Wajir, Kenya: Adult Covid-19 Perceptions, Prevention Practices And Impact—Responses From The First Round Of Adult Data Collection In Wajir, Kenya, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
From July 16–30, 2020, a COVID-19 knowledge, attitudes, and practices phone survey was completed with 1,322 adults in Wajir, Kenya. Households were part of the ongoing Adolescent Girls Initiative–Kenya cohort across 79 villages in Wajir, an underdeveloped area of Kenya. The pandemic and associated social distancing and lockdown measures have had a large economic, health, and social impact on respondents. Many are earning less income, and a substantial percentage are experiencing food insecurity. Relative to need, very few adults are receiving assistance. Among the recommendations in this brief are that public education campaigns focus on ensuring that people know that …

Kenya: Gender Effects Of Covid-19—Responses From Fourth Round Of Data Collection In Five Nairobi Informal Settlements (Kibera, Huruma, Kariobangi, Dandora, And Mathare), Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Responses from the fourth round of COVID-19 data collection in five Nairobi informal settlements are described in this brief. On June 13–16, 2020, phone interviews with 1,529 adults were completed. Results suggest that women are more likely than men to report increased tension, arguing, and household violence related to COVID-19 mitigation measures. Women are twice as likely to take on more unpaid domestic work compared to men due to coronavirus. While women were earning less than their male partners prior to COVID-19, this gap has widened. Of those in a partnership, 44 percent say both they and their partner are …

Kilifi, Kenya: Adult Covid-19 Perceptions, Prevention Practices And Impact—Responses From The First Round Of Adult Data Collection In Kilifi, Kenya, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Between August 15 and 18, 2020, a COVID-19 phone survey was completed with 1,288 adults in Kilifi, Kenya, along the coast of Kenya, north of Mombasa. The households were part the Evaluation of the Nia Project cohort. The COVID-19 pandemic and associated social distancing and lockdown measures have had a large economic, health, and social impact on respondents. Many are earning less income due to COVID-19 even as costs of household items have risen, and a substantial percentage report experiencing food insecurity. Relative to need, very few adults are receiving assistance in the form of cash, vouchers, or essential items. …
Social, Health, Education And Economic Effects Of Covid-19 On Adolescent Girls In Kenya: Responses From Data Collection In Five Nairobi Informal Settlements (Kibera, Huruma, Kariobangi, Dandora, And Mathare), June 2020—Nairobi, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Between June 13 and 16, 2020, a phone survey was completed with 1,022 adolescents ages 10–19 in Dandora, Huruma, Kariobangi, Kibera, and Mathare, Kenya. All participants were part of cohorts that the Population Council was following prior to COVID-19. As noted in this brief, adolescents living in these informal settlements have been severely impacted by COVID-19 and the mitigation measures put in place mainly due to school closures and economic stress. Social protection and food distribution is needed, with attention to reaching adolescents experiencing hunger. There appears to be more pressure on boys to work or look for income, while …
Social, Health, Education And Economic Effects Of Covid-19 On Adolescent Girls In Kenya: Results From Adolescent Surveys In Kilifi, Nairobi, Wajir, And Kisumu Counties, October 2020, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Between June and August 2020, a COVID-19 mobile-phone survey was completed in four locations across Kenya with 3,921 adolescents ages 10–19. A total of 1,022 interviews were completed in Nairobi, 602 in Kisumu, 1,063 in Kilifi, and 1,234 in Wajir. Households in each site were sampled from underlying cohort studies conducted by the Population Council. As noted in this brief, awareness of COVID-19 and adoption of preventive behaviors is high. Most adolescents have not had COVID-19 or know anyone who has, but all are being impacted by the mitigation policies (e.g., physical distancing measures and school closures). With phased school …
Kenya: Covid-19 Perceptions, Stigma And Impact—Responses From Fourth Round Of Data Collection In Five Nairobi Informal Settlements (Kibera, Huruma, Kariobangi, Dandora, And Mathare), Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Responses from the fourth round of COVID-19 data collection in five Nairobi informal settlements are described in this brief. On June 13–16, 2020, phone interviews with 1,529 adults were completed. Results suggest that people are relaxing restrictions on mobility and moving more freely three months into the pandemic. While perceived risk of coronavirus has stayed about the same, the proportion that said they are at high risk because they interact with a lot of people jumped up since May, the proportion reporting they avoid public transportation decreased, and the proportion saying they are staying indoors more also decreased. Stigma is …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Between August 15 and 18, 2020, a COVID-19 phone survey was completed with 603 10–19-year-old adolescents in Kisumu, Kenya, a port city on Lake Victoria. Households were part of the DREAMS program and evaluation cohort. This brief concludes that COVID-19 public education campaigns in Kisumu should focus on addressing the health, economic, and social impacts of lockdowns. Knowledge of symptoms and transmission is relatively high, and most adolescents still say they are interacting with a lot of people when they go out. Ensuring mask wearing, handwashing, and staying home unless urgent is critical to reducing transmission. Ensuring access to educational …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Between August 15 and 18, 2020, a COVID-19 phone survey was completed with 1,603 10–19-year-old adolescents in Kilifi, Kenya, north of Mombasa. Households were part of the Evaluation of the Nia Project cohort. This brief concludes that COVID-19 public education campaigns in Kisumu should focus on addressing the health, economic, and social impacts of lockdowns. It should be clarified that one can have COVID-19 and not show symptoms and can infect others even if asymptomatic, and common myths surrounding COVID-19 should be addressed. The need to expand the options for students to access educational materials during the period of school …

Perceptions And Use Of Non-Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garments For Management Of Postpartum Hemorrhage In Malawi, Breakthrough Research
Reproductive Health
The non-pneumatic anti-shock garment (NASG) is a simple, neoprene and Velcro device that can be used to treat shock, resuscitate, stabilize, and prevent further bleeding in women experiencing postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), a valuable tool to reduce PPH deaths and severe morbidities. NASG use is recommended “in settings where delays in management of PPH are common, particularly where constraints to offer blood products and definitive treatment exist. NASG is an intervention that should be considered as a policy option while the standard conditions for care are being optimized.”

Evaluating The Inclusion Of Family Planning Within The National Health Insurance Benefits Package In Ghana, Kamil Fuseini, Augustine Ankomah
Evaluating The Inclusion Of Family Planning Within The National Health Insurance Benefits Package In Ghana, Kamil Fuseini, Augustine Ankomah
Reproductive Health
Contraceptive use in Ghana has remained low despite annual increases since 2012. Having a high unmet need for family planning (FP) suggests that there may be barriers to access and uptake. Over time, several policies, including Ghana’s Costed Implementation Plan from 2015–20, have suggested FP initiatives to improve contraceptive use yet they have not been entirely implemented. Further, although FP was included in the health insurance act passed in 2003, amended in 2008, and revised in 2012, which indicated that health-care benefits include FP, people continue to pay out of pocket for services at National Health Insurance Authority facilities because …

Twelve Recommended Sbc Indicators For Family Planning: Indicator Reference Sheets, Breakthrough Research
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
This document provides 12 indicator reference sheets to accompany the “Twelve Recommended SBC Indicators for Family Planning” reference brief. Indicator reference sheets help program implementers define measurable indicators of their programs’ successes and failures, ensure data quality, and help users correctly interpret data produced by an organization. These proposed reference sheets, for indicators adapted from the social and behavior change (SBC) indicator bank for family planning (FP) and service delivery, will help nations, donors, and implementing partners strengthen their measurement of SBC activities and programs—for continuous learning, improved programming, and increased advocacy for greater investment.

Frontline Health: Harmonizing Metrics, Advancing Evidence, Accelerating Policy—Project Overview Brief, Frontline Health Project
Reproductive Health
Despite decades of technological and medical progress globally, half the world’s population still lacks access to essential health care due to insufficient numbers and types of health workers, especially in remote settings. There is growing recognition that well-supported community health workers (CHWs) are essential for effective delivery of primary health care (PHC). Despite broad consensus on the importance of CHWs, few countries have successfully integrated them as part of PHC at scale, and many lack official statistics on the performance of CHW programs. USAID, UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation developed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on …

To meet the FP2020 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), significant investments are required by countries and donors in priority areas, including sustainable financing, reaching all adolescents, expanding availability of services to the poorest and hard-to-reach populations, and improving the quality and increasing the range of methods available. Studies show that vouchers can substantially contribute to SDG goals by expanding contraceptive access and choice among underserved populations. Vouchers can be an effective financing tool to enhance equity, increase access, and improve the quality of FP services available to underserved populations within Pakistan.

Characteristics Of Brokers In Relation To The Migration Of Girls And Young Women In Ethiopia, Annabel Erulkar
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This research brief focuses on brokers in Ethiopia—both licensed and unlicensed—who place migrating girls into jobs such as domestic work, waitressing, and commercial sex work. The characteristics of brokers, their contacts, ways of working, and how brokers both support and harm migrant girls is examined. Brokers sometimes provide support to girls that goes beyond job placement, such as providing girls with necessary help in their initial days, including financial assistance, short-term lodging, and food. Alternatively, brokers can be a source of considerable risk for girls. It was reported that brokers often exploit newly arriving girls for sex, expose them to …
