Frequency Response Analysis Of Distillation Column Interaction., Chien Wang Jan 1981

Frequency Response Analysis Of Distillation Column Interaction., Chien Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A dynamic pressure model of multicomponent distillation is developed in the frequency domain. The model consists of a set of linearized overall and component balances, enthalpy balance, pressure relationship, hydraulic equation and equilibrium relationships for each tray, the condenser and the reboiler of a general column. A numerical method consisting of total scaled pivoting Gaussian elimination with the method of residues is worked out for solving the model in the frequency domain to obtain all of the desired transfer functions. The resulting transfer functions are presented as Bode plots. The measure of interaction between the various control loops can then …

Diffusion Controlled Vinyl Polymerization, Sung Kuk Soh Jan 1981

Diffusion Controlled Vinyl Polymerization, Sung Kuk Soh

Doctoral Dissertations

It is well known that the polymerization rate and the molecular weight distribution of vinyl polymers can change markedly during the course of polymerization and that these changes are due to the influence of self-diffusion upon the termination reaction. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as the gel effect and in order to explain the polymerization behavior after the onset of the gel effect, the chain length dependence of the termination reaction should be considered.

A new method of handling polymerization kinetics with the chain length dependence termination reaction is proposed, which is largely independent of the form of the …

Special Applications Of Irreversible Thermodynamics, Yakov Michael Zilberberg Jan 1981

Special Applications Of Irreversible Thermodynamics, Yakov Michael Zilberberg

Doctoral Dissertations

Thermodynamic analysis of various physical phenomena, chemical processes, and industrial installation has become a very important part of engineering work. The evergrowing sophistication of the contemporary technical world has brought about the necessity of extensive developments and applications in the field of Irreversible Thermodynamics which enables one to efficiently treat phenomena that are spatially and temporally non-equilibrium ones, and therefore thermodynamically irreversible. The unavoidable facts that all industrial processes experience randomly distributed external and internal excitations, and also that their variables, being automatically controlled, fluctuate in space in time, require a systematic improvements of the adopted methods of Irreversible Thermodynamic …

Water Quality Impact Of Non-Point Source Contaminants In Small Tidal Rivers, Edward John Schmidt Jan 1981

Water Quality Impact Of Non-Point Source Contaminants In Small Tidal Rivers, Edward John Schmidt

Doctoral Dissertations

An integrated numerical modeling methodology was developed for analysis of non-point contaminant production and water quality impacts in estuarine receiving waters. The methodology was calibrated against contaminant source observations and estuarine data.

Contaminant source loading is based on the runoff curve number technique combined with a partial contributing area approach. Sediment washoff is used as an indicator of contaminant quantities.

Hydrographs and contaminant load time series are introduced into a set of one-dimensional estuary models. Freshwater flow and tidal height are forcing functions for dynamic computation of velocity and water surface profiles. The effect of longitudinal salinity distribution is included …

Use Of Economic Analyses And Dynamic Programming In The Selection Of Projects For Resurfacing, Charles V. Zegeer, Kenneth R. Agent, Rolands L. Rizenbergs Nov 1980

Use Of Economic Analyses And Dynamic Programming In The Selection Of Projects For Resurfacing, Charles V. Zegeer, Kenneth R. Agent, Rolands L. Rizenbergs

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this paper was to develop a dynamic programming procedure using economic analyses to assist in optimizing expenditures in pavement resurfacing programs. Benefit relationships were determined from expected accident reduction, improved comfort, time saving, fuel savings, and maintenance savings. The only cost input to the program was the resurfacing cost of each project.

Dynamic programming was adapted to the selection of projects for resurfacing in Kentucky. Over $8.4 million of additional user benefits would have been realized in 1976 if dynamic programming had been used in selecting projects. The benefit-cost ratio of sections selected for resurfacing by the …

A New Experiential Course In Engineering Management, Donald S. Remer Jan 1980

A New Experiential Course In Engineering Management, Donald S. Remer

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Institutions with undergraduate programs of the engineering management type often find their introductory courses to be popular electives for students in more traditional engineering disciplines, while in other cases specific courses from business management or industrial engineering departments are elected. Where none of these options are available or suitable, engineering schools are well advised to provide one or two key courses to provide at least an introduction to the management problems their graduates will face. At Brown University, according to Prof. Barrett Hazeltine, a series of two courses in engineering management serve this function; more than half of Brown's undergraduate …

Effect Of Capillary Diameter On The Rate Of Radiation Induced Polymerization Of Acrylamide In Saline Solutions Containing Dissolved Phosphorus-32., Satyajit Verma Jan 1980

Effect Of Capillary Diameter On The Rate Of Radiation Induced Polymerization Of Acrylamide In Saline Solutions Containing Dissolved Phosphorus-32., Satyajit Verma

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Radiation induced solution polymerization of acrylamide was studied at 80(DEGREES)C in tubes with diameters of 6, 2.29, 0.89 and 0.38 mm. The tubes were filled with aqueous solutions of 3% acrylamide, 10% NaCl and sufficient neutralized orthophosphoric acid to produce a specific radioactivity of 1 mCi/ml. of dissolved ('32)P. Distinctly higher initial rates of increase of solution viscosity were observed with increasing tube diameter. Kinetic studies were done also with 3% acrylamide in 0, 5 and 10% salt solutions at 81.5(DEGREES)C and 28(DEGREES)C; the reaction induced by external irradiation from ('60)Co. Other systems studied were 1 and 1.5% acrylamide in …

The Conversion Of Manganese (Ii) Oxide To Manganese (Ii) Sulfide: Effect Of Variable Solid Properties. (Volumes I And Ii)., David Anthony Caillet Jan 1980

The Conversion Of Manganese (Ii) Oxide To Manganese (Ii) Sulfide: Effect Of Variable Solid Properties. (Volumes I And Ii)., David Anthony Caillet

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study of the effect of variable solid properties on the kinetics of the reaction of spherical manganous oxide pellets with hydrogen sulfide gas was performed. This study resulted in a major modification of the grain model to allow for radial solid property variations due to reaction and/or sintering. It was shown that this new model did the original constant property grain model. A complete experimental study was made of the effects of exposure to high temperatures (sintering) and the effects of the reaction itself on the structural properties, notably the specific surface area and porosity, of the solid reactant …

The Biomechanics Of The Carpometacarpal Joint Of The Thumb., Chinjen A. Ou Jan 1979

The Biomechanics Of The Carpometacarpal Joint Of The Thumb., Chinjen A. Ou

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Data collected from six left forearms of fresh human cadavers were used to deduce the functional behavior of the muscle-tendon units acting upon the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint of the thumb. The data supplied direct information regarding tendon excursions and was used to derive moment arms of each tendon over the normal range of thumb motion. Preparation of the cadaver hands included replacement of the eight muscle-tendons crossing the joint with surgical steel suture material and immobilization of the interphalangeal joint and the metacarpophalangeal joint by insertion of a Kirschner-wire (K-wire) through the intrameduallary canal of the phalanges of the thumb. …

Analysis And Simulation Of Stepping Motor Systems Using A Phase Plane Approach, Raymond Gerard Gauthier Jan 1979

Analysis And Simulation Of Stepping Motor Systems Using A Phase Plane Approach, Raymond Gerard Gauthier

Doctoral Dissertations

Stepping motors have become an increasingly popular electromechanical interface device, due to their increased reliability and lower costs over the D.C. Servo motor. The inherent open loop mode of stepping motor operation results, under certain circumstances, in a failure mode in which the output of the stepper no longer follows the input commands. In the past, it has been difficult for the designer to define the failure modes and it has not been obvious how to avoid them.

It is the intent of this dissertation to present a mathematical model for a class of stepping motors, the permanent magnet stepping …

Simulation Of Travel Patterns For Small Urban Areas, Jerry G. Pigman, Robert C. Deen Oct 1978

Simulation Of Travel Patterns For Small Urban Areas, Jerry G. Pigman, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this study was to develop models which would simulate internal-external trips and external-external (through) trips. Regression analysis and cross-classification of data were tested in an attempt to predict the number of internal-external trips and the percentage of through trips. Regression analysis was used in the development of a through-trip distribution model. Grouping data for analysis created some problems; however, trial-and-error evaluation enabled selection of variables which produced reasonable results. Variables found to be most significant in the development of internal-external models were population and employment. For through-trip models, variables used were population, functional classification, AADT at the …

Analysis Of Time-Independent Consolidation Data, E. Gregory Mcnulty, Tommy C. Hopkins, C. Thomas Gorman Jan 1978

Analysis Of Time-Independent Consolidation Data, E. Gregory Mcnulty, Tommy C. Hopkins, C. Thomas Gorman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The one-dimensional laboratory consolidation test developed by Terzaghi permits deformation and drainage only in the vertical direction. The stress-strain characteristics of data obtained from this test are normally studied using a semilogarithmic graphical representation, that is, vertical strain or void ratio is plotted as a function of the logarithm of effective stress. Such a representation permits an analysis of the stress history and compressibility characteristics of soils. Knowledge of these material characteristics is of great practical value in the prediction of settlement associated with loading where the effects of lateral consolidation may be neglected.

The Application Of Limit Analysis To Shell Structures Using Existing Finite Element Analysis Codes, George G. Myers Jan 1977

The Application Of Limit Analysis To Shell Structures Using Existing Finite Element Analysis Codes, George G. Myers

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A ramjet inlet duct structure has been designed using nonlinear structural analysis to allow local plastic deformations which result in structural weight reduction. To establish the feasibility of reduced shell thickness, the Lower-Bound Theorem of limit analysis has been applied using an existing finite element analysis computer code intended for elastic analysis. The results of the analysis were verified by structural testing. Predicted stresses and deflections showed good correlation with measured values up to the point of failure. This work was supported by the U.S. Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, under Contract No. F33615-72-C-1366.

Kentucky Research: A Flexible Pavement Design And Management System, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens, William B. Drake Aug 1976

Kentucky Research: A Flexible Pavement Design And Management System, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens, William B. Drake

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Various strategies for designing pavement structures are discussed. Initial full-life design, stage designs and planned extensions of service life, final design, surface renewals for deslicking, no-defect designs for high-type high-volume facilities, and allowable-defect designs are considered. Economics enter in terms of salvage value of existing pavements and alternate designs using different proportions of materials within the structure.

The elastic model represented in Chevron's n-layered computer program is the basis for theoretical relationships. Ranges of values are given for input variables such as Young's moduli, Poisson's ratio, thicknesses for layers, tire pressure, and load. The Kentucky CBR is related to modulus …
