Engaging With Motherhood: Gender And Sexuality In Environmental Justice, Hannah M G Snyder May 2012

Engaging With Motherhood: Gender And Sexuality In Environmental Justice, Hannah M G Snyder

Pomona Senior Theses

Despite the fact that women make up a large proportion of participants in the environmental justice movement, the movement is still framed in terms of race and class. This thesis investigates the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, class, and environmental justice. I explore the prominent rolls that women play in grassroots environmental justice movements and the look at the discourses that surround gender and environmental justice through a queer studies and ecofeminist lens. I argue that motherhood narratives—while powerful motivators for activists and effective tools for creating resistance—can create a rhetoric that is exclusionary to people with non-normative sexualities and …

Growing Greens And Soiled Soil: Trends In Heavy Metal Contamination In Vegetable Gardens Of San Francisco, Jennifer Gorospe Jan 2012

Growing Greens And Soiled Soil: Trends In Heavy Metal Contamination In Vegetable Gardens Of San Francisco, Jennifer Gorospe

Master's Theses

As urban dwellers prioritize eating locally grown foods to reduce environmental impacts, benefit the local economy, and bring fresh produce to the table, urban gardening has emerged as a popular approach to improving food security. Researchers have shown previously that urban landscapes can accumulate environmental toxins at levels that may be unsafe for human health, with socioeconomically disadvantaged communities often shouldering an unequal burden of exposure. In order to identify and predict likely risk to gardeners, in this study, soil samples from 91 vegetable gardens in the city of San Francisco were analyzed for 16 heavy metals. A majority of …

Recreation Patterns And Decision Drivers For Hispanics/Latinos In Cache Valley, Utah, Jodie J. Madsen Aug 2011

Recreation Patterns And Decision Drivers For Hispanics/Latinos In Cache Valley, Utah, Jodie J. Madsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As the Hispanic/Latino population grows in the United States, increased attention is being given to how and why Hispanic/Latino recreation differs from Anglo recreation. Concerns over equal access to natural resources and recreation have led researchers to question the causes for the differences in recreation choices. The discussion has largely focused on the restrictive effects of ethnicity and the marginal position of minorities in society creating recreation patterns in which minorities are practically nonexistent in wildland recreation areas. Stepping away from the negative valuation about dissimilarities in Hispanic/Latino versus Anglo recreation, this study of Hispanics/Latinos in Cache Valley, Utah focuses …

The Shape Of Grief: A Generational Legacy Of The Vietnam War, Benjamin A. Quick May 2011

The Shape Of Grief: A Generational Legacy Of The Vietnam War, Benjamin A. Quick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A well-known memoirist once said that a true war story never seems to end, that it just keeps going and going. The question begs: If the war story never ends, then how does it manifest in future generations? In my case, as the first-born son of a Vietnam veteran, the war story has played out physically, within my body, in the form of an Agent Orange-related disability and a resulting set of limitations and adaptations. Fortunately, for me the limitations have been few and the adaptations many. But despite this, I’ve known, since a relatively young age, that I am …

Toxic Entanglements Florida's Farmworkers And The Fight For Environmental Justice, Samuel Chillaron Jan 2011

Toxic Entanglements Florida's Farmworkers And The Fight For Environmental Justice, Samuel Chillaron

Theses & ETDs

Environmental Justice is the pursuit of equitable treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, ethnicity, gender and income in questions of environmental regulation, management and public health. This thesis explores the environmental justice issue of pesticide exposure amongst Floridas farmworkers, with an ethnographic and historical focus on the activism of the Farmworker Association of Florida and the former farmworker community of Lake Apopkas muck farms. From the early 1940s to the late 1990s, not only did Lake Apopkas farmworkers endure low wages, substandard living conditions, and exposure to a variety of hazardous pesticides, but were also excluded …

Getting Around When You’Re Just Getting By: The Travel Behavior And Transportation Expenditures Of Low-Income Adults, Mti Report 10-02, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Evelyn A. Blumenberg, Sarah Abel, Gregory Pierce, Charles N. Darrah

Mineta Transportation Institute

How much do people with limited resources pay for cars, public transit, and other means of travel? How does their transportation behavior change during periods of falling employment and rising fuel prices? This research uses in-depth interviews with 73 adults to examine how rising transportation costs impact low-income families. The interviews examine four general areas of interest: travel behavior and transportation spending patterns; the costs and benefits of alternative modes of travel; cost management strategies; and opinions about the effect of changing transportation prices on travel behavior. Key findings include: Most low-income household are concerned about their transportation costs. Low-income …

Essays On Environmental Regulations And Performance Of Firms, Shrawantee Saha Jan 2010

Essays On Environmental Regulations And Performance Of Firms, Shrawantee Saha

Doctoral Dissertations

There has been a surge in the development of new, non-traditional and innovative approaches to address environmental problems in the last three decades of U.S. environmental policies. These new approaches affect polluting behavior via instruments other than taxes, permits or direct imperatives. They rely heavily on active engagement, collaboration and information sharing among firms and industry peers. This dissertation adds to our current understanding of these newer approaches by studying how external pressures and internal awareness affect a firm's polluting behavior. Two essays focus solely on the role of the print media, an external pressure to firms, under the U.S. …

Dammed And The Damned: Draining The Bucket Dry, Carla Steiger

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates how people displaced from the construction of large dams in seek environmental justice. I studied the importance of regime type, the creation of protest groups and the formation of alliances with national, international organizations, and the media. In a comparison between protest movements against the Three Gorges Dam in China and the Sardar Sarovar Dam in India, displaced populations suffered from loss of community, livelihood, and health and were victimized by corrupt actors that supported the dams. The rapid economic development of these two countries emerged as a major point of comparison between the two. Regime type …

Environmental Justice And Title Vi: Making Recipient Agencies Justify Their Siting Decisions, Bradford Mank Jan 1999

Environmental Justice And Title Vi: Making Recipient Agencies Justify Their Siting Decisions, Bradford Mank

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

Title VI prohibits federal agencies from providing funds to state or local agencies that discriminate. Environmental justice advocates have filed over fifty Title VI complaints with the EPA alleging that state or local environmental agencies have granted permits that will cause disparate impacts against minority groups. In February 1998, the EPA promulgated an Interim Guidance on Title VI to help the agency resolve these complaints. A wide range of state and local officials has criticized the Guidance because its vague definition of "disparate impact" may give the EPA too much discretion to find discrimination. This Article demonstrates, however, that the …

Environmental Justice And Discriminatory Siting: Risk-Based Representation And Equitable Compensation, Bradford Mank Jan 1995

Environmental Justice And Discriminatory Siting: Risk-Based Representation And Equitable Compensation, Bradford Mank

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

This Article proposes a new risk-based approach to representing and compensating not only minorities but any person affected by a siting decision. This proposal would create a formal mechanism for achieving the desire of many environmental justice advocates to empower those local residents most affected by a siting decision. The EPA or state siting agencies, however, would provide a technocratic framework for assessing the scope of risks, despite the limitations of risk and cost-benefit analysis; would set limits on the maximum amount of risk in any community; and would specify the minimum compensation required from a developer. Immediate neighbors, political …

A Curious Document Recently Discovered In The Archives, Peter Tillers

Cardozo Law Review

The document reproduced below, which appears to be a letter written by Peter Pilgrim to "Lash, " was recently discovered in the archives of the library of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. Peter Pilgrim is the late Doctor of Facts at Cardozo. "Lash" is probably L.H. LaRue, Story Professor of Law at Washli University. Professor LaRue is also known as the Delphic Oracle of Lex, possibly because no one knows for sure what the letters "L.H." represent. The annotations to the text of the putative letter appear to be a mixture of notes by its author and comments …
