BACKGROUND: Thers is limited research examining modifiable cardiometabolic risk factors with a single-item health behavior question obtained during a clinic visit. Such information could support clinicians in identifying patients at risk for adverse cardiometabolic health. We investigated if children meeting physical activity or screen time recommendations, collected during clinic visits, have better cardiometabolic health than children not meeting recommendations. We hypothesized that children meeting either recommendation would have fewer cardiometabolic risk factors.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: This cross-sectional study used data from electronic medical records (EMRs) between January 1, 2013 through December 30, 2017 from children (2-18 years) with a well …
Healthy Living After Cancer: A Community-Based Program To Improve Exercise And Nutrition In Cancer Survivors, Czarina Banzon
Healthy Living After Cancer: A Community-Based Program To Improve Exercise And Nutrition In Cancer Survivors, Czarina Banzon
OT Student Capstones
Persevering through cancer treatment is an uphill battle, but continuing survivorship for the rest of their lives becomes the biggest challenge for cancer survivors. Concerns in survivorship include side effects from cancer treatment, fear of recurrence, and returning to previous roles and routines. Additionally, survivors must maintain their health and well-being through exercise and nutrition. Occupational therapists possess the necessary skill set to create programming for cancer survivors that is relevant and realistic. They can take side effects from treatment into consideration and offer personalization of goals and maintenance strategies. Furthermore, occupational therapists can offer simple alternatives to maintaining a …

Position statement
The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) provides an objective and critical review of the use of a ketogenic diet in healthy exercising adults, with a focus on exercise performance and body composition. However, this review does not address the use of exogenous ketone supplements. The following points summarize the position of the ISSN:
1. A ketogenic diet induces a state of nutritional ketosis, which is generally defined as serum ketone levels above 0.5 mM. While many factors can impact what amount of daily carbohydrate intake will result in these levels, a broad guideline is a daily dietary …

Low-load resistance exercise (LLRE) to failure can increase muscle mass, strength, endurance, and mitochondrial oxidative capacity (OXPHOS). However, the impact of adding blood flow restriction to low-load resistance exercise (LLBFR) when matched for volume on these outcomes is incompletely understood. This pilot study examined the impact of 6 weeks of single-legged LLBFR and volume-matched LLRE on thigh bone-free lean mass, strength, endurance, and mitochondrial OXPHOS. Twenty (12 males and 8 females) untrained young adults (mean ± SD; 21 ± 2 years, 168 ± 11 cm, 68 ± 12 kg) completed 6 weeks of either single-legged LLBFR or volume-matched LLRE. Participants …
Does Breaking Up Moderate Intensity Continuous Exercise Into Accumulated Bouts Improve Postprandial Metabolic Outcomes In Middle Aged And Older Adults?, Miranda Janis
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Due to the high incidence of CVD in older adults, low levels of habitual physical activity, and poor dietary habits, it is imperative to determine an effective minimal dose of exercise that is attainable to mitigate adverse postprandial (post-meal) responses. This study is the first to our knowledge to assess whether accumulated exercise to expend 25% of the calories consumed in a high-fat meal (HFM) of moderate intensity walking will lower postprandial triglycerides (TRG), glucose (GLU) and metabolic load index (MLI: summation of GLU and TRG), compared to continuous exercise, in middle-aged and older adults (OA). Methods: Ten OA (n=10, …

The Impact Of One Night Of Sleep Restriction On Perception Of Subsequent Aerobic Exercise Performance, Erin G. Meier
The Impact Of One Night Of Sleep Restriction On Perception Of Subsequent Aerobic Exercise Performance, Erin G. Meier
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
Introduction: Previous research has established that poor sleep quality negatively impacts aerobic exercise performance. A majority of that research has examined extreme sleep disruption like complete sleep deprivation or multiple nights of reduced sleep. Little research exists examining the effect of a singular night of sleep restriction (SR) on performance, and there is even less research on the associated perceptual feelings and outcomes from SR that may influence performance. Previous research from our laboratory has suggested that a single night of SR may impair performance, but did not account for sleep inertia or examine any perceptual factors. Therefore, the …

The Association Between Aerobic Exercise And Changes In Hdl Quality Induced By Egg Consumption – A Post-Hoc Analysis Of A Randomized, Controlled, Crossover Dietary Intervention Study, Rachael Woodruff, Catherine J. Andersen
Honors Scholar Theses
Abstract
Objective: Daily intake of whole eggs and aerobic exercise have independently been shown to increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and measures of HDL function, suggesting cardioprotective effects of these lifestyle interventions. However, it is unknown whether exercise volume can synergistically or differentially impact diet responses and egg effects on HDL. Therefore, we evaluated whether exercise volume was associated with distinct effects of consuming different egg-based diets on measures of HDL size, function, and composition.
Methods: Twenty-six healthy men and women completed a 16-week randomized, controlled, crossover intervention study which aimed to investigate the effects of egg-free, egg-white, and whole-egg …

Protein supplementation often refers to increasing the intake of this particular macronutrient through dietary supplements in the form of powders, ready-to-drink shakes, and bars. The primary purpose of protein supplementation is to augment dietary protein intake, aiding individuals in meeting their protein requirements, especially when it may be challenging to do so through regular food (i.e. chicken, beef, fish, pork, etc.) sources alone. A large body of evidence shows that protein has an important role in exercising and sedentary individuals. A PubMed search of “protein and exercise performance” reveals thousands of publications. Despite the considerable volume of evidence, it is …

INTRODUCTION
• Exercise is a critical aspect of healthy living due in part to its effects of muscle adaptation, which are largely regulated by alterations in gene expression
• Sedentary behavior can be required by diverse life circumstances, suggesting a need to reproduce the beneficial effects of exercise by an alternative means
• Like exercise, percussive massage introduces a mechanical strain on the muscle, which could potentially replicate a similar remodeling response of the extracellular matrix (ECM). However, this has not yet been studied
• Collagen 1,3,&4 are major components of the ECM that adapt in response to exercise, and …
