Partnership For Prevention: A Report Of A Meeting Between Women's Health Advocates, Program Planners, And Scientists, Population Council Jan 1994

Partnership For Prevention: A Report Of A Meeting Between Women's Health Advocates, Program Planners, And Scientists, Population Council

Reproductive Health

In May 1994, the Population Council, in conjunction with the Pacific Institute for Women's Health and the International Women's Health Coalition, hosted a meeting for women's health advocates from around the world to discuss the development of microbicides. This process was the first step in building greater understanding and mutual respect among women's health advocates and Population Council staff and scientists with regard to the technology of microbicides. Participants hoped that the recommendations resulting from this initiative would have a positive influence not only on the development of microbicides, but on all reproductive health technologies. This report aims to reproduce …

Reproductive Health Approach To Family Planning, Population Council

Reproductive Health

This report collects presentations from a panel held on Professional Development Day at the USAID Cooperating Agencies meeting in November 1994. The panel was designed to review key reproductive health elements that relate to family planning, including: reproductive tract and sexually transmitted infections, including AIDS; the prevention and treatment of unsafe abortion; pregnancy, labor, and delivery care; and postpartum care. While there is increasing international consensus that family planning should be broadened to include reproductive health care, it is far from clear as to how this should be done, and which elements should be incorporated. This panel explored some of …

Factors Affecting The Family Planning Program Drop-Out Rate In Bukidnon, Philippines, Lita Sealza

Reproductive Health

This study has involved interviews with a randomly selected sample of 389 family planning (FP) acceptors from 20 barangays in Bukidnon province, Philippines. Respondents were currently married women who had either continued to use family planning (FP) since their initial acceptance (current users) or who had stopped using FP altogether (dropouts). Findings from the present study are expected to shed light on several aspects of the dropout problem, namely: How extensive is this problem and how accurate are the DOH records in this regard? How do FP acceptors view their local FP clinic and the services offered? What reasons are …

A sample of 154 clients who received a family planning (FP) method in one of 30 CSI clinics were followed up over a period of 19 months through a series of home interviews. The interviews monitored clients' use of the FP method received at the clinic as well as their satisfaction with that method and the services at CSI. Results of the present study show that provider training on counseling and interpersonal communication has a positive impact …

Emotionality In Free Recall: Language Specificity In Bilingual Memory, L. J. Anooshian, Paula T. Hertel Jan 1994

Emotionality In Free Recall: Language Specificity In Bilingual Memory, L. J. Anooshian, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

Bilingual subjects (Spanish English) who had acquired fluency in their second language after 8 years of age rated 18 emotional and 18 neutral words for ease of pronunciation, implied activity, or emotionality; half of each type was presented in Spanish and half in English. During a subsequent, unexpected test of free recall subjects recalled more emotional than neutral words, but only for words that had been presented in the native language. This finding applied across native-language groups and suggests that emotion provides a basis for language specificity in bilingual memory.

The Thousand Appliances: Virginia Woolf And The Tools Of Visual Literacy., Janice M. Stein Jan 1994

The Thousand Appliances: Virginia Woolf And The Tools Of Visual Literacy., Janice M. Stein

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The texts of Virginia Stephen Woolf are rife with references to writers' tools, which she referred to in her diary as "the thousand appliances one needs for writing even a sentence." This dissertation examines the exact nature of Woolf's "need" for the tools of her craft and their influence upon her thought and art. Pens, and by association, ink and the writer's hands, were the center of all her authorial experiences and provided the literal link between the idea of art and its fruition as a work of art. The graphic shapes of words and paralinguistic devices such as punctuation …

Meaning And Matricide: Reading Woolf Via Kristeva, Miglena I. Nikolchina Jan 1993

Meaning And Matricide: Reading Woolf Via Kristeva, Miglena I. Nikolchina

Digitized Theses

The thesis examines the psychoanalytic myth of matricide in its relevance for a feminist understanding of literary history. The first half of the dissertation explores the problem of matricide in the terms offered by Kristeva's theory. My study emphasizes the larger context of Kristeva's work which is not confined to Freud and Lacan only; the effects of its cultural substratum involving such diverse traits as Byzantine iconograpy, East Orthodox dogma, and Bulgarian language and folklore; and the implications of its form as a "polylogue"--i.e. a transmutation of Bakhtin's polyphonic novel into a theory conscious of its fictional and semiotic dimensions.;In …

The Dialogical Keats: Studies In A Bakhtinian Approach To Keats' Narrative Poems, Michael J. Sider Jan 1993

The Dialogical Keats: Studies In A Bakhtinian Approach To Keats' Narrative Poems, Michael J. Sider

Digitized Theses

A tradition of criticism in Keats studies has constructed a view of the poet as a writer who is entirely disengaged from history and of his poems as completely finished products, self-contained and ahistorical. This view of the poet and his poems dominates our present understanding of Keats. This dissertation, "The dialogical Keats: Studies in a Bakhtinian approach to Keats' narrative poems," is an attempt to develop a reading of Keats' poetry which uncovers those qualities in the poems that have been denied by the tradition of Keats criticism. Bakhtin's view of language as shared social territory provides a tool …

"His Body Well Be Red": The Politics Of Representing The Body In "The Faerie Queene", David Sean Kinahan Jan 1993

"His Body Well Be Red": The Politics Of Representing The Body In "The Faerie Queene", David Sean Kinahan

Digitized Theses

This study explores the representations of the body in Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene and several other early modern texts. It takes as its premise the Foucauldian notion that the body, born into culture, is never entirely present in itself, but that it is actively produced in discourse; the body is not simply the object on which power operates but the result of a negotiation of its fashionings. The apparent naturalness of bodily presence is used in discursive practice for its authority, and constructions of the body lend formative force to ideological and political ideas and organizations. The regulation of …

Lyric Trials Lyric And Rhetoric In Contemporary Poetry: Seamus Heaney, Adrienne Rich, A R Ammons, John Ashbery, Kevin Vincent Mcguirk Jan 1993

Lyric Trials Lyric And Rhetoric In Contemporary Poetry: Seamus Heaney, Adrienne Rich, A R Ammons, John Ashbery, Kevin Vincent Mcguirk

Digitized Theses

Lyric Trials is a comparative study of four contemporary lyric poets: Seamus Heaney, Adrienne Rich, A. R. Ammons, and John Ashbery. Lyric is important in postmodern criticism because it serves as a point of self-definition for both its defenders and its opponents. Yet lyric has itself received little critical attention. This study aims, then, to revise and complicate our received notions about lyric--as expressing pure subjectivity, as autotelic poem--by examining the work of four quite different poets, all of whom have engaged in dialogue with post-Romantic assumptions. My study concerns itself with relations between image and discourse, lyric and the …

Radical Possibilities: Literature In The English Revolution, 1640-1660, Brian Leonard Patton Jan 1993

Radical Possibilities: Literature In The English Revolution, 1640-1660, Brian Leonard Patton

Digitized Theses

This dissertation explores the circulation of radical social and political ideas in the literature of the 1640-1660 Revolution, when England's most fundamental institutions, from the monarchy to the patriarchal family, appeared in danger of annihilation. For students of literature, the period is so rich that its relative neglect seems remarkable. A lapse in government control over the nation's printing presses resulted in a veritable explosion of books, pamphlets and broadsides, and a literature that offers an unprecedented diversity of views and voices. Surveying a wide range of texts, from the familiar to the lesser-known, my study draws upon insights gleaned …

The Development Of Microbicides: A New Method Of Hiv Prevention For Women, Christopher J. Elias, Lori L. Heise Jan 1993

The Development Of Microbicides: A New Method Of Hiv Prevention For Women, Christopher J. Elias, Lori L. Heise

HIV and AIDS

A critical review of current epidemiological trends and social science research demonstrates that there is an urgent need for expanding the range of female-controlled HIV prevention methods. Existing efforts to control the spread of HIV infection primarily through the encouragement of a reduction in the number of sexual partners, widespread condom promotion, and the control of other sexually transmitted infections are inadequate for many of the world's women. Underlying gender power inequities severely limit the ability of many women to protect themselves from HIV infection, especially in the absence of a prevention technology they can use, when necessary, without their …

Community-Based Aids Prevention And Care In Africa: Workshop Report, Andrea Eschen Jan 1993

Community-Based Aids Prevention And Care In Africa: Workshop Report, Andrea Eschen

HIV and AIDS

Representatives from community-based AIDS prevention and care programs in five sub-Saharan African countries spoke about their programs’ strengths, shortcomings, and hopes for the future at a meeting organized by the Population Council that took place on June 5, 1993, in Berlin just prior to the IXth International Conference on AIDS. Participants’ experiences and insights demonstrated the ingenuity and imagination that communities have generated to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS and how they have taken action where government activities have fallen short. The workshop brought representatives of these programs together with staff of governmental and nongovernmental organizations, funding institutions, …
