Grammar Instruction Embedded Within Writing Instruction In The Secondary Ela Classroom, Erika Scheu-Millek Jul 2023

Grammar Instruction Embedded Within Writing Instruction In The Secondary Ela Classroom, Erika Scheu-Millek

Masters Projects

Available research indicates that American students are underperforming in the area of writing. Grammar is the foundation of the English language, so it follows that an understanding of the language system is inherent in the act of writing. Grammar instruction, however, has been largely absent from American ELA classrooms for the past half century. This project examines the research which supports grammar instruction as part of the writing process and synthesizes the most promising research findings into a writing unit for 11th and 12th grade students. This unit includes a genre-based framework for instruction, directed writing, sentence combining, and instructional …

Sentiment Analysis On Hindi-English Code-Mix Data, Balwant Singh Bisht Jun 2023

Sentiment Analysis On Hindi-English Code-Mix Data, Balwant Singh Bisht

Doctoral Theses

Social media has emerged as a prominent platform for expressing opinions, leading to the development of a unique language known as code-mix text. This form of language incorporates words from multiple languages, such as Hindi and English in India. While sentiment analysis techniques have achieved moderate success in handling English texts, the same level of effectiveness has not been attained when dealing with code-mix text. In this study, we propose deep learning techniques to address the challenges of sentiment analysis in code-mix Hindi-English text data. Leveraging a pre-trained cross-lingual large language model called XLM-RoBERTa, we employ a transfer learning approach. …

“Young, Gifted, And Black”: Understanding The Complex Experiences Of High-Achieving Black Students In Ap Classes At A Diverse Suburban High School, Jody Elliott-Schrimmer

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the social and academic experiences of Black students in AP English classes at a diverse suburban high school. This study aimed to illuminate their experiences while giving voice to this traditionally marginalized group. Students provided recommendations for increasing academic success and belonging for future students as schools continually work toward gender and racial equity in the AP classroom. In this Critical Race Theory (CRT) oriented study, I sought to understand the essence of the Black experience in predominantly White academic spaces through a phenomenological methodology. I analyzed the significant moments and …

Intertidal

For the first year ever, Intertidal has surfaced to showcase the art of Cal Poly's students and faculty. An 'intertidal zone' is an area where the ocean meets the land--hidden during the high tide and exposed during the low. Our journal embodies the moment where the tide recedes, revealing stories previously hidden.

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Graduate students in the humanities are hungry for career exploration as they face limited academic career options and feel called to work beyond the academy. Career preparation is typically left to graduate advisors, and then, the focus tends to be on academic career preparation. This article details how a required, introductory graduate class was reimagined to integrate career exploration using a framework at the heart of Ignatian spirituality and education: discernment. The authors outline the course and two assignments that can be adapted and applied to any graduate course. The authors share reflections on how the class has impacted their …

Sales, Jessica Atrio, Shakti Shetty, Caio Sant’Anna Marinho, Brady Zieman, Lisa Haddad, Barbara Friedland

Center for Biomedical Research (CBR)

Background: Intravaginal rings (IVRs) are being developed as multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) for simultaneous HIV and pregnancy prevention. However, no empirical data exists to support the current 54-58mm size as ideal. Understanding the impact of IVR size on adherence is critical for developing a product that can be used correctly and consistently. Methods: We conducted a randomized, open-label, 3-way crossover trial comparing adherence, preference, and acceptability of 3 non-medicated silicone IVRs of differing external diameters: 46mm, 56mm and 66mm. 24 couples in Atlanta, GA and Bronx, NY were randomized to the sequence of IVR use, used each continuously …

A Review Of Ai-Powered Writing Tools And Their Implications For Academic Integrity In The Language Classroom, Jasper Roe, Willy A. Renandya, George M. Jacobs

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Writers have many digital tools available to help them with the creation of text. In some cases, these tools have been in existence for a long time, such as spellcheckers and basic grammar checkers that are available on word processing software. Today, new and increasingly more advanced tools are in use, and the ramifications of their use are not yet fully understood, particularly in the language classroom. Public interest in such tools has reached new levels with the release of artificially intelligent tools such as ChatGPT. In addition to this, the speed at which assistive writing technologies are developing may …

Biruh Tesfa (“Bright Future)” is the name of a program designed in the mid-2000s to address the disadvantage of out-of-school girls in urban Ethiopia. The program was originally designed to address social isolation by bringing girls together in safe spaces groups with adult female mentors and providing them with skills-building activities, including life skills, reproductive health, HIV education, nonformal education and referrals, and training. This evaluation examines various aspects of the Biruh Tesfa for All Program: characteristics of beneficiaries, including domestic workers; patterns of attendance, absenteeism, and dropout; indicators of mental health such as self-reported anxiety, sadness, and depression; and …

Investigating English-Language Dialect-Adjusted Models, Samiha Datta May 2023

Investigating English-Language Dialect-Adjusted Models, Samiha Datta

Computer Science Senior Theses

This thesis describes several approaches to better understand how large language models interpret different dialects of the English language. Our goal is to consider multiple contexts of textual data and to analyze how English-language dialects are realized in them, as well as how a variety of machine learning techniques handle these differences. We focus on two genres of text data: news and social media. In the news context, we establish a dataset covering news articles from five countries and four US states and consider language modeling analysis, topic and sentiment distributions, and manual analysis before performing nine experiments and evaluating …

Hybrid simultaneous teaching, surgical masks, Lysol wipes, and uncertainty capture the zeitgeist of teaching during COVID-19. This study builds on teachers’ daily stressors in the classroom. Teachers entered the 2020-2021 school year having to learn many firsts. The purpose of this study was to understand the interplay of work-life lived experiences of secondary English teachers with moments of anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a post-intentional phenomenological …

Tsenacommacah’S Role In The Survival Of Jamestown, Brandon J. Hewitt

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

How was a small, unprepared, sick group of 105 English settlers in 1607 able to settle squarely in the middle of a native confederacy whose numbers surpassed 15,000 individuals? This work will attempt to answer this question. At the same time, it will explain how a small group of Englishmen could quickly expand and become the first thriving English colony in North America despite being in the middle of Tsenacommacah, home of the Chesapeake Algonquian chiefdom. This research will place the focus on the Powhatan chief's decision-making processes regarding economics and politics as the reasons the English were able to …
