Physical Activity And Cognitive Function Among Older Adults With An Elevated Gamma Gap, Emily Frith, Paul D. Loprinzi
Physical Activity And Cognitive Function Among Older Adults With An Elevated Gamma Gap, Emily Frith, Paul D. Loprinzi
Faculty and Student Publications
© 2018 The Author(s) Published by S. Karger AG, Basel. Objective: An elevated gamma gap is indicative of high serum concentrations of globulin proteins, some of which elicit acute inflammatory responses. An impaired cognitive function has been linked to central and peripheral inflammation, while exercise is associated with protective, anti-inflammatory benefits. In this study, we evaluated whether the gamma gap is associated with cognitive function among older adults and whether physical activity is favorably associated with cognitive function among those with an elevated gamma gap. Materials and Methods: Data from the 1999-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were …

Assistive Devices For Communication Use With The Elderly, Corrine Koepsell, Antony Joseph
AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders
Hearing loss is one of the prevalent medical conditions in older adults. Although it has been documented that hearing loss is associated with various aspects of social and physical health, hearing assistive technologies and audiologic rehabilitation have been infrequently tapped clinical solutions. Cost and user problems in background noise are two common reasons why hearing aids are underutilized by seniors, and by younger age groups as well. Alternative tools, such as assistive listening devices, may be helpful for older listeners, even though they are used less frequently than hearing aids. To identify if assistive listening devices are satisfactory, a pilot …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Abstract
As the elderly population rapidly grows in the United States, the burden of managing infection in long-term care facilities (LTCF) escalates. The use of evidence-based infection identification algorithms for early recognition and treatment of pneumonia, urinary tract infections (UTI) and skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) was evaluated at a Midwest suburban 110-bed long-term care facility. Focus group sessions were conducted at the facility with four nurse practitioners, the medical director, eight nurses and certified nursing assistants (CNAs) prior to an educational in-service which was provided to all staff at the facility. As criteria of infection were reported, nurses …

Many developed countries are approaching an era of ageing population due to an increase in longevity and decrease in fertility rates. Singapore is no exception, having one of the fastest ageing populations in Asia, which is driven by low fertility rates and the third longest life expectancy in the world. The number of elderly citizens, defined as those aged 65 and above, is expected to triple to 900,000 by 2030, making up about 28% of the total population in Singapore (Population SG, 2016). This changing population age profile, combined with a competitive labour market, means it makes business sense to …

Identifying Elderlies At Risk Of Becoming More Depressed With Internet-Of-Things, Jiajue Ou, Huiguang Liang, Hwee Xian Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Depression in the elderly is common and dangerous. Current methods to monitor elderly depression, however, are costly, time-consuming and inefficient. In this paper, we present a novel depression-monitoring system that infers an elderly’s changes in depression level based on his/her activity patterns, extracted from wireless sensor data. To do so, we build predictive models to learn the relationship between depression level changes and behaviors using historical data. We also deploy the system for a group of elderly, in their homes, and run the experiments for more than one year. Our experimental study gives encouraging results, suggesting that our IoT system …

Our Homes, Our Stores: Aging In Place For Lgbtq Communities In The San Francisco Bay Area, Simon Dean Jarrar
Master's Theses
The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of gentrification on the social networks and communities of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) elderly people living in the San Francisco Bay Area. The expectation was that, due to the rising cost of living, people in elderly LGBTQ communities would be relocating; this would result in the fragmentation of support networks and community spaces. I used a two-part interviewing process. In the first interview, I asked participants to tell me about themselves and their lives, as well as what they consider to be important aspects of their lives in …

Effects Of Long-Term Participation In Tennis On Cognitive Function In Elderly Individuals, Scott Culpin
Effects Of Long-Term Participation In Tennis On Cognitive Function In Elderly Individuals, Scott Culpin
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Many studies have reported the relationship between exercise and cognition with conflicting results. This may be due to differences in intervention durations, session lengths, intensities, and type of exercise. It has been suggested that exercises requiring greater cognitive demand such as football, basketball and racquet sports, are protective against cognitive decline, compared to less cognitively demanding exercises such as swimming, cycling and running, however, research concerning exercise types are currently limited. The present study tested the hypothesis that elderly individuals who had been regularly playing tennis more than 10 years, would have greater cognitive function than those who had been …

Alzheimer’s is a complex disease for which there is no known method for reversing its effects and no known cure for those who develop it. While a large part of the risk for developing AD comes from genes we inherit, there is evidence suggesting that an even greater part of our risk comes from our “environment,” and more specifically, our lifestyle.

The Qualitative Report
In this phenomenological study, we offer an insightful understanding of the lived experiences of seven (7) Filipino elderly participating in craft-making. We purposively selected the key informants from a municipality in the province of Bulacan, Philippines. The transcribed data gathered through a semi-structured in-depth interview was analyzed using Colaizzi’s approach. Six themes describing the lived experiences emerged: “Fostering friendship,” “Flourishing health,” “Furthering service,” “Facing aging with acceptance,” “Finding felicity and self-fulfillment,” “Feelings of belongingness and security.” Just like the sun, the elderly’s participation in craft-making serves as a nourishment for them. This exploration speaks to understanding the potential of craft-making …

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The progressive growth of geriatric facilities as valuable element of the health system signified for increased services from health care workers particularly Registered Nurses (RNs). A major health care concern could be perceived due to the inadequate number of RNs providing care to elderly patients. Most studies centered on insufficiency of RNs in hospital settings while only few focused on geriatric facilities. In response to this gap, my study concentrated on perceptions of Registered Nurses on the demand for more RNs working with elderly patients in geriatric facilities with specialization in geriatric nursing. My study was a qualitative, descriptive, case …

Association Between Age-Related Hearing Loss And Disability In Older Adults: A Systematic Review, Tzu-Chia Lin, Miaofen Yen
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is the loss of hearing or proportional to the degree of hearing impairment that gradually occurs as we grow older. ARHL management also consumes an increasing portion of healthcare expenditures given the rising mean age of people. Previous studies have investigated the association of ARHL and disability in older adults, but the results are inconsistent. However, identifying potentially modifiable risk factors such as hearing loss would provide a substantial public health benefit. Therefore, the aim of the study was to comprehensively evaluate the evidence connecting ARHL to disability in older adults.
Methods: Studies were identified …
