Employing Multivariate Logistic Regression Analysis To Better Understand The Relationship Between Individuals’ Anthropogenic Climate Change Acceptance And Belief In Anti-Climate Change Dissenter Messages, Andrew Phillip Keller Bentley Aug 2017

Employing Multivariate Logistic Regression Analysis To Better Understand The Relationship Between Individuals’ Anthropogenic Climate Change Acceptance And Belief In Anti-Climate Change Dissenter Messages, Andrew Phillip Keller Bentley

Dissertations

Organized climate change dissention groups spend a considerable amount of time and energy developing messages designed to convince the public that anthropogenic climate change is neither a reality nor a threat. These messages work against the efforts of climate educators and can be divided into two categories; messages that provide alternative explanations for warming, or messages that attack the work of scientists studying anthropogenic climate change. There has been a lack of research regarding any correlation between individuals’ agreement with these messages and their rejection of anthropogenic climate change. Establishing a correlation would be an indication that educators should take …

Education: Ancient And Modern, Kyle Edward Eidson Aug 2017

Education: Ancient And Modern, Kyle Edward Eidson

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

John Dewey’s progressive education differed from the classical model. The entrenchment of Dewey’s progressive education at all levels of education has led to a decline in academic performance. The modern ideas of American education hardly resemble the ones it was founded on. This paper looks at a model of classical education adopted by the American founders—as well as classical education itself—and to Dewey, the preeminent scholar and philosopher of American, progressive education, whose aim was to develop an egalitarian society trained in non-traditional academics. The paper also looks at Dewey’s child-centered model that contributes to sinking academic performance, and to …

Elementary Administrators’ Mathematics Supervision & Self-Efficacy Development, Kelly M. Gomez Johnson Aug 2017

Elementary Administrators’ Mathematics Supervision & Self-Efficacy Development, Kelly M. Gomez Johnson

Student Work

Mathematics curriculum reform is changing the content and resources in today’s elementary classrooms as well as the culture of mathematics teaching and learning. Administrators face the challenge of leading large-scale curricular change efforts with limited prior knowledge or experiences with reform curricula structures. Administrators, as the bridge between district and building-level initiatives, are in a unique position to impact and drive change. However, they face increasing responsibilities in their demanding roles and draw on their beliefs and leadership abilities to take action. Increased beliefs in their abilities as leaders, known as self-efficacy, guide administrators to commit and persevere during times …

Best Practices For Differentiated Learning Among Third Through Fifth Grade Ell Students, Tara J. Macias Aug 2017

Best Practices For Differentiated Learning Among Third Through Fifth Grade Ell Students, Tara J. Macias

Masters Theses

With the increase of second language English learners in U.S. kindergarten through twelfth grade schools and the continued achievement gap between these students and English speaking students, educators and administrators need to develop, implement and support best practices for differentiation among English Language Learners. ELL students are often categorized as special education students while their only barrier to learning is language acquisition. On the other hand, ELL students may have additional learning difficulties that are not identified because there is an assumption that language acquisition is the single challenge to their learning. Educators often engage in whole group instruction with …

A Testimonio Reclaiming Acceptance Of My Esl Experience: Trauma, Tex-Mex And Third Space, Cinthia E. Bernal

Theses and Dissertations

Language is a tool that brings all of us together, yet at the same time it also sets us apart. For many of us, it is important to be bilingual and biliterate, but for others, bilingualism is something that is pulling this country apart. Many people, after all, view Spanish as a powerful language that can harm this country, a language that has motivated people to attempt to make English the only language. Ana Celia Zentella tell us “Latina/os, who also have a long history in the United States and became the largest minority in the nation in 2003, are …

Testing Acceptance Of Language Difference In Academia: Perceptions In A First-Year Composition Classroom, Crystal Rodriguez Aug 2017

Testing Acceptance Of Language Difference In Academia: Perceptions In A First-Year Composition Classroom, Crystal Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations

In response to Bawarshi’s collective call for educators to be “more responsive and responsible users and teachers of English,” and motivated by the research of Michelle Hall Kells, I argue that it is necessary for educators to introduce first-year writing students to the historical and sociopolitical aspects of language use in academia through implementing lessons that focus on facets of language diversity. After describing a lesson plan focused on language diversity, I then analyze student feedback using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis as a lens. I also discuss the results of a Likert scale implemented during the three-phase study. Student …

Supporting Nurse Education In The Implementation Of A Pediatric Delirium Assessment Protocol In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Lucy Camarena, Rn, Bsn, Cnl, Cpn, Phn

Master's Projects and Capstones

Delirium has historically been under studied, more so in the pediatric population, despite its long term effects on patients’ health. The deficit in knowledge of delirium leads to an increase in hospital stays and unnecessary unit expenses. My intention with this change project is to increase the awareness of delirium in the pediatric delirium by providing an educational intervention to the PICU nurses. After conducting a root cause, SWOT and cost analysis, I determined that successful education of the PICU nurses about delirium could substantially decrease its incidence. Using Ronald Lippitt’s Change Theory and the CNL competencies as guides I …

A Systematic Reveiw Of Student Self-Report Instruments That Assess Student-Teacher Relationships, Kate L. Phillippo, Jerusha Conner, Shannon Davidson, Denise Pope Aug 2017

A Systematic Reveiw Of Student Self-Report Instruments That Assess Student-Teacher Relationships, Kate L. Phillippo, Jerusha Conner, Shannon Davidson, Denise Pope

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

Background: A large body of survey-based research asserts that the quality and strength of student-teacher relationships (STRs) predict a host of academic and nonacademic outcomes; however, advances in survey design research have led some to question existing survey instruments’ psychometric soundness. Concurrently, qualitative research on STRs has identified important developmental and sociocultural variation in the ways students define, understand, and react to relationships with their teachers. The questions raised by survey methodologists, together with the conceptual elaboration of STRs, suggest that survey instruments used to assess STRs are due for a systematic review.

Purpose/Research Questions: This review of survey instruments …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this collective case study was to discover, describe, and understand 11 public, general, K–12 in-service teachers’ knowledge, experiences, interpretations, and perceptions of education law. In addition, the study investigated teachers’ critical decision-making processes during their daily activities and responsibilities in the education profession in selected areas such as student bullying, fights, grades, students with disabilities, and teachers’ and students’ rights. Three theories that guided the study were constructivism (Young & Collin, 2004), cognitive dissonance (Chapanis & Chapanis, 1964), and self-efficacy (Bandura, 1977). Through purposeful sampling, 11 K–12 in-service teachers from the United States with at least one …

Sustaining The 'Quail Wave' In The Southern Great Plains, Dale Rollins Jul 2017

Sustaining The 'Quail Wave' In The Southern Great Plains, Dale Rollins

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

The southern Great Plains (i.e., Texas and Oklahoma) historically affords some of the best, and currently most stable, northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations anywhere. However, bobwhite populations have declined in recent years over much of this area, especially east of the 98th meridian. Two subsets of the southern plains, the Rolling Plains (parts of northwestern Texas, western Oklahoma, and western Kansas) and the Rio Grande Plains (south Texas) offer the most expansive, contemporary northern bobwhite habitat throughout its range. Bobwhite habitat in the southern plains is affected primarily by rainfall and rangeland management for livestock. Range management practices (brush control, …

This paper examines how gender shaped the family of Nancy Hood McGee, who belonged to one of Georgia’s antebellum planter families, across four generations. The McGee family had joined the planter class late in the antebellum period, and after the American Civil War they continued to be prosperous farmers in the former cotton belt. The essay proposes that women in the McGee family played a determining role in the family’s economic success during this time period. As such, it relates to scholarship on women in the nineteenth-century American South as well as to the role of women within southern families. …
