Chipatala Cha Pa Foni, Malawi's 'Health Center By Phone,' Improving Information Given About Pregnancy-Related Symptoms, Breakthrough Research, Villagereach May 2021

Chipatala Cha Pa Foni, Malawi's 'Health Center By Phone,' Improving Information Given About Pregnancy-Related Symptoms, Breakthrough Research, Villagereach

Reproductive Health

The Health Center by Phone, or "Chipatala cha pa Foni" (CCPF), was developed by Malawi’s Ministry of Health and VillageReach as a community-based hotline in the Balaka district of Malawi. CCPF was identified as an existing national health strategy with potential for providing Malawi’s women and their families important postpartum hemorrhage information. Because CCPF archives de-identified audio recordings of all calls, 28 telephone transcripts were qualitatively examined to assess whether women experiencing pregnancy-related complications such as postpartum bleeding call CCPF, and how hotline workers respond to them.

Are School Lunches Actually Healthy?, Jenna Cedor

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

For my research project I chose to examine whether school lunches are actually as healthy as they come out to be, and I will briefly look at why some frown upon them. While some individuals frown upon school lunches, if they are able to be served, they have to meet the requirements and standards that are in place. I want to be able to confidently tell those who are concerned that they can let their children eat the lunches that their schools provide them and not have a choice but to only eat a packed lunch. I also think some …

Strengthening Social And Behavior Change Measurement In The Rise Ii Program, Breakthrough Research Apr 2021

Strengthening Social And Behavior Change Measurement In The Rise Ii Program, Breakthrough Research

Reproductive Health

Current social and behavior change (SBC) measures for family planning (FP), maternal, newborn and child health, nutrition, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in Niger and Burkina Faso are extremely limited and mostly concentrated on output measures and individual health outcomes. Governments, donors, SBC implementing partners, and other stakeholders must consider expanding the use of SBC indicators, particularly those related to program reach and intermediary outcomes, to narrow programming focus, monitor progress, and determine jprogram effectiveness and impacts.

Adolescent Girls’ And Young Women’S Economic Empowerment Programs: Emerging Insights From A Review Of Reviews, Nicole Haberland, Thomas De Hoop, Sapna Desai, Sarah Engebretsen, Thoai Ngo

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This review of reviews aimed to assess what interventions, especially group-based interventions, show promise in economically empowering adolescent girls and young women in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). In addition, we examined the promise of specific economic components, combinations of components, and core topics. We searched five databases as well as other sources and identified 2,467 citations, resulting in 17 reviews, 10 of which quantified their results. We found too little evidence to classify any of the examined interventions as clearly “effective.” None of the reviews found negative effects or harmful findings, however. Most intervention–outcome pairings were unknown; that is, …

The Adolescent Girls Initiative-Kenya—Executive Summary: Two-Year Follow Up Results, Population Council Mar 2021

The Adolescent Girls Initiative-Kenya—Executive Summary: Two-Year Follow Up Results, Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

In Kenya, early pregnancy is a challenge for girls that often has immediate effects on their educational opportunities, future implications for their social, health, and economic outcomes, and immediate and ongoing negative impacts on their children. Early pregnancy is an outcome shaped by a myriad of issues affecting an adolescent girl’s life—including community norms on gender roles, violence, and the social value of girls; barriers to formal education; household poverty; lack of economic independence; experience of violence; and social isolation. For girls to achieve well-being in early and late adolescence, no single-sector intervention—whether it be education, health, wealth creation, or …

Early Effects Of The Covid-19 Lockdown On Children In Rural Bangladesh, Momoe Makino, Abu S. Shonchoy, Zaki Wahhaj

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Using data collected through a telephone-based survey in rural Bangladesh during the height of the pandemic, we present evidence on the effects of COVID-19-led lockdown and school closures on children, focusing on three child-related outcomes: time use of children during the school closure, plans regarding children's schooling continuation, and the incidence of child marriages. Our analysis reveals heterogeneity in the effects of lockdown and school closure in terms of the child's gender and the type of shocks. We find a decrease in children's study time and an increase in time spent on household chores during the school closure, and these …

HIV and AIDS

This study builds on the USAID-funded prevention of mother-to-child transmission service delivery program (IMPROVE) already being implemented by Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation in Lesotho. Rather than designing a suite of entirely new services and delivery platforms, the intervention (conducted under Project SOAR) focused on improving existing services and strengthening the connection between facility- and community-based care. This brief describes the approach and key quantitative findings of the costing component of the IMPROVE intervention from the service provider perspective.

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Women’s groups are widely implemented and researched, particularly in South Asia and Africa. However, there is no consistent approach to describing their varied implementation models, which hinders construct validity and accurate interpretation of evidence. This paper proposes a typology and reporting checklist to support transferability of evidence across models and settings.

High Impact Practices—Encouraging Empowerment And Self-Care Through Participatory Women’S Groups And Group Antenatal Care: Supporting Women To Be At The Center Of Their Own Care As Active Participants, Tracy Mcclair

Reproductive Health

The Population Council developed High Impact Practice (HIP) briefs for three strategies that show promise for improving prevention, detection, and management of Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy (HDPs). This brief focuses on one of those strategies: encouraging empowerment and self-care through participatory women’s groups and group antenatal care. Key points presented are: highly participatory, group-based interventions—such as community-based women’s groups and group antenatal and postnatal care (ANC/PNC)—provide opportunities for women to share their experiences and knowledge with others, discuss the local context for challenges and how to address them, and promote empowerment and agency; participation in these groups is associated with …

Population, Development, And Policy, John Bongaarts, Michele Gragnolati, S. Amer Ahmed, Jamaica Corker

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The extensive literature on population and development yielded few policy-relevant results before the discovery of the demographic dividend. This dividend refers to a rise in per capita income that results from an increase in workers per capita as a population’s fertility declines. This paper describes the role of the demographic dividend in economic development in developing countries and summarizes policy options for strengthening the dividend. The first section reviews the demographic transition with an emphasis on its later phases when declining fertility and a changing population age structure produce the dividend. Next, the demographic drivers of the dividend and its …
