The Victorian Crisis Of Faith: Uncertainty, Pessimism, Morality, And Monsters. A Look At Nineteenth-Century British Gothic Horror And The Unassailable Unknown, Jay Schroeder
Dissertations and Theses
This work investigates how Gothic narratives employed negative aesthetics, monstrous bodies, exploded meaning, and an unshakable mood of uncertainty to explore rising fears of dwindling morality and impending human doom during the long nineteenth century. Using Eugene Thacker’s cosmic pessimism, Sianne Ngai’s concept of tone, and Stephen Greenblatt’s theories of resonance and wonder, combined with monster theory, Gothic criticism, biological studies of fear, and nineteenth-century studies in medicine, science, and literature, I investigate how these texts constructed monstrous bodies to create an atmosphere of fear that reflected a culture of pessimism and a crisis of faith to contend, albeit unsuccessfully, …

Humanitarian Task Force
The Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys (VACS), led by national governments with technical assistance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as part of the Together for Girls (TfG) partnership, have documented the magnitude and prevalence of sexual, physical, and emotional VAC in more than 20 low- and middle-income countries, with a view to informing national prevention and response programs in development settings. This report presents key findings from the first-ever VACS conducted exclusively in a humanitarian context—specifically, in refugee settings in Uganda. The report couples these findings with proceedings of a dissemination workshop for humanitarian …

Using The Confidante Method To Measure New Or Recent Cases Of Female Genital Mutilation: Insights From Narok County, Kenya, Francis Obare, Dennis Matanda, Tchaiwe Zulu, Stephen Kizito
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
This report presents insights from a study conducted in Narok County of Kenya that used the Confidante method to identify new or recent cases of FGM. The study was a cross-sectional community-based survey conducted in November and December of 2022 among 703 women and girls aged 15-49 years in Narok East sub-county of Narok County. Participants were asked about the attitudes and experiences of FGM of up to three of their confidantes, defined as persons with whom they would share private information and who would also share such information with them. They provided information on a total of 1,684 confidantes. …

How To Measure Provider Behavior Change Impact, Breakthrough Research
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
Developed by Breakthrough RESEARCH, this guide is intended to help program planners and designers better understand provider behavior change (PBC) initiatives and their impact on service delivery and quality. The guide is also meant to advance measurement of PBC by providing frameworks and illustrative examples of how PBC measurement can inform program planning and design. Finally, the guide offers ways to continue building the evidence base for PBC approaches and impact.
Human Creationism And Experimentation In Science-Fiction: A Case Study Of Frankenstein And Flowers For Algernon, Taylor Casey
Human Creationism And Experimentation In Science-Fiction: A Case Study Of Frankenstein And Flowers For Algernon, Taylor Casey
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
As a genre, science-fiction has the ability to operate within historical and scientific contexts in order to present stories that include speculative elements of reality, while still maintaining an aspect of empiricism. Science-fiction allows for the exploration of themes and concepts that are unknown to the current epoch of knowledge and provides an inquisitive look on the human condition. The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of human creationism and experimentation within two science-fiction texts. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Daniel Keyes’ Flowers for Algernon, two texts that were written in different scientific eras, both provide similar tales …

Appalachian Adolsescence: A Creative Exploration Of Home, Nature, And Social Progress, Eleni Karelis
Appalachian Adolsescence: A Creative Exploration Of Home, Nature, And Social Progress, Eleni Karelis
Lewis Honors College Thesis Collection
The Central Appalachian coalfields provide a rich culture to the American landscape, often shielded from outsiders to the region. While prevailing stereotypes of the region describe those living there as two-dimensional, the identity of Appalachia has always been complex— whether through the rich history with labor struggles, gender equality, or social progress. Finding one’s identity in a place that has been so strictly held to its stereotypical perceptions can be difficult. This creative project draws inspiration from my own experiences in Southeastern Kentucky as well as a myriad of stories collected through archival research in the Special Collections Research Center …
Participation In The Relaxing Listening Program: Postsecondary L2 Learner Responses And Effects On Listening Comprehension, Thanh Ha Vu
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Based on theories and practices developed by Pimsleur (2013), Hoge (2014), and Delong (2017), the Relaxing Listening Program (RLP) provides an innovative learning opportunity to enhance L2 learners’ vocabulary acquisition and the development of their listening and speaking skills with the aim to reduce anxiety in the learning process. This research study examines how postsecondary L2 learners in an intensive English program at an American university responded to the RLP and explores its effect on their listening comprehension and other targeted language skills. Though repetitive listening is still open to debate regarding its practice and impact on language learning, this …
American Sign Language (Asl): Linguistically And Cognitively - Why Deaf People Should Learn Asl & Learn It Early, Helena Isabel Berczes
American Sign Language (Asl): Linguistically And Cognitively - Why Deaf People Should Learn Asl & Learn It Early, Helena Isabel Berczes
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis presents data supporting the value of including American Sign Language (ASL) in the education of Deaf people. Historically, Deaf education has not fully included or has excluded ASL in an effort to focus on English due to a belief that ASL hinders learning English. ASL must fit within the definition of language with unique linguistic features for its inclusion in language education. Plasticity of the brain lends itself to the ability for language processing networks to form based on language experience. Deaf people can fully access visual language versus auditory language. Therefore, acquiring ASL early in life, during …

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
The goals of this project were to: i) increase comprehensive HIV service delivery among MSM, transgender women, and their sexual partners, ii) build the capacity of a local NGO to function as a one-stop-shop for HIV and STI services, and iii) build evidence around the “hub and spokes” service delivery model, how to best reach transgender populations, and to pilot an intervention intended to promote mental health and reduce intersectional, internalized stigma experienced by sexual and gender minorities (both living with HIV and at risk of HIV acquisition). The project implemented a “hub and spokes” model of service provision of …
Impacts On Native American Literacy Throughout The 1800s, Alyssa Lawhorn
Impacts On Native American Literacy Throughout The 1800s, Alyssa Lawhorn
Undergraduate Research Awards
The literacy of Indigenous peoples of America underwent extreme transformations as the tedious attempts by descendants of colonizers to integrate aspects of white American life into Indigenous customs continued. Native American literacy exclusively consisted of oral traditions prior to the arrival of British colonizers in 1607 in Jamestown, Virginia. These oral traditions were, and still are, key elements of Indigenous culture as they serve to distribute cultural lessons, record histories, and share religious legends through the generations and amongst others. As the basis of Indigenous culture these traditions were one of the primary features of Native American life that scholars …
