Provider Behavior Change: Social And Behavior Change Approaches To Quality Of Care In Family Planning, Breakthrough Research
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
Breakthrough RESEARCH was USAID’s flagship social and behavior change (SBC) research and evaluation project to drive the generation, packaging, and use of innovative SBC research to inform programming. A six-year project (2017–2023), Breakthrough RESEARCH was led by the Population Council in collaboration with our consortium partners: Tulane University, Avenir Health, Population Reference Bureau, Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University, and ideas42. This legacy resource highlights evidence, insights, and learnings over the past six years from Breakthrough RESEARCH’s work to advance provider behavior change (PBC) programming and fill critical PBC evidence gaps.
Adolescent Education, Health And Wellbeing Status In Four Counties In Kenya: Two Years Into The Covid-19 Pandemic, Population Council Kenya
Adolescent Education, Health And Wellbeing Status In Four Counties In Kenya: Two Years Into The Covid-19 Pandemic, Population Council Kenya
Adolescents and Young People
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in widespread school closures globally, including in Kenya. This educational disruption had potential adverse consequences for adolescent school learners including school dropout, learning loss, opportunity losses, loss of previously acquired skills, and loss of socio-emotional benefits of time spent with peers and teachers. This study was undertaken in four counties in Kenya—two urban (Nairobi, Kisumu) and two rural (Kilifi and Wajir). Focusing on adolescent girls aged 10–19, the study increased understanding of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on girls’ education outcomes to enable implementation of policies and programs to address immediate harms caused, and to …

Using Audience Segmentation Approaches To Inform Integrated Family Planning And Maternal Health Programs In Niger, Breakthrough Research
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
Understanding the specific behavioral determinants and barriers to health-seeking for reproductive and maternal health services is critical to developing social and behavior change (SBC) programs that can best address the needs of the community. Effective SBC interventions can incorporate audience segmentation, the practice of dividing an audience into subgroups based on demographic, psychographic, and/or behavioral factors to develop tailored SBC approaches that are most likely to resonate with each audience subgroup. This brief presents study results of audience profiles for women of reproductive age in Niger with a focus on three reproductive and maternal health behaviors. It is intended to …

Comparing The Attitudes, Norms, And Beliefs Of Husbands And Wives For Reproductive, Maternal, And Child Health—Evidence That Drives Effective Social Behavior Change Programming In Kebbi State, Breakthrough Research
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
This brief provides rigorous evidence-based insights to implementers and researchers of social and behavior change (SBC) programs that seek to improve community knowledge, attitudes, norms and behaviors for improved health of pregnant and postpartum women. The brief focuses on key behaviors including early breastfeeding initiation within one hour of birth and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, while also uncovering the barriers and facilitators to the practice of these positive health behaviors. It is one of a series that presents findings from a Breakthrough RESEARCH study that uniquely captures data on a wide range of psychosocial drivers …

Evaluation Of Rise Ii Integrated Social And Behavior Change Activities In Niger: Baseline Report, Leanne Dougherty, Lynn Abu Turk, Nrupa Jani, Chaibou Dadi
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
Breakthrough RESEARCH is conducting a mixed-methods study that includes quantitative methods to assess differential changes over time in key health outcomes associated with Resilience in the Sahel Enhanced (RISE) II's integrated social and behavioral change (SBC) strategy and qualitative methods to explain how and why gender-related changes occurred or were associated with these changes. This technical report presents descriptive baseline findings for the quantitative portion of the evaluation. This information will support RISE II's Resilience Food Security Activity partners to understand how to tailor planned SBC approaches to address barriers to adopting targeted health behaviors.

Adolescents and Young People
The Adolescent Atlas for Action (A3) is a suite of tools that summarizes the lives and needs of adolescents around the world to promote evidence-based decision-making. Through accessible and easy-to-grasp data just one click away, the A3 bridges the gap between decisionmakers and evidence to inform policies and programs. The A3 Policy Checklist, created by the Population Council’s GIRL Center, features a curated list of national policies relevant to the lives of adolescents under 9 thematic domains, and whether countries have enacted each policy. The checklist presents a snapshot of commitments made to achieving adolescent wellbeing through adolescent-focused policies. As …
