Vaccination Strategies And Backward Bifurcation In Age-Since-Infection Structured Model, Christopher Kribs, Maia Martcheva Jan 2002

Vaccination Strategies And Backward Bifurcation In Age-Since-Infection Structured Model, Christopher Kribs, Maia Martcheva

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

We consider models for a disease with acute and chronic infective stages, and variable infectivity and recovery rates, within the context of a vaccination campaign. Models for SIRS and SIS disease cycles exhibit backward bifurcations under certain conditions, which complicate the criteria for success of the vaccination campaign by making it possible to have stable endemic states when R0 < 1. We also show the extent to which the forms of the infectivity and recovery functions affect the possibility of backward bifurcations. SIR and SI models examined do not exhibit this behavior.

There Is Nothing More Diverse Than "New", Frederick A. Miller, Roger Gans Jan 2002

There Is Nothing More Diverse Than "New", Frederick A. Miller, Roger Gans

Communication Faculty Publications - Archive

In the organizational competition for talent, successful retention of newly recruited workers is at least as important as the initial hire. Still, many organizations fail to establish a sense of inclusion for new people in much the same way they often fail to create a sense of inclusion for people of color, women, people with foreign accents, or anyone with obvious differences from the “traditional group.” In most organizations, even those that have embarked on “diversity initiatives,” newly hired people often do not feel welcomed. Consequently, turnover rates in the first two years of employment are seven times greater than …

The conflict between the president of the college wanting students to study abroad and the loss of revenue when students leave to study abroad was serious and problematic. The purpose of the project was to provide …

Assessing Faculty Perspectives On Implementing The Boyer Model, Delilah Anne Schwaner Jan 2002

Assessing Faculty Perspectives On Implementing The Boyer Model, Delilah Anne Schwaner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Boyer model is a well-recognized format chosen by many universities as a guide for leave, rank and tenure criteria, and for rewarding activities by faculty. Given a past, brief association with this model by faculty and administration at Southern Utah University, and the continuing need for a comprehensive review of scholarly effort in the institution, this study was undertaken to gauge the level of understanding of Boyer's model and his four scholarships, satisfaction with present policies, and attitudes toward change. The aim was to explore the use of a questionnaire as an instrument to measure knowledge and attitudes, to …

Community College Faculty Attitudes On Professional Development Attendance And Incentives, Patricia T Laflamme

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The full-time teaching faculty of the Community College of Southern Nevada responded to a survey designed to gather their views on internal professional development activities coordinated by the Faculty Center for Learning & Teaching (FCLT). The survey items elicited what types of activities or attitudes interfered with faculty attendance at such activities and what potential incentives or rewards were attractive to them in return for their participation in the activities; Significant findings for reasons that faculty do not participate in professional development primarily revolved around the faculty demographic characteristics of gender or teaching area (vocational or academic). This was true …

Comparison Of The Quality Of Curriculum Written By Faculty Who Have Participated In Training To Curriculum Written By Faculty Who Have Not Participated In Training, Sue Salter

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem for this study was that it was unknown whether faculty participation in an IPD curriculum-writing workshop resulted in higher IPD curriculum module overall quality assessment scores (OQAS) when compared to the OQAS scores of modules written by faculty who did not participate in the curriculum-writing workshop.

There was one research question for this study: Will there be a significant difference in the mean IPD curriculum module OQAS scores of modules written by faculty who have participated in an IPD curriculum-writing workshop and by faculty who have not participated in an IPD curriculum-writing workshop?

Effect Of Applied Academics On The Final English Course Grade Of Associate Of Science Degree Students In Automotive Service Management Technology, Kathleen Habel Jan 2002

Effect Of Applied Academics On The Final English Course Grade Of Associate Of Science Degree Students In Automotive Service Management Technology, Kathleen Habel

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Traditionally, students enrolled in two-year Automotive Service Management Technology degree programs, had a difficult time succeeding in required general education courses, especially math, English composition, and physics. They enrolled in classes open to the general student population but found that the material had little meaning or relevance to their chosen field of study. According to college records, the pass rate was less than the norm for liberal arts students. Because of this, faculty and staff decided that class material needed to be presented through applied academics. The new curriculum demonstrated the relevance of subject matter in general education classes to …

Development Of A Strategic Plan Based On The Evaluation Of Relevant Quality Measures For Joliet Junior College, Mary Lou D'Allegro Jan 2002

Development Of A Strategic Plan Based On The Evaluation Of Relevant Quality Measures For Joliet Junior College, Mary Lou D'Allegro

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The strategic planning process at Joliet Junior College had been dormant since 2000. The problem, therefore, was that no strategic planning was being conducted that adhered to the institution's accreditation mandates or addressed stakeholder expectations. The purpose of this dissertation was threefold. First, a systematic methodology to develop key performance indicators by soliciting the input of various stakeholder groups was generated. Second, an inventory of those key measures was developed via the input of a formative committee and validation by a summative committee. A pilot study was then conducted to further corroborate lucidity of those quality measures. The final inventory …
