Language Proficiency And Moves In Turkish And English Research Abstracts, Engin Evrim Önem
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The primary function of the abstract within a research article is to convince readers of the study's significance, encapsulating specific details such as its purpose, methodology, results, and discussions and/or conclusions. Notably, scholarly attention has been directed towards the rhetorical structures employed in abstracts found in scientific journals, as authors are believed to employ diverse structures to present their articles in an engaging manner that captures readers' interest. The varied rhetorical structures used in research article abstracts are often referred to as ``moves''. This study investigated the impact of language proficiency and translation on these moves. Six Ph.D. students from …

Evidence Brief: Shifting Attitudes And Social Norms On Fgm Through Community-Based Interventions In Somaliland, Stella Muthuri, Dennis Matanda, Francis Obare, Stephen Kizito, Chi-Chi Undie
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
This study, conducted in Sool and Sanaag regions of Somaliland within the context of The Girl Generation Support to the Africa-Led Movement (TGG-ALM), provides insights into how community-based, dialogue-driven interventions influence attitudes, social norms, and behavioural intentions related to FGM and gender.
Findings show that while personal opposition to FGM is relatively high, this does not consistently translate into perceived or collective opposition. Individuals tend to view their own attitudes as more progressive than those of their families and communities, pointing to a critical “norms misalignment” that constrains behaviour change. This gap suggests that entrenched social expectations – particularly around …

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
The Girl Generation: Support to the Africa-Led Movement (TGG-ALM) programme in Kenya demonstrates that community-based, dialogue-driven interventions can shift social norms, attitudes, and behavioural intentions related to female genital mutilation (FGM), while also strengthening gender-equitable beliefs. Drawing on evidence from Isiolo and Narok counties, this evaluation shows that exposure to intergenerational dialogues, women’s reflection circles, and couple-based engagement is associated with stronger personal opposition to FGM, increased acceptance of uncut girls, and greater willingness to abandon the practice.

Humanitarian Task Force
Humanitarian crises expose women and girls to heightened risk of unintended pregnancy due to increased risk of sexual violence as well as disruption in access to and provision of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services. Unintended pregnancies in turn result in unplanned births and, in contexts with restrictive abortion laws, maternal morbidity and mortality due to unsafe abortion or miscarriage. This makes innovative, evidence-informed solutions to address unintended pregnancy that take into account the unique circumstances of women and girls in humanitarian settings critical. Evidence-informed solutions should consider how best to reach women and girls with SRHR services …

Humanitarian Task Force
Sexual violence against children (SVAC) is an acknowledged concern in humanitarian contexts. In response to recent findings on the prevalence of SVAC in refugee camps in Ethiopia, coupled with low levels of disclosure and service-seeking by child/adolescent survivors, the Baobab Research Programme Consortium collaborated with humanitarian stakeholders in Ethiopia to establish mechanisms for promoting sexual violence disclosure and service uptake among young survivors in refugee settings.
This study employed a mixed-methods concurrent triangulation study design (involving a combination of service statistics, group interviews, and fieldnotes) for evaluating the feasibility of the aforementioned intervention, which specifically entailed sexual violence screening (of …

Evaluation Of Community-Based Interventions Addressing Social Attitudes And Behavioural Intentions Related To Female Genital Mutilation In Somaliland, Francis Obare, Dennis Matanda, Stephen Kizito, Chi-Chi Undie
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
This study aimed to assess changes in social attitudes/beliefs and behavioural intentions related to FGM and gender as a result of community-directed interventions to accelerate positive changes in social attitudes towards ending the practice. The study was conducted in the context of The Girl Generation support to – Africa-Led Movement (TGG-ALM) programme implementation in Somaliland using public opinion poll and vignettes. Key intervention activities implemented by TGG-ALM included conducting community intergenerational dialogues and small grants for community-based organizations to implement interventions at the community level.

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
The Girl Generation: Support to the Africa-Led Movement (TGG-ALM) programme works to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by shifting social attitudes/beliefs and behavioral intentions related to FGM and the gender ideologies that sustain its continued practice through interventions implemented at the community level. This study aimed to assess such shifts in the context of TGG-ALM intervention sites in Kenya, while also tracking the diffusion of the intervention beyond intervention sites. Key intervention activities implemented by TGG-ALM included conducting community intergenerational dialogues in both Isiolo and Narok counties, women-only reflect circles in Isiolo and couples-only/homestead dialogues in Narok.

Hiding In Plain Sight: Trafficking Persons With Disabilities For Begging In Ethiopia, Annabel Erulkar, Galan Bekuma, Lemi Negeri, Getachew Teshome Eregata, Musie Tilahun, Getu Asnake, Getahun Semeon, Weyneshet Gezahegn
Humanitarian Task Force
Adults and children with disabilities are at increased risk of human trafficking for begging because of extreme poverty and high rates of illiteracy; cultural norms and stigma leading to low status; lack of social and legal protection; and their reliance on others for sustenance and help with movement, especially in cities which are fraught with risks. Despite this, trafficking of persons with disabilities for begging has received very little attention from researchers, human rights groups or disability advocates. This report presents findings from among the first studies to focus on trafficking of persons with disabilities for begging.

Strengthening The Use Of Sexual And Reproductive Health And Rights Evidence In Refugee And Humanitarian Settings, Baobab Research Programme Consortium
Humanitarian Task Force
This guide offers practical, experience-based direction for strengthening the uptake of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) evidence in refugee and humanitarian settings. Drawing on five years of Baobab’s work in Uganda and Ethiopia, it outlines principles for effective research uptake, including embedded partnerships, rigorous locally owned methods, stakeholder engagement, capacity development, adaptive communication, and continuous learning. The guide illustrates how these approaches enabled pioneering evidence generation—such as the first Humanitarian Violence Against Children Survey (VACS)—and informed service innovations, national policy reforms, and cross-country learning. It provides a replicable framework for translating SRHR research into action and system level …

Living Photograph Project In Queens, Hillary Miller
Open Educational Resources
I am developing a module for ENGL 371: Twentieth- and Twenty-first Century Drama and Performance. In this course for majors, I have the latitude to choose different topics in my syllabus design. One of the versions I previously developed was organized around “Visions of Home.” In that first attempt I did not successfully connect the material to Queens at any point; in part because none of the plays I selected were based in Queens, I had not figured out how to implement a place-based mode of inquiry of the kind that this workshop explored. The class is organized chronologically (1950s-2000s) …

Changing Lives, Transforming Communities: How Young Feminist Organizations Create Change In Mexico And Kenya, Population Council Kenya
Adolescents and Young People
The Young Feminist Organizing (YFO) study was initiated in response to a call for proposals by two anonymous funders to conduct a Participatory Action Research evaluation (PARe) of young feminist movements across Kenya and Mexico. The project was implemented by the Population Council in Kenya and Mexico, with technical support from the GIRL Center, and through a Feminist Advisory Panel (FAP) and a Core Participatory Evaluation Community (Core PARe). The study's duration was 31 months, starting from September 2022 to March 2025. This end-of-project report summarizes the key findings, lessons learned, challenges encountered, mitigation strategies employed, and emerging opportunities.

Emotional Metaphors In Mandarin And English: Fear And Surprise, Jing Yang
Linguistics ETDs
This paper explores the relationship between emotion and experience from a cognitive perspective to fulfill two purposes. First, it seeks to identify the commonalities and differences in emotional metaphors across vastly different languages and the reasons behind these variations. Second, it aims to contribute to typological research in emotion studies beyond established areas such as color, time, and space using innovative approaches. Specifically, this study focuses on fear and surprise to categorize their source domains using lexical and corpus-based methods. Examples were collected from constructions and the corpus, and patterns of FEAR and SURPRISE metaphors in Mandarin were compared with …
Passive Verb Morphology In Arabic And Faifi Dialect, Essa Salman Alfaifi Dr.
Passive Verb Morphology In Arabic And Faifi Dialect, Essa Salman Alfaifi Dr.
Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
The formation of passive verbs in Arabic is uniquely challenging due to its complex structure and dialectal variations. While Classical Arabic (CA) and Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) adhere to non-concatenative rules of internal vowel modification of the active stem, some dialects use different strategies such as affixation or reflexive pronouns with no modification to the stem. However, despite previous studies on Arabic verbs, the passive verb construction remains insufficiently explored. This paper aims to participate in addressing this gap by detailing the passive verb morphology in the Faifi dialect (FD) and comparing it with CA/MSA. The properties of passive verbs …
Exposing Lived Experiences: Eudora Welty's Intersectional Approach To Writing And Photography, Caroline Mccutchen
Exposing Lived Experiences: Eudora Welty's Intersectional Approach To Writing And Photography, Caroline Mccutchen
Honors Theses
This thesis examines how Eudora Welty employs an intersectional approach in her writing and photography to represent the complex identities of elderly Black women in the American South during the Great Depression. Using intersectionality as a framework, this project analyzes how Welty’s work acknowledges the overlapping forces of race, gender, age, and class that shape her subjects’ lived experiences. While documenting adversity, Welty also highlights resilience, agency, and communal empowerment. The study focuses on Welty’s literary works “A Worn Path,” “Ida M’Toy,” “A Pageant of Birds,” and “Cindy and the Joyful Noise,” alongside her Depression-era photographs from One Time, One …

Limitations Due To Occupational Credentialing For Immigrants In Massachusetts: Survey Report, Phillip Granberry, Florita Coto Tristán, Fabián Torres-Ardila, Jonathan Vega-Martinez, Maria M. Pache De Athayde
Gastón Institute Publications
The Gastón Institute began investigating occupational credentialing because of a previous research project with English for New Bostonians, which had found that many people in its ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes complained that lack of an occupational credential had caused them to suffer unemployment or underemployment. The Latino Equity Fund at the Boston Foundation provided the funding for a study addressing the problem of determining the extent to which Massachusetts immigrants are having trouble in the labor market because they lack the proper occupational credentials. The study has two complementary components: a qualitative study with interviews of …

Translation Research As Reflection On Translation Practice And Product: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Waleed Bleyhesh Al-Amri Dr.
Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
Translation activities in Saudi Arabia have significantly increased due to government initiatives and technological advancements within modernization efforts. This paper analyzes Saudi Arabia’s research carried on translation practices and outcomes using a bibliometric approach on 193 publications by 164 authors across 31 fields. The analysis shows a predominance of classroom-related research, with 61.14% focusing on pedagogy, reflecting local practices and global trends in translation studies as shown by earlier research. Despite the growing interest, critical areas such as audiovisual translation, tourism, and video games translation remain under-researched. The study identifies gaps and suggests future research directions, emphasizing the need for …
Rebranding Ink: Language, Identity, And The Rise Of Tatū In Contemporary Japan, Elise M. Ulrich
Rebranding Ink: Language, Identity, And The Rise Of Tatū In Contemporary Japan, Elise M. Ulrich
Theses and Dissertations
In modern Japan, the shift from the traditional term irezumi (入れ墨) to the English loanword tatū (タトゥー) reflects more than just language change—it reveals deeper cultural and social transformations. Loanwords, or borrowed words from other languages, often enter a language through cultural contact, adapting to fit local linguistic and social norms. As the Linguistic Society of America notes, “Most languages have been influenced at one time or another by contact” (Winford, n.d., p. 1). Since World War II, English has become a major source of loanwords in Japanese, shaping everything from everyday conversation to aesthetic trends.
This thesis explores why …

The Population Council is leading an evaluation of programs funded by the Girls First Fund (GFF) in the Dominican Republic (DR), India, and Niger. These three countries were chosen to maximize geographic, social, cultural, and economic diversity across contexts, but common to all three is the continued persistence of child marriage and the presence of collective efforts to eliminate it. The broader goal of this evaluation is to: 1) demonstrate proof of concept for the impact of GFF-supported programs; 2) examine key outcomes of interest to the GFF and the community-based organizations that it funds, including education, child marriage, and …

Not Plato's Closet: The Dialectic Of Embodied Counterstory Through Fashion On The Us/Mexico Border, Brita M. Arrington
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation is best understood as a journey about identity that took place over more than eight years. The journey was an exploration that began in one frame of mind and ended in a very different place. I fully anticipated this research to reflect the racial tensions surrounding my participants who are predominantly Latine students at UTEP, a "Hispanic serving" institution on the US/Mexico border, but we ended up a place more deeply personal to them. From a sample of 2000 FYC students and their instructors, 65 participants engaged in taking a survey about their dress practices, and 4 of …
