Bringing Van Hiele And Piaget Together: A Case For Topology In Early Mathematics Learning, Whitney George Feb 2017

Bringing Van Hiele And Piaget Together: A Case For Topology In Early Mathematics Learning, Whitney George

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Topological concepts arise naturally in young children's spatial reasoning yet topology is not part of our current K-12 education. In this paper, we extend the van Hiele model of spatial reasoning using Piaget's theory of representational space. By merging these two existing theories, we are able to place topological concepts in a context that is age appropriate.

Harnessing The Power Of Failure In Your Music Classroom: Grit, Growth Mindset, & Greatness, Virginia Davis, Diane C. Persellin

Music Faculty Research

No pain, no gain. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. These and other similar phrases represent attitudes most teachers hope will inspire their students. Surrounded by walls adorned with such inspirational quotes, we music teachers walk a fine line between identifying students’ musical mistakes and encouraging them to keep trying. We may wonder during this process why some students seem to crumble under criticism while others never quit, despite constant difficulty. What can we do to encourage students to learn from their mistakes? What roles do talent and hard …

The Influence Of Height On Academic Outcomes, Devon Haskell Gorry Feb 2017

The Influence Of Height On Academic Outcomes, Devon Haskell Gorry

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

This paper examines whether the height premium for academic outcomes is driven by unequal opportunities for tall individuals. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health, this paper shows that taller individuals typically earn higher grades and attain more schooling, but the associations are not uniform across school size. Height is only associated with better outcomes for students attending large schools and these improvements are concentrated among males. Data suggest that height contributes more to sports participation and school satisfaction in large schools where resources are more scarce. Thus, differential opportunities or treatment across height in large schools …

All professions have their jargon. But astronomy goes the extra parsec. Here’s an example. Vega, one of the brighter stars in the night sky, has an apparent magnitude (i.e., an apparent brightness) of approximately zero. Polaris, the North Star, has an apparent magnitude of about +2. Despite this, Vega appears brighter than Polaris, and not by two, but by a factor of about six times.

The Impact Of A Professional Development Initiative On Technology Integration Within Instruction, Angela M. Daigle Feb 2017

The Impact Of A Professional Development Initiative On Technology Integration Within Instruction, Angela M. Daigle

Student Work

The purpose of professional development is to give teachers the skills and dispositions that they need to increase student achievement. There are many programs and initiatives that school districts can follow, but do they actually work. This is the question that school districts have to be asking themselves in order to determine if the professional development is worth the investment. Does the training that we give our teachers make a difference in what they do every day with students? This research seeks to answer the question ”Did the professional development initiative developed and implemented by this Midwestern suburban school district …

The Technocratic Politics Of The Common Core State Standards In History, Kate Duguid Feb 2017

The Technocratic Politics Of The Common Core State Standards In History, Kate Duguid

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This paper shows that the explicit aims of the American educational standards for public schools, the Common Core State Standards to teach history to create “college and career ready” students, marks a shift from preparing students for political participation to preparing them for market participation. I trace the intellectual and pedagogical origins of the Common Core’s pretense of technocratic apolitical values back through the previous two major American curricular reform efforts. In the first section I discuss the origins and development of the National History Standards and show how Cold War anxiety prompted a shift in evaluating students as potential …

The Impact Of Education On Political Ideology: Evidence From European Compulsory Education Reforms, Andrew G. Meyer Feb 2017

The Impact Of Education On Political Ideology: Evidence From European Compulsory Education Reforms, Andrew G. Meyer

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Previous research documents a correlation between education and political ideology, usually indicating a positive relationship between education and left-wing political views. In this paper, I examine to what extent this association is causal. I merge political ideology data from 25 waves of Eurobarometer surveys with information on 18 educational reforms in 11 European countries. I then instrument for educational attainment with a regression discontinuity design that estimates the increase in education due to compulsory educational reforms. Notably, it appears that omitted variables bias is important here. I find a significant causal effect of education moving individuals to the right when …

School Management And Educational Quality In The Context Of Centralized Educational Governance In Egypt: Examining Stakeholder Perceptions In Private Language Schools, Ola Elrashidy Feb 2017

School Management And Educational Quality In The Context Of Centralized Educational Governance In Egypt: Examining Stakeholder Perceptions In Private Language Schools, Ola Elrashidy

Theses and Dissertations

The decline in educational quality is a worldwide phenomenon that has caused stakeholders to challenge the structure of current systems of centralized governance. It is argued that decentralization of educational governance that would allow more autonomy and increased decision-making authority at the school level, which would ultimately result in improved educational quality. Private language schools in Egypt should have a degree of autonomy to make decisions that would enable them to provide a higher quality education, within a regulatory framework that supports rather than hinders their progress. In reality, these schools are constrained by the central control of curricula, assessment, …

Exploration Of A Confidence-Based Assessment Tool Within An Aviation Training Program, Paul F. Novacek Jan 2017

Exploration Of A Confidence-Based Assessment Tool Within An Aviation Training Program, Paul F. Novacek

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Traditional use of multiple-choice questions reward a student for guessing. This technique encourages rote memorization of questions to pass a lengthy exam, and does not promote comprehensive understanding or subject correlation. In an effort to identify guessing on answers during an exam within a safety-critical aviation pilot training course, a qualitative research study was undertaken that introduced a confidence-based element to the end-of-ground-school exam. Confidence-based assessments consist of students’ self-reported level of certainty in their responses, indicating which answers they believe are correct while also indicating how confident they feel with their selections. The research goals were to clearly identify …

Do Education And Personal Relationships Reduce The Stigma Of Those Labelled?, Jessica Rose Johnson Jan 2017

Do Education And Personal Relationships Reduce The Stigma Of Those Labelled?, Jessica Rose Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Labels exist within society for many reasons. Labels exist within school systems to benefit students by providing them with the best possible education. This includes providing accommodations when appropriate and guaranteeing the least-restrictive environment for them to grow and succeed. While labels are designed to help students, they sometimes have negative side effects, such as stigma that could result in stigma and subsequently low self-esteem or poor self-image. This study examines 93 students' responses for a connection between relationships with those who are labelled and attitudes and beliefs about those who are labelled educationally, as well as a possible relationship …

The Feminine Characters In Soledad Acosta’S Una Holandesa En América And The Construction Of A New National Model, Laura Lopez Jan 2017

The Feminine Characters In Soledad Acosta’S Una Holandesa En América And The Construction Of A New National Model, Laura Lopez

Nomenclatura: aproximaciones a los estudios hispánicos

In the novel Una holandesa en América (A Dutchwoman in America), Soledad Acosta (1833-1913, Bogota, Colombia) traces the journey of a young woman, Lucía, to America. Acosta uses literary models such as the Bildungsroman and the chronicles of European travelers to explore women’s place in society of her time and the question of European modernity against American “barbarism” in the context of national construction. As most of the speeches around this topic are from men, Acosta offers a different point of view in the debate and puts into question-established ideas.

Making Sense Of Making Meaning, The Semiotic Way: Emotional Journey Of A Novice Learner, Papia Bawa Jan 2017

Making Sense Of Making Meaning, The Semiotic Way: Emotional Journey Of A Novice Learner, Papia Bawa

The Qualitative Report

I write this auto-ethnography as homage to my teachers and peers, both in the classroom and in scholarly realms, who inspired me to soar beyond the horizons of self and find meaning within the cosmic consciousness that surrounds us. As a novice learner in an introductory semiotics course, I learned about the process of meaning making. This paper is a product of my learning and understanding of a semiotic worldview. Encouraged by my professor, I delved deeply into the “thinkings” of two semiotic masterminds: Charles Sanders Peirce and Jakob von Uexküll, whose philosophies, ideologies and beliefs helped make sense of …

This pretest/posttest study examines the impact of an inter-professional high fidelity simulation experience on perceived levels of knowledge, comfort, and confidence among occupational therapy doctorate students when handling an acutely ill patient in an ICU setting.

Methods: Two cohorts of occupational therapy students participated in an inter-professional acute care scenario with high fidelity simulation mannequins (Cohort 1, n = 19; Cohort 2, n = …

Trauma Sensitive Schools, Maria Bowker Jan 2017

Trauma Sensitive Schools, Maria Bowker

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent research has shown that an astounding number of children have faced adverse childhood experiences. Due to this fact, many of the students sitting in American classrooms have traumatic backgrounds that can cause a variety of side effects including a lack of academic focus, depression, PTSD, and low social-emotional abilities. Schools are the perfect place to implement trauma sensitive frameworks to provide these students an accessible education. Effective trauma sensitive schools are relational, empowering, and consistent. With these traits, research has shown that depression and PTSD symptoms can be reduced, behavior problems can be decreased, and attendance can increase.

End-Of-Life Education And Preparedness Of Physician Assistants In Minnesota And The Surrounding States, Julie Ann Graner, Lukas Steffan, Zachary Stutzman

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the population in the United States ages, palliative care spending and needs have been increasing. Most quality outcome measures, however, have shown inadequate satisfaction among patients and caregivers. A number of studies have investigated the preparation and preparedness of physicians and other medical providers when dealing with end-of-life care, but few have looked in the preparedness of physician assistants (PAs). The aim of this study was to assess the preparedness of PAs when it comes to dealing with end-of-life care and to determine when and how comfort is achieved when dealing with patients at end-of-life. A novel electronic survey …

Beginning Teacher Induction In Secondary Schools: A Best Practice Case Study, S Kearney Jan 2017

Beginning Teacher Induction In Secondary Schools: A Best Practice Case Study, S Kearney

Education Papers and Journal Articles

Beginning teacher induction is becoming an increasingly popular process in acculturating teachers to their new careers. The problems that teachers face early in their careers are well known, and effective and ongoing induction is one of the foremost practices for alleviating the pressures that teachers face early in their careers. While induction practices have become more common in recent years, there are still no mandated structures for inducting teachers into the profession throughout Australia. In a collective case study of six different programs in independent schools in Sydney, Australia, the author showcases one case in particular that illustrated best practice …
