Dapivirine Vaginal Ring: A Long-Acting Ring For Women's Hiv Prevention, Ipm South Africa
Dapivirine Vaginal Ring (PrEP Ring)
Despite progress against HIV/AIDS, women continue to face persistently high infection rates, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The monthly dapivirine vaginal ring, developed by International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) and acquired by the Population Council, adapts a medical technology commonly used to deliver hormones to women—a vaginal ring—in response to high HIV infection rates in women. The DVR could fill an important gap for women who are unable or choose not to use other available products.

Dapivirine Vaginal Ring (PrEP Ring)
Leveraging our experience developing the monthly dapivirine vaginal ring (DVR or "PrEP ring"), which received a positive opinion from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2020 for women’s HIV risk reduction, the Population Council has developed a 3-month DVR as a line-extension of the monthly DVR, with plans to submit for EMA review in the near future. The 3-month DVR is expected to significantly reduce the annual costs of HIV prevention.

Dapivirine Vaginal Ring (PrEP Ring)
Leveraging our experience developing the monthly dapivirine vaginal ring (DVR or “PrEP ring”), which received a positive opinion from the European Medicines Agency in 2020 for women’s HIV risk reduction, the Population Council is developing a 3-month multipurpose vaginal ring to help women protect against both HIV and unintended pregnancy. This ring is designed to slowly release the antiretroviral (ARV) drug, dapivirine and the contraceptive hormone, levonorgestrel.

By combining needs assessments, current evidence, and practice-based research, the series sheds light on the alignments and gaps in Kenya’s efforts to achieve gender equity in education. This brief assesses …

Social and structural determinants of health (SSDoH) significantly impact equity among young people aged 10–24 in the US. Prior research shows that connectedness and support in school, family, and peer environments are crucial determinants of youth health and well-being. Understanding local variations in these relationships and their impact on health equity, while vital for policy and investment, remains a challenge. Council researchers explored relationships between select SSDoH and health outcomes among young people at sub-state levels to assess the potential of national survey data to inform decision-making & improve health equity.
