2018 2nd Place: Budget Disparity In Education, Angelyz Rohena-Franceschini
Harrisburg University Research Symposium (2018 & 2019)
The social issue this project deals with is the budget disparity in America's public schools. This problem is important to investigate because today's children are tomorrow's leaders and if they are not being educated properly, then how do we as a society expect them to lead us in the future.

This paper is a description of the history of my study of art for my Masters of Fine Art program, focusing mainly on painting, that were influenced by various artists and mentors over a 19 year period. I was accepted into the University of Fairbanks Art Department MFA program in 1999, withdrew in 2002, and re-applied and was accepted back into the program in 2015. My program concluded with a verbal presentation with PowerPoint, and a show of my paintings at the Well Street Art Company on April 6, 2018.
Win Or Lose: Residential Sorting After A School Choice Lottery, Andrew Bibler, Stephen Billings
Win Or Lose: Residential Sorting After A School Choice Lottery, Andrew Bibler, Stephen Billings
ISER Reports
We examine residential relocation and opting out of the public school system in response to school choice lottery outcomes. We show that rising kindergarten and sixth graders who lose a school choice lottery are 6 percentage points more likely to exit the district or change neighborhood schools (20-30% increase) and make up 0.14-0.35 standard deviations in average school test scores between lottery assignment and attendance the following year. Using hedonic-based estimates of land prices, we estimate that lottery losers pay a 9-11% housing price premium for access to a school with a one standard deviation higher mean test score.

Inquiry-Based Learning: Effects On Student Engagement, Kimberly Wheatley
Honors Projects
Inquiry-based learning is an approach to science instruction that has been around for over 40 years and has many positive aspects, including: critical thinking, student achievement, positive attitudes towards science, and student engagement. Inquiry-based learning has four different levels and is an instructional method that provides a problem or question which allows students to complete an investigation. This action research project will explore how inquiry-based learning affects student engagement and how student’s feel about inquiry. Students were taught with two days of traditional instruction, two days inquiry-based instruction, and then given a pre-survey and post-survey, and observed using an engagement …

An Inpatient Patient Safety Curriculum For Pediatric Residents., John Szymusiak, Michael D Fox, Catherine Polak, Kwonho Jeong, Doris Rubio, Stephanie Dewar, Andrew Urbach, Alda Maria Gonzaga
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Introduction: Patient safety is recognized as an important part of pediatric resident education. There is a lack of published safety curricula targeting pediatric residents. A local needs assessment showed that while residents felt safety was an important part of their current and future jobs, they did not feel prepared to apply safety principles to their future careers or participate in a root cause analysis (RCA).
Methods: This curriculum was delivered to senior-level pediatric and multiple-board residents during five monthly, hour-long, multidisciplinary sessions. Sessions covered systems-based thinking, terminology, the second victim phenomenon, RCA, and medication errors, while providing feedback on recent …
A Comparison Of Traditional Education And Project-Based Education In Construction Management, Trey Miller
A Comparison Of Traditional Education And Project-Based Education In Construction Management, Trey Miller
Honors College Theses
Construction is a rapidly moving and constantly changing industry. The skills needed to manage the complex task of running a job site safely, on schedule, and within budget, are unique to the field. Construction Management as an academic field is relatively new discipline. Therefore the field is still rapidly evolving. In many cases, classes are taught by engineering professors, which leads to an engineering-focused education as opposed to a Project Management focused education. Therefore Construction Management students are not receiving the “hands-on” experience early enough in their studies. By structuring classes around an applied project, students will attain a more …

Colorectal Cancer Screening Education In Faith-Based Communities, Lindsay B. Medley 4811635, Lynette Smith, Marie Blankenship
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
The principal intent for colorectal cancer screening is early detection and primary prevention of colorectal cancer. In spite of these intentions, there is a reluctance of the general population to participate in screening. Colorectal cancer is preventable. However, screening non-adherence contributes to both cancer mortality and incidence rates and results in expensive, unnecessary health care costs. A faith-based community nurse-driven educational session, using an American Cancer Society PowerPoint, was developed to address barriers of screening non-adherence. The educational session was offered to adults who participate in multiple faith-based organizations. The session provided education regarding colorectal cancer and colorectal cancer screening …

The Impact Of Gap Years On Academic Outcomes For Women: A Case Study From The Missionary Age Change, Margaret Marchant
The Impact Of Gap Years On Academic Outcomes For Women: A Case Study From The Missionary Age Change, Margaret Marchant
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Young adults throughout the United States and other countries participate in “gap years,” or time away from school, often for travel, work, or volunteering. This practice is promoted as a way to mature and refocus. However, some worry that it lowers the likelihood of college completion. Previous literature has investigated the academic, social, and personal benefits of gap years with mixed results; however selection into gap years confounds the true impact with unobservable personal characteristics. To overcome selection issues, I exploit an exogenous policy change that lowered age requirements for missionary service, a unique type of gap year, resulting in …

This practitioner-based research reports on the development and assessment of a transdisciplinary pedagogical model for the learning sciences. The theoretical underpinnings of Poetics of the [Selves]∞ draw from three domains of knowledge: (1) mindfulness, (2) positive psychology, and (3) contemporary performance. The approach is designed to create positive self-transformation in participants as a result of engaging them in a sequence of activities that require different modes of reflection. The model was tested in two settings: a collaborative learning space, and a university classroom. The sample from the first workshop included individuals from the general public, and middle and high-school …
The Cost And Value Of Your Education, T. Perry Hildreth
The Cost And Value Of Your Education, T. Perry Hildreth
Journal of Counseling and Psychology
This brief address explores the issue of the dominance of the economical way of valuing education over a more traditional idea of education as moral formation. An education in a Christian liberal arts university uniquely gives priority to the idea that education should shape the student's moral understanding and consequent actions. The address is an invitation to consider how one, professionally and personally, might serve members of a culture shaped largely by the idea that human meaning and purpose are reducible to economic value as merely producers and consumers.

BACKGROUND: Pain assessment and management in advanced and end-stage dementia are challenging; patients are at risk of under-diagnosis, under-assessment and under-treatment. Previous research has highlighted the importance of needs-driven training and development in this area for physicians, nurses and healthcare assistants (HCAs) across specialties, disciplines and care settings. This study used teleconferencing technology to connect healthcare professionals across multiple settings and disciplines in real-time clinics, based on the Project ECHO© model. This paper reports the evaluation of the clinics by physicians, nurses and HCAs, including their knowledge and self-efficacy in pain assessment and management for patients with advanced and end-stage …
Negotiation And The Construction Of Intimacy In The Letters Between Fronto And Marcus Aurelius, Sarah C. Keith
Negotiation And The Construction Of Intimacy In The Letters Between Fronto And Marcus Aurelius, Sarah C. Keith
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This project analyzes the letters between Marcus Cornelius Fronto and his student Marcus Aurelius as works of literature, rather than merely sites for historical mining. The letters, I argue, contain carefully constructed tropes of rhetoric and feature intentional polish that serve as opportunities for discussion about the virtues of philosophy and rhetoric during the Second Sophistic. Topics of discussions between both parties range between the imagery of sleep, and intimate spaces, like bedrooms, to substantive allusions to Plato’s philosophy and his dialogue Phaedrus. By looking beyond the identification of concrete names and dates to the literary, referential, and personal world …

Don’T Believe The Hype: The Radical Elements Of Hip-Hop, Jenell Navarro, Catherine Trujillo, Jeremiah Hernandez, Logan Kregness, John Duch, Anna Teiche
Creative Works
“Don’t Believe the Hype: the Radical Elements of Hip-Hop” is an installation that showcases the five elements of hip-hop culture. These elements—graffiti writing, breakdancing, deejaying, emceeing, and knowledge production— have been utilized to speak truth and justice about social ills in the United States and beyond. This exhibit illustrates the conscious roots of hip-hop culture from the South Bronx in the 1970s and follows that course to our current moment, where hip-hop still remains a powerful voice for those who are marginalized by dominant structures of power.

Definitively Lutheran?: An Exploration Of Definitive Lutheran Characteristics In Higher Education, John Eggen
Doctor of Ministry Theses
This mixed-method, exploratory case study explores definitively Lutheran practices in higher education. This research explores emerging themes from Intersections and other publications reflecting upon institutional religious identity. This research explores the student experiences, expectations, and perspectives through a student survey and the perspectives of institutional leadership through qualitative research. It evaluates definitive characteristics of Lutheran higher education through the lenses of adaptive change, organizational theory, open systems theory, Lutheran identity, vocation, and exploring an understanding of missional, cruciform, perichoretic communities from the Pauline epistles. The results reveal limited statistically significant difference among students based on religious affiliation, but a divergent …

Lutheran Higher Education In A Secular Age: Religious Identity And Mission At Elca Colleges And Universities, Brian A.F. Beckstrom
Doctor of Ministry Theses
This exploratory mixed methods case study examined the relationship between espoused and perceived religious identity and mission at five colleges and universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America through the lenses of secularization theory, missional leadership, ecclesiology, Trinitarian theology, adaptive leadership, and challenges in the higher education market. Results indicated that humanism is the primary means of describing religious identity and mission at ELCA schools and there are widely varying assumptions about what it means to be a college or university of the church. Advocates and skeptics of the institution’s religious identity and mission interpret reality through the lens …
