The Organization Of Shrub-Steppe Spider Assemblages: A Hierarchical Evaluation Of Deterministic And Stochastic Influences, William James Ehmann May 1994

The Organization Of Shrub-Steppe Spider Assemblages: A Hierarchical Evaluation Of Deterministic And Stochastic Influences, William James Ehmann

Biology

This dissertation addresses deterministic and stochastic factors that are expected to influence the co-occurrence of spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) in a shrub-steppe environment. First, a field test assessed the role of substrate diameter in spider habitat selection using artificial habitat modules. Second, the effect of alternative spider dispersal modes (passive, long-distance, aerial transport versus active, local ground transport) on assemblage patterns on sagebrush (Artemisia) shrubs was evaluated using an exclosure design. Spider counts from exclosure and reference shrubs were compared at two spatial scales (shrub and plot) and among three potential levels of spider assemblage organization (individuals, species, and …

Perth's North-West Corridor: A Bibliography, E. E. Mcgowan, J. M. Renner

Research outputs pre 2011

The Joondalup Campus of the Western Australian College of Advanced Education is now well established and growing rapidly in size. In part this growth has resulted in an increasing demand for literature on the Perth North-West Corridor and increasing attention being directed to research on the environment and culture of the area. This bibliography has been prepared to facilitate research and scholarship both on the campus and beyond and to assist citizens of the Northern Corridor interested in learning more about their region...

Selection At The Molecular Level: Competition Between Members Of The Lambdoid Family Of Bacteriophages, Kandy D. Baumgardner May 1973

Selection At The Molecular Level: Competition Between Members Of The Lambdoid Family Of Bacteriophages, Kandy D. Baumgardner

Biology

Competition between lambda and 434 hy mi and lambda and phi80 was investigated, making use of long-term transfer experiments to follow evolutionary trends of the phage populations. The competitive superiority of lambda at 37 C is shown by the elimination of 434 hy mi and phi80 from mixed populations. A reversal in the outcome of competition between lambda and phi80 was observed when the phages were grown at low temperature. The temporal course and final outcome of competition appear to be genetically determined responses of the phages to their specific environment. No relation between phage yield per cell and advantage …

Some Effects Of The Under Snow Environment On Growth And Carbohydrate Content Of Claytonia Lanceolata Pursh, Bryce D. Bennett May 1971

Some Effects Of The Under Snow Environment On Growth And Carbohydrate Content Of Claytonia Lanceolata Pursh, Bryce D. Bennett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Studies were conducted in a mountain habitat to determine the effects of altered light and temperature upon the natural growth and/or carbohydrate cycles of Claytonia lanceolata during the period of winter snow cover. Treatments included natural control, light exclusion, and temperature alteration by insulation and by heating for a brief period. Monthly measurements were made of soil temperature (upper 12 cm), shoot development, soluble sugar, and soluble starch. The quantity and quality of light penetrating the snow cover was also determined.

About 0.0052% of the available visible light (400-750 nm) penetrated 70 cm of snow and 0.02% penetrated 50 cm …
