Combined Heating And Power: Control Documentation And Efficiency Measurement, Daniel Bebbington
Combined Heating And Power: Control Documentation And Efficiency Measurement, Daniel Bebbington
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The University of Plymouth has an experimental Combined Heating and Power (CHP) plant with a poorly documented bespoke space heating loop (SHL), which has led to the existence of some controls with unknown purposes. This research seeks to produce complete documentation for the CHP through experimental methods. This includes taking visual inspections, Thermocouple (TC) temperature measurements, Transit Time Ultrasonic Flow Meter (TTUF) volumetric flow measurements, and Electronic Control Unit (ECL) temperature measurements. The overall thermal efficiency (ηth) measurement methodology will then be assessed as to whether or not it is a suitable protocol for compliance to EU Boiler Efficiency Directive …

ASEE North Midwest Section Annual Conference 2020 Publications
Background: Project management and other professional skill training is often lacking in graduate student education, typically as a result of limited resources, lack of faculty buy-in, and narrow focus on thesis research. To address this need and with support from NSF, we are developing the Graduates for Advancing Professional Skills (GAPS) program at Iowa State University. To aid the initial development of this program, we conducted a literature review to understand the current context of the development and implementation of professional skills in higher education curricula, with specific interest in STEM fields.
Purpose: The purpose of our study was …

Some Topics Involving Derived Categories Over Noetherian Formal Schemes., Saurabh Singh Dr.
Doctoral Theses
There are two parts to this thesis and both the parts involve working with derived categories over noetherian formal schemes. Beyond this there is no overlap between them and we discuss them separately. The first part concerns Grothendieck duality on noetherian formal schemes.Grothendieck duality is a vast generalisation of Serreduality in algebraic geometry. The main statements in this theory are expressed in the language of derived categories. We begin with an important special case.Let f : X → Y be a proper map of noetherian schemes which is smooth of relative dimension n. For any G ∈ D+ qc(Y ) (where …

Protein Co-Assembly And Its Application In Enzyme Engineering, Libo Zhang
Protein Co-Assembly And Its Application In Enzyme Engineering, Libo Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Enzymes, as highly efficient biocatalysts, have been researched extensively in both academia and industry because of their distinct advantages including high substrate specificity, high regio- and stereoselectivity, environmentally benign process, etc. Though enzyme catalysis has been scaled up for commercial processes in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage and detergent industries, technical barriers associated with enzyme implementation persist, i.e., low catalytic efficiency at non-natural environment, exhausting product separations, high cost of certain enzymes, etc. Moreover, currently most industrial enzymes are used in single-step reactions; however, multistep and multienzyme catalysis with optimal efficiency could greatly expand its potential for synthetic applications to …
Student Responses To Active Learning Strategies: A Comparison Between Project-Based And Traditional Engineering Programs, Elizabeth Pluskwik, Yuezhou Wang
Student Responses To Active Learning Strategies: A Comparison Between Project-Based And Traditional Engineering Programs, Elizabeth Pluskwik, Yuezhou Wang
Integrated Engineering Department Publications
Prior research has shown that active learning strategies in engineering education improve student learning, motivation, and retention in STEM disciplines. Yet, instructors are often hesitant to use active learning and other non-lecture strategies due to challenges from students who are resistant to engaging in these methods. Prior research has suggested strategies that can be used to mitigate student resistance to active learning, yet many faculty members have not yet implemented active learning into their engineering education courses. The global demand for entrepreneurially-minded engineers and the rapid growth of engineering programs embracing this mindset increases the need for actionable resources and …

Observing The Impact Of An Engineering-Based Unit Of Instruction On 6th Grade Students' Attitudes Towards Engineering As Theyengage In Building Electric Bikes, Gregg Allred Olsen
Theses and Dissertations
In the past few decades, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education has become a driving force for innovators throughout the world (Atkinson & Mayo, 2010; Bybee, 2010). STEM education has also become an economic factor in developing countries (Kennedy & Odell, 2014). Currently, many countries are struggling with how to effectively promote STEM education. The United States (U.S.) provides an interesting case study. Despite being one of the global economic leaders, it is behind in STEM education compared to other nations (Atkinson & Mayo, 2010; Dugger, 2010). STEM education helps to build world leaders including marketable and knowledgeable employees …

Robotic Exoskeleton For Neuromuscular Rehabilitation And Exercise (4th Generation), Nicole E. Hoffmann, Andrew Elsten, Aletta Johnson, Moises Reynoso Jr.
Honors Capstones
With an aging population comes an increased need for advanced rehabilitation. Modern technological advances in the field of robotics are paving the way for high-tech yet cost-efficient biomedical devices. Exoskeletons allow for the rehabilitation of the neuropathways as well as an increased ability in motor function. The fourth-generation design of the robotic exoskeleton for neuromuscular rehabilitation and exercise is the embodiment of this idea. Using the information provided by the three previous generations, as well as the understanding granted from studying other designs and patents, an easy-to-use and sustainable rehabilitation device comes to fruition.
Promoting The Sustainable Utilization Of Groundwater Resources In Ethiopia Using The Integrated Groundwater Footprint Index, Xinyu Lin
Honors Scholar Theses
The country of Ethiopia is highly vulnerable to human-caused climate change and is already suffering from the effects. The predominately rural population relies heavily on small-scale agriculture, with 78% of households having at least one member engaged in the field, yet staple crops are highly susceptible to droughts and other weather shocks. Total and agricultural GDP growth in the country have been strongly linked to inter-annual rainfall variability, of which Ethiopia has among the highest in sub-Saharan Africa. A decrease in rainfall since the 1970s has been one of the primary causes of low crop yields, and stresses the immediate …

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The design work performed in this project was conducted over two summers (2018, 2019) of internship experience with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) across the state of Montana. The first summer’s design work was based out of Glendive, MT, in Dawson County, approximately 50 kilometers from the North Dakota border. The second summer was in Missoula, MT, in Missoula County, near the Idaho border. The two areas differ significantly in topography, weather, and water availability with the main separating geographic influence being the Rocky Mountains.
This paper focuses on the design process and requirements for two farms located outside …
An Assessment Of Renewable Energy Technology Implementation In Storrs, Connecticut: Emissions Reduction And Feasibility Of A Microgrid System At Uconn, Sophie Macdonald
An Assessment Of Renewable Energy Technology Implementation In Storrs, Connecticut: Emissions Reduction And Feasibility Of A Microgrid System At Uconn, Sophie Macdonald
Honors Scholar Theses
The purpose of this project is to design a clean energy-sourced microgrid for UConn’s main campus that would reduce the university’s energy emissions while remaining within the geographic boundaries of viable UConn-owned land. Economic cost was not considered in this analysis; instead, emissions and space constraints were the optimized measures of value and feasibility. Sources of energy that were considered include photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines, hydrokinetic systems, and fuel cells. Energy storage capacity was included in the analysis as well. The overall system was optimized first by ignoring space constraints and for a minimum of 10% reduction from the current …
Outcome Expectations And Environmental Factors Associated With Engineering College-Going: A Case Study, Holly Matusovich, Andrew Gillen, Cheryl Carrico, David Knight, Jake Grohs
Outcome Expectations And Environmental Factors Associated With Engineering College-Going: A Case Study, Holly Matusovich, Andrew Gillen, Cheryl Carrico, David Knight, Jake Grohs
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Family, school, and community contexts each link to secondary school enrollment, yet these factors have been comparatively examined only in limited ways. A holistic examination of contextual factors will be particularly important for engineering where college enrollment patterns vary by demographics. To begin explaining patterns of engineering college-going at different high schools across the Commonwealth of Virginia, we answered the following research questions: Within a single school system and from a socializer’s perspective, what outcome expectations and environmental factors influence students’ engineering-related postsecondary educational plans? How are these factors the same and different between high schools within a school district? …

Subsurface Analytics: Contribution Of Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning To Reservoir Engineering, Reservoir Modeling, And Reservoir Management, Shahab D. Mohaghegh
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Subsurface Analytics is a new technology that changes the way reservoir simulation and modeling is performed. Instead of starting with the construction of mathematical equations to model the physics of the fluid flow through porous media and then modification of the geological models in order to achieve history match, Subsurface Analytics that is a completely AI-based reservoir simulation and modeling technology takes a completely different approach. In AI-based reservoir modeling, field measurements form the foundation of the reservoir model. Using data-driven, pattern recognition technologies; the physics of the fluid flow through porous media is modeled through discovering the best, most …
Academic Honesty, Professional Integrity, And Undergraduate Engineering Students: Exploring The Connections, S. Amy Skyles, Jeffrey W. Jennings
Academic Honesty, Professional Integrity, And Undergraduate Engineering Students: Exploring The Connections, S. Amy Skyles, Jeffrey W. Jennings
Dissertations
One benefit of inculcating professionalism into engineering degree program curricula is a measure of the extent to which future practitioners adopt an engineering code of ethics (Abaté, 2011; Davis, 2006). Studies have indicated more dishonesty among engineering students than other groups of undergraduate learners, but the effects of technology on dishonesty in the classroom was not addressed (Bowers, 1964; McCabe et al., 2012). An explanatory, sequential mixed methods study was designed to explain to what degree course pedagogical practices and attitudes of civil, architectural and environmental engineering students of various academic levels (freshman/sophomore and senior) relate to academic dishonesty. The …
