a little more awareness of librarians’ professional duties than in previous studies; however, librarians’ duties related to organization, reference, and teaching remained more hidden from view. And, many students still assume librarians …

Faculty Perceptions Of Dyadic Advising Relationships, Power, And Cultural Consciousness On College Student Learning Outcomes, Hind Albana

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

Academic advising in institutions of higher education lack consistent assessment and evaluation of practices impairing the ability to define the role, objectives, and methods utilized. Over-reliance on student satisfaction surveys for evaluating advising reinforces this phenomenon. To break the cycle, this study used survey responses from a nationwide sample (N = 156) of faculty advisors from public and private 4-year colleges and universities to examine the relationship between and among the constructs of a working relationship, shared power, cultural consciousness, and student learning outcomes. The questionnaire instrument score produced a Cronbach's alpha of .927, illustrating substantially strong internal consistency. …

Increasing Retention In Higher Education Institutions Through Competency-Based Education, Jévaughn J. Lancaster May 2021

Increasing Retention In Higher Education Institutions Through Competency-Based Education, Jévaughn J. Lancaster

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Competency-based education allows students to advance based on their ability to become proficient within a topic at their own pace. Since students can work through various learning outcomes without time constraints, statistics show that competency-based education can provide students with higher results and a greater understanding of the subject matter without the additional stress of turning in assignments late or not understanding course materials in time to obtain a passing score on the assessment.

Higher educational institutions have been struggling with not only enrollment but also retention. Students opt for micro-learning opportunities and on-the-job training rather than obtaining credentials through …

A Capstone In Education: Current Challenges For Occupational Therapist Clinicians Transitioning To Role Of Academician, Jacie Schneider

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

The doctoral capstone I participated in for my entry-level Doctor of Occupational Therapy program was in a focus area of education with a mentor who was a professor in a master’s program. I supported my mentor in her role as a professor of a physical dysfunction intervention course and had the opportunity to present a module to students on wheelchair seating interventions. Using experience gained during my capstone as well as information learned during the review of literature, I created a guide for OTs interested in making the transition into academia to meet the capstone project requirement.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The university education system aims to preserve and enhance human knowledge by strengthening the research abilities of students, resulting in the promotion of independent learning. These goals cannot be achieved without the help and intervention of an information specialist, as well as faculty. Knowledgeable navigators (e.g. librarians and lecturers) have to locate and evaluate information before passing it on to their students for use. This study sought to examine the link between information literacy skills (ILS) and library patronage. A questionnaire survey was used to collect data from 120 faculty members at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in …
