An integrated curriculum is an instructional approach that connects the disciplines to an underlying theme or topic. Immersing students in an integrated-thematic unit provides the backdrop for experiences to occur across the disciplines. Shaping coursework around integrated themes is especially appropriate for gifted students, however using an integrated-thematic curriculum is appropriate for all learners as it develops students' abilities to make connections, to solve problems by looking at multiple perspectives, and to integrate information from different fields of experience. Comparison Between Two Analytical Methods For Fecal Coliform Analysis In Natural Water: Membrane Filtration And Multiple Tube Fermentation, Mona M. Hafez

This study compares two different analytical methods for the determination of coliform bacteria within natural waters. The two methods are: 1) membrane Filtration, and 2) multiple tube fermentation. Water samples from ten different locations within the Appomattox River watershed were collected by technicians from the Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District and the Piedmont Region TMDL Initiative in Farmville, Virginia.

The Membrane filtration (MF) method utilizes m-FC broth to isolate and differentiate total fecal coliform bacteria (E.coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas) in natural water samples. A 1% dilution of each water sample is filtered through a 0.45 micron (um) Millipore filter …

The purpose of this study was to develop a more efficient method to test for phenol in both wastewater and non-wastewater. Phenol is a caustic and toxic contaminant that may be present in our water supplies. Phenol is used in various resins, pharmaceuticals, plastics and disinfectants. Environmental Protection Agency methods are available to test for phenol using gas chromatography along with mass spectrometry or flame ionization detection. Each of these methods can be a long, involved process consisting of extraction, many sample injections, and interference problems. Experience shows that many data processing problems are difficult to solve, and some of these problems have even been proven to be computationally intractable. Human experts successfully solve many such problems by using a hierarchical, multi-resolution approach. These multi-resolution methods are, in several cases, provably optimal. However, due to the computational intractability of the problem itself, the multi-resolution approach can only work if the systems that we are analyzing are themselves hierarchical. We show that, first, due to (inevitable) measurement inaccuracies, an arbitrary input data is consistent with the hierarchical model, and second, that in many cases, the actual physical …

The Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER)-which was established in 1961-has studied that change, examining virtually all the major public policy issues along the way. All of the concepts that I worked with relate in different ways to finding out if the habitat I am looking at can sustain itself on its own without the help from humans. This paper is a comparative study of the public policy processes in Japan, the Peoples Republic of China, and the Republic of China (Taiwan), specifically addressing air pollution policies. What types of air pollution each country faces, and at what levels, will be addressed in the context of public policy formulated to deal with these problems. This is primarily a comparison of how, and why, the policies are formulated as they are. Stakman and Levine have shown that Puccinia graminis tritici (Pers.) Erikss. and Henn. consists of a number of biologic forms, which can be determined by their action on different varieties of Triticum species. To date 37 such biologic forms have been identified by them through the parasitic action on 12 differential hosts chosen from a large number of varieties of Triticum species. To determine whether these biologic forms remain constant in their behavior under various environmental conditions, a detailed study of the host-parasite relation was undertaken with 2 of these forms.
