National Training Manual For Para Social Workers, Ministry Of Gender Labour And Social Development, Republic Of Uganda
National Training Manual For Para Social Workers, Ministry Of Gender Labour And Social Development, Republic Of Uganda
Humanitarian Task Force
Para social workers have become an integral part of Uganda’s social support system. Operating at the grassroots level, often in remote and underserved communities, these individuals provide critical services to vulnerable children, youth, families, and communities in need of support. In the face of limited professional human resources in the social welfare sector, Para Social Workers fill a vital gap, extending the reach of formal systems and ensuring that no one is left behind. This revised edition of the manual reflects the evolving nature of community and social work practice in Uganda. It incorporates new practical tools, and evidence-based approaches …

Pakistan@2050: Demographic Change, Future Projections, And Development Opportunities, Population Council
Population Policy and Demographic Analysis
Pakistan@2050 is a unique volume that provides comprehensive evidence and insights into the linkages between population dynamics and development. It illustrates Pakistan’s position regarding demographic transition and offers a regional comparison. The study highlights how population trends and dynamics significantly shape development outcomes, emphasizing the need to integrate these factors into both short-term and, most importantly, long-term planning and policy decisions. Long-term planning in Pakistan has faced persistent challenges related to poverty, climate change, and a tendency towards reactive rather than proactive interventions. These approaches often overlook the impact of high population growth on development gains.
It is vital to …

Replication Of Soft Skills Training In The Rohingya Camp And Host Community In Cox’S Bazar, Bangladesh, Md. Noorunnabi Talukder, Abdullah Al Mahmud Shohag, Mohammad Muktadir Hossain, Sharif M.I. Hossain, Ubaidur Rob
Humanitarian Task Force
The Population Council in collaboration with Research, Training and Management International (RTMI) and Underprivileged Children’s Education Program (UCEP) implemented a pilot project on soft skills training in Cox’s Bazar in 2022 and 2023. The purpose of this training was to improve the personal, social, and financial management skills of Rohingya youth, which would be useful on their return to Myanmar or during their interim period of stay in Bangladesh. This pilot initiative also included host community youth. The Council found the soft skills training relevant and necessary for the lives of Rohingya and host community youth and identified an increase …

Linking Research To Action To Address Unintended Pregnancy In Refugee Settings In Uganda, Baobab Research Programme Consortium
Linking Research To Action To Address Unintended Pregnancy In Refugee Settings In Uganda, Baobab Research Programme Consortium
Humanitarian Task Force
The evidence available to support and shape improved family planning (FP) programming in refugee settings is sparse, and little is known about how to effectively deliver such programming to the most vulnerable, including women and girls. Baobab is responding to these questions through two complementary formative studies on unintended pregnancy and abortion incidence in refugee settings in Uganda. The findings pointed to a critical mass of non-users who intend to use an FP method in the future, and of non-users who have no such intention, but are still supportive of FP use. To expand access to FP services using existing, …

Food Literacy And Applying Learnings Towards English Literacy, Andrew Wirtz
Food Literacy And Applying Learnings Towards English Literacy, Andrew Wirtz
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Food Literacy promotes the way people should consciously think about the food we ingest on a day-to-day basis. This paper explores how teachers can positively teach students how to be literate when it comes to food and how students can apply these learnings towards their English subject matter skills. This paper also explores how children from all economic backgrounds seek out highly processed foods (such as fast food) which are filled with various chemicals and additives, which in turn, can affect students' performance within the classroom in an negative manner.

Humanitarian Task Force
The Government of Uganda, civil society organisations, and international partners participated in a Data-to-Action (D2A) workshop in Kampala, Uganda, June 14–16, 2023. The workshop was co-convened by the Office of the Prime Minister’s Department of Refugees and the Baobab Research Programme Consortium, with support from the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development; UNHCR; and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters staff. The Humanitarian Violence Against Children and Youth Survey (HVACS) D2A workshop supports countries in creating violence prevention priorities directly informed by HVACS data. These priorities are created by linking HVACS data to the suite of evidenced-based …

Adolescent Girls Initiative–Kenya: Testing For Scale—Recommendations Report, Karen Austrian, Eva Ireri Muluve, Ruth Nanjekho, John A. Maluccio, Erica Soler-Hampejsek
Adolescents and Young People
The Adolescent Girls Initiative-Kenya, a randomized trial implemented between 2015 and 2021, was designed to test the short- and longer-term effects of two-year multisectoral and multilevel “cash plus” programs for adolescent girls aged 11–14 years. It was implemented in two marginalized areas of Kenya: Kibera, an urban informal settlement in Nairobi, and Wajir, a pastoralist rural county. Results showed that a multisectoral approach was an effective way to create positive change across a range of well-being factors for young adolescent girls, including education, health, and economic outcomes. The program had long-term sustainable effects. Throughout the testing for scale phase, PC-Kenya …

Adolescents and Young People
The Population Council, in collaboration with Research, Training and Management International (RTMI) and Underprivileged Children’s Education Program (UCEP), pilot tested a soft skills training intervention in two Rohingya camps and a vocational training center in the host community in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh in 2022. As a follow-up to the pilot program, the Council along with its partners rolled out soft skills training in four Rohingya camps and a vocational training center in the host community in 2023. The purpose of this training was to improve the personal, social, and financial management skills of Rohingya youth, which would be of use …

SWEDD Series: Best Practice Guide no. 3
This Guide is one of a series that retrospectively documents the process of implementing the interventions of the SWEDD project, and documents good practices, challenges and lessons learned. The “Sahel Women's Empowerment and Demographic Dividend” (SWEDD) project was launched in November 2015 with financial support from the World Bank, and technical support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the West African Health Organisation (WAHO). The research informing this Guide was led by the Population Council.

Gender, Education, Justice, and Equity (GEJE)
When education works, people thrive and societies flourish alongside economies. We have made real progress on primary enrollment on the global scale, with 90% of children enrolling in school. However, completion rates lag far behind—only 77% of children complete lower secondary school and 58% complete upper secondary. Those numbers decline sharply for those living in poverty, for girls, and for Indigenous communities, with 44% of adolescent girls in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) either dropping out of primary school or never attending at all.
Low educational attainment and illiteracy exclude children from the freedoms that come with learning and also …
