Mechanism Of Sps Acceleration In A Peg Containing Copper Plating Bath, Ashleigh Kreider Jan 2012

Mechanism Of Sps Acceleration In A Peg Containing Copper Plating Bath, Ashleigh Kreider

Doctoral Dissertations

Deposition of copper in Through Silicon Vias (TSVs) is achieved by addition of organic compounds, which act as suppressors and accelerants to copper electroplating solutions. The focus of this study is on the acceleration effect of bis-(3-sodiumsulfopropyl) disulfide (SPS) which is believed to go through an electrochemical reaction to form sodium 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate (MPS), the effective accelerant. The accelerant is believed to operate by forcing the suppressor off the copper surface through competitive adsorption. The kinetics of MPS adsorption onto copper was studied by addition of MPS to solutions containing the suppressor molecule, polyethylene glycol (PEG), under constant overpotential and measurement …

Liquefaction And Ring Shear Device, Julian A. Sandoval Jan 2012

Liquefaction And Ring Shear Device, Julian A. Sandoval

Doctoral Dissertations

Liquefaction flow slides triggered by earthquakes or heavy rainfall in saturated granular soils have produced great damage in landslide-prone areas worldwide. A major aspect that needs more study is how the 'residual strength' remaining in the liquefied material evolves at the high strain levels imposed as the slide progresses. Strength of liquefied granular soils is usually studied in the lab by means of the triaxial test, since the strains required to trigger liquefaction are low, compared with those observed after it has been produced. More sophisticated devices are necessary in order to apply the high strains and shear strain rates …

Morphological Study Of Composite Latex Particles And Water Interaction With Polymer Chains, Bo Jiang Jan 2012

Morphological Study Of Composite Latex Particles And Water Interaction With Polymer Chains, Bo Jiang

Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this research was the morphological study of composite polymer (2 or more) nano-particles in an aqueous dispersed system. This included synthesis, characterization and mathematical/numerical modeling. For a composite latex particle, the morphology can play an important role in determining the final application properties, and the structure depends on many factors which are active during and after polymerization. Among these are the penetration of oligomeric chains into the latex particles, mixing of the two composite polymers, and eventual phase separation of such mixtures. These actions depend upon the materials used in the polymerization and the process by …

Cross-Correlation Based Performance Measures For Characterizing The Influence Of In-Vehicle Interfaces On Driving And Cognitive Workload, Zeljko Medenica Jan 2012

Cross-Correlation Based Performance Measures For Characterizing The Influence Of In-Vehicle Interfaces On Driving And Cognitive Workload, Zeljko Medenica

Doctoral Dissertations

Driving is a cognitively loading task which requires drivers' full attention and coordination of both mind and body. However, drivers often engage in side activities which can negatively impact safety. A typical approach for analyzing the influences of side activities on driving is to conduct experiments in which various driving performance measures are collected, such as steering wheel angle and lane position. Those measures are then transformed, typically using means and variances, before being analyzed statistically. However, the problem is that those transformations perform averaging of the acquired data, which can result in missing short, but important events (such as …

Identification Of System Parameters For End Milling Force Simulation With Tool And Workpiece Compliance, Min Hyong Koh Jan 2012

Identification Of System Parameters For End Milling Force Simulation With Tool And Workpiece Compliance, Min Hyong Koh

Master's Theses and Capstones

A Smart Machining System being developed at UNH has the potential to produce high quality machined parts in minimum time. Integral to the success of this system is the ability to accurately simulate cutting forces. In this current work, a time-domain milling simulation is developed with a tool-workpiece compliance model to predict dynamic cutting forces. The simulation computes milling forces, tool deflections, and workpiece vibration (surface waviness).

The accuracy of the simulation depends on finding reliable system parameters. In this work, an end milling parameter identification method is developed using linear predictive coding (LPC) and Extended Kalman Filtering. The milling …

Two-Dimensional Unsteady Flow Visualization By Animating Evenly-Spaced Streamlets, Zhengang Hong Jan 2012

Two-Dimensional Unsteady Flow Visualization By Animating Evenly-Spaced Streamlets, Zhengang Hong

Master's Theses and Capstones

Flow visualization has been widely used to display and discover patterns and features in vector fields. Common applications include the representation of ocean currents and weather model data.

In this thesis, a flexible method for animating vector fields is developed, based on a generalization of a Poisson disc sampling method. The algorithm has two stages; in the first streamlets are drawn into an image buffer, larger than their intended size. Before they are drawn they are tested to see if they impact on already drawn areas; if they do, they are rejected. In the second stage the ones that pass …
