College Success: An Exploratory Study Of How Underrepresented Minority Students Enter And Persist In Stem Programs, Eleanor Andrews
College Success: An Exploratory Study Of How Underrepresented Minority Students Enter And Persist In Stem Programs, Eleanor Andrews
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Without the proper academic preparation and cultural capital, underrepresented minority students may not find their path to pursuing science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) degrees. To gain a better understanding of how underrepresented minority students experienced college success, this study examined how they entered a STEM program of study and persisted in the program beyond their first year at the university. Three important contexts presented the greatest barriers to persistence: low socioeconomic status, first generation status, and under-preparation in math. Participants within these contexts were enabled to find a path to attend college and persist with targeted support and advice …
Updates To A Sequence Of Thermodynamics Experiments For Mechanical Engineering Technology Students, Roger A. Beardsley
Updates To A Sequence Of Thermodynamics Experiments For Mechanical Engineering Technology Students, Roger A. Beardsley
All Faculty Scholarship for the School of Graduate Studies and Research
This paper presents an outline of thermodynamics experiments and lab activities that accompany the introductory thermodynamics course for Mechanical Engineering Technology juniors at Central Washington University (CWU) in Ellensburg, Washington. It outlines and describes the current suite of thermodynamics lab activities, comparing the current suite of seven lab activities to a sequence outlined in an ASEE conference paper presented in 1995. Some lab activities in that paper have been replaced, while others have been updated. For example an experiment to measure the Joule-Thomson coefficient has been replaced with a First Law energy balance activity and the former First Law experiment …

Honors College Theses
This research paper focuses on the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Literacy in American Education. Specifically, the research paper focuses on different strategies that can be used to incorporate literacy into the science and math classrooms. There are five different strategies presented for each content area and they were all suggested by a variety of Educational Journals. Along with literacy strategies, there is another part of the research paper that focuses on the importance of innovative experiences in the science and math classrooms that incorporate principles of engineering and technology. The importance of this is not only to …
An Affine Invariant Signed-Rank Multivariate Exponentially Weighted Moving Average Control Chart For Process Location Monitoring, Jamil H. Zeinab
An Affine Invariant Signed-Rank Multivariate Exponentially Weighted Moving Average Control Chart For Process Location Monitoring, Jamil H. Zeinab
Dissertations
Multivariate statistical process control (SPC) charts for detecting possible shifts in mean vectors assume that data observation vectors follow a multivariate normal distribution. This assumption is ideal and seldom met. Nonparametric SPC charts have increasingly become viable alternatives to parametric counterparts in detecting process shifts when the underlying process output distribution is unknown, specifically when the process measurement is multivariate. This study examined a new nonparametric signed-rank multivariate exponentially weighted moving average type (SRMEWMA) control chart for monitoring location parameters. The control chart was based on adapting a multivariate spatial signed-rank test. The test was affine-invariant and the weighted version …

Ingenuity In Action: Connecting Tinkering To Engineering Design Processes, Jennifer Wang, Maia Werner-Avidon, Lisa Newton, Scott Randol, Brooke Smith, Gretchen Walker
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
The Lawrence Hall of Science, a science center, seeks to replicate real-world engineering at the Ingenuity in Action exhibit, which consists of three open-ended challenges. These problems encourage children to engage in engineering design processes and problem-solving techniques through tinkering. We observed and interviewed 112 visitor groups at the exhibit to understand how children engage in engineering behaviors extracted from the steps of a design process and to what extent they are aware of these processes. We found that all but one group exhibited engineering behaviors, and facilitation and collaboration positively correlated with engineering behaviors. The Ingenuity in Action exhibit …
What Can Stem Educators Learn From A Teacher Induction Program? A Study Of Science And Mathematics Teachers’ Reflections On Teaching And Learning, Sheryl Mcglamery, Saundra Shillingstad
What Can Stem Educators Learn From A Teacher Induction Program? A Study Of Science And Mathematics Teachers’ Reflections On Teaching And Learning, Sheryl Mcglamery, Saundra Shillingstad
Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Research completed to date confirms that beginning science and mathematics teachers face many challenges, and must master numerous areas of teaching skill in order to demonstrate competence in teaching. Most will face the initial year of practice with little or no access to an induction program targeting their content areas (Luft, 2009). Research further suggests that science and math teachers left without critically needed guidance, a comprehensive induction program could provide, often develop practices that do not allow their students to participate in inquiry activities (e.g. labs, simulations, problem solving, research projects ( Luft, Roehrig, & Patterson, 2003). Instead the …

Towards A “Cloud Curriculum” In Art And Science?, Roger Malina
Towards A “Cloud Curriculum” In Art And Science?, Roger Malina
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
Recently an email hit my desk from Paul Thomas in Australia with a proposal to work together on a “Cloud Curriculum for Art and Science”. I immediately agreed to collaborate. I don’t yet have a clue of what a cloud curriculum is, but what I do know is that we are ‘backing into the future’ in educational institutions and we desperately need a ‘cloud curriculum.’ We need to look over the ten year horizon. And in the emerging art-science field I doubt that the usual approach to curriculum development will work.
Getting Real About The E In Steam, James Catterall
Getting Real About The E In Steam, James Catterall
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
STEM and STEAM are in the news. Researchers and educators in my field (cognition, art, and creativity) argue reasons for adding the A to STEM. While I visit this below, my focus is elsewhere. In this brief essay, I want to explore the meaning and importance of the E appearing in both STEM and STEAM. What’s engineering doing in this mix? And what are some reasons for affirming the arts when the role of engineering is clarified?
The Impact Of The Kalamazoo Promise On College Choice: An Analysis Of Kalamazoo Area Math And Science Center Graduates, Michelle Miller-Adams, Bridget Timmeney
The Impact Of The Kalamazoo Promise On College Choice: An Analysis Of Kalamazoo Area Math And Science Center Graduates, Michelle Miller-Adams, Bridget Timmeney
Upjohn Institute Policy Papers
The Kalamazoo Promise has led to a pronounced shift in the college-going patterns of Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) students who attend the Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center (KAMSC). Following the introduction of the Kalamazoo Promise in 2005, the percentage of KPS KAMSC students attending public, in-state institutions of higher education has almost doubled—a shift that reflects the program rules of the Promise, which covers tuition and fees only at public postsecondary institutions in Michigan. The percentage of non-KPS KAMSC students attending an in-state, public institution also rose in the post-2006 period but only very slightly, suggesting that the Promise …
Teaching Technical Engineering Courses From A Christian Perspective: Two Examples, Charles C. Adams
Teaching Technical Engineering Courses From A Christian Perspective: Two Examples, Charles C. Adams
Pro Rege
Engineering professors, like those of the natural sciences, usually teach by breaking the subject matter into parts, that is, courses and activities that are logically abstract from each other. While together comprising a coherent whole, those individual parts too easily foster abstractionism, the view that such subjects as calculus, fluid mechanics, engineering design, and engineering ethics “really are” separable from one another. Such a view militates against a Christian perspective of engineering, technology, and reality in general by replacing the organic wholeness of life before the face of God with the compartmentalization that is characteristic of modern science and naturalism. …

Transcranial Electrical Stimulation Accelerates Human Sleep Homeostasis, Davide Reato, Fernando Gasca, Abhishek Datta, Marom Bikson, Lisa Marshall, Lucas C. Parra
Publications and Research
The sleeping brain exhibits characteristic slow-wave activity which decays over the course of the night. This decay is thought to result from homeostatic synaptic downscaling. Transcranial electrical stimulation can entrain slow-wave oscillations (SWO) in the human electro-encephalogram (EEG). A computational model of the underlying mechanism predicts that firing rates are predominantly increased during stimulation. Assuming that synaptic homeostasis is driven by average firing rates, we expected an acceleration of synaptic downscaling during stimulation, which is compensated by a reduced drive after stimulation. We show that 25 minutes of transcranial electrical stimulation, as predicted, reduced the decay of SWO in the …

Application Of Scanning Hall Probe Microscopy For High Throughput Characterization Of Combinatorial Magnetic Materials, Girfan Shamsutdinov
Application Of Scanning Hall Probe Microscopy For High Throughput Characterization Of Combinatorial Magnetic Materials, Girfan Shamsutdinov
Wayne State University Dissertations
A Scanning Hall Probe Microscope (SHPM) with a submicron Hall probe (HP) was used for high efficiency characterization of magnetic materials at high magnetic fields. Specifically, we have studied phase diagrams of Co-Fe-Ni binary and ternary alloys, as well as weak itinerant ferromagnet MnSi. The Co-Fe-Ni alloys were fabricated by annealing three metal blocks placed in intimate contact at high temperatures to allow thermal interdiffusion to create solid-solution with a composition spread over the binary and the ternary diffusion regions. The change in the magnetic field in the vicinity of these variable composition diffusion couples and multiples, Fe-Co, Fe-Ni, Co-Ni …
Molecular Self-Assembly Of Functionalized Pentacenes And Fullerenes On Metal Surfaces By Stm And Dft Investigations, Jun Wang
Doctoral Dissertations
Enormous efforts have been made in seeking alternative pathways to more effectively use solar energy. Organic solar cells, composed essentially of carbon-based organic molecular materials, have attracted considerable scientific and industrial attentions because of their economic and environmental benefits. It is advantageous to have the comprehension of the molecular structures and interfacial morphologies for these active molecular materials on substrates in the nanoscale regime.
Controlling the heterostructures of the molecular donor and acceptor materials is essential to overcoming the efficiency bottleneck in organic photovoltaics. Molecular self-assembly on patterned substrates provides a bottom-up approach to create well-controlled molecular heterojunctions and a …
Approaches To Modeling Pathogen And Natural Organic Matter Removals In Slow-Rate Biofilters, Jeffrey Dale Senders
Approaches To Modeling Pathogen And Natural Organic Matter Removals In Slow-Rate Biofilters, Jeffrey Dale Senders
Doctoral Dissertations
There are limited expressions capable of estimating removals in one of the world's oldest and most sustainable water treatment systems: slow-rate biofilters. This research addresses the problem by deriving semi-empirical models that predict pathogen and natural organic matter removals within these natural and engineered sand filters. The more complex pathogen model, or phenomenological colloidal filtration theory (pCFT), applies the 1937 Iwasaki solution to New England pilot scale E. coli observations. The derived pCFT was then calibrated through a series of experimental bench scale phases. Further pCFT validation came by way of a seamless application to multiple microorganisms. Viruses (MS2 as …

Multiscale Numerical Modeling And Characterization Of Carbon/Carbon Composites, Borys Drach
Doctoral Dissertations
Carbon/carbon composite is a high-performance material with a unique set of physical and thermo-mechanical properties making it irreplaceable for severe environment aerospace applications. Its complex hierarchical microstructure presents materials scientists and engineers with substantial modeling challenges when it comes to predicting material's behavior under various loading conditions. My research has been focused on characterization, mutliscale modeling and mechanical testing of this composite. A set of new elasticity solutions for the carbon fiber surrounded by multiple layers of pyrolytic carbon represented as a multicoated cylinder is presented on the microscale. On the mesoscale, deterministic and statistical approaches to evaluation of contributions …

Design And Practical Application Of An Innovative, Pneumatically Latched Valve, Cheng Y. Lin, Jennifer G. Michaeli, Nathan J. Luetke
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
This article explains the design and fabrication of an innovative five-port, two-position (5/2), pneumatically latched valve. The initial application to repeatedly and automatically lift a mechanical cover or gate was presented as part of an undergraduate student project in the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program's Automation and Controls course in the Department of Engineering Technology at Old Dominion University. Valve operation, including self-latching, utilizes mechanical means only. The valve does not require any electrical power, electronic sensors, or controller, which makes it an energy-saving device. For light-duty operation, a bellows foot-air pump is used for air supply. A single activation of …

The Underrespresentation Of Hispanic Women In The Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics Fields: What Can Be Done To Curie The Problem., Elky Almaraz
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
Hispanic women comprise approximately eight percent of the United States’ population and represent the largest group of minority women. However, Hispanic women only make up approximately two percent of the science and engineering workforce. In contrast, Caucasian women form approximately one-third of the United States’ population and eighteen percent of the science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) workforce. Hispanic women begin a post-secondary education in STEM fields with a proportional interest to other gender or racial groups. However, they are far less likely to continue the coursework and ultimately earn a degree than their non-minority classmates. Schools and education officials …
