Pondering The Future Of Basic Education. Developing, Reforming And Finding A Balance., Aija Rinkinen

i.e.: inquiry in education

Education has always been important part of the Finnish society, and both education and the teaching profession have traditionally been held in high regard. Finnish basic education has received international acclaim and attention over the years for its high quality and good results. Part of the success can be explained by Finnish culture, where education and learning are considered to be an important resource to a small country.

Parental Education And Perceptions Of Personal Self-Efficacy, Anthony R. Eldridge May 2018

Parental Education And Perceptions Of Personal Self-Efficacy, Anthony R. Eldridge

Student Theses and Dissertations

Researchers are aware of the impact of high individual levels of self-efficacy and academic success [Coy-Ogan, 2009; Gardner & Holley, 2011; Hayden, 2008; U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2001; Zavala, 2014]. Yet, we still lack investigation on the relationships between parent education and their offspring’s level of self-efficacy. Specific self-efficacy variables such as academic, research, and social have been identified (Williams, 2005); however, they have not been fully explored in the literature from the perspective of the university student population. The current research evaluated parent education level and its relationship to the self-efficacy beliefs of college …

A Realist Model Of Prison Education, Growth, And Desistance: A New Theory, Kirstine Szifris, Chris Fox, Andrew Bradbury May 2018

A Realist Model Of Prison Education, Growth, And Desistance: A New Theory, Kirstine Szifris, Chris Fox, Andrew Bradbury

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

This paper articulates the first ‘general theory’ of prison education, offering a new insight into the relevance of desistance theory and understanding of prison sociology to the lives of men engaged in education whilst in prison. Using a realist review method (Pawson, 2002b; Wong, 2013a) we develop a rough, initial general theory of prison education articulated in the form of three context-mechanism-outcome configurations (CMO). We then ‘test’ these CMOs by assessing the current evidence base through a systematic review of literature. This paper articulates three inter-related CMOs that we ground in prison sociology and desistance literature: ‘hook’, ‘safe space’ and …

Contributing Factors To Mass Incarceration And Recidivism, Nayely Esparza Flores May 2018

Contributing Factors To Mass Incarceration And Recidivism, Nayely Esparza Flores

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The United States has been historically known for having the most incarcerated individuals in its country. Approximately 2.3 million adults can be found under some type of penal control. Since the 1960s, the number of incarcerated individuals can be attributed to decades of tough on crime policies, controversial police practices, and racism. Mass incarceration has raised significant social justice issues, especially since it has been heavily concentrated on poor, uneducated African American men. Moreover, recidivism rates in the United States are at an all time high with over 76.6% of offenders reoffending and returning to prison (National Institute of Justice, …

Education Policy and Leadership Theses and Dissertations

American higher education faces increasing pressure to contain the cost of a college degree, forcing institutions to address both costs and the resulting meaningful organizational change. As a labor-intensive industry, the most effective strategies incorporate best practices related to maximizing human resources. Organizational commitment, an employees’ connection to and affinity for their employer, offers valuable insights into organizational change programs. Employees with strong commitment to their organization demonstrate a greater propensity to endure the exertion required for success during times of significant change. This study investigated the research question, how does a university staff member’s formal involvement in a cost …

An Action Research Investigation Into An Early Childhood Digital, Storytelling-Based Solution, Jessica Smith May 2018

An Action Research Investigation Into An Early Childhood Digital, Storytelling-Based Solution, Jessica Smith

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The development of literacy skills prior to the classroom has been established as essential for future school and life successes. However, the present achievement gap between lower-socioeconomic neighborhoods and their higher-income counterparts illustrate vast dissimilarities in early childhood provisions for quality reading materials and instructional aides. In an effort to bridge the educational breach, a collaborative, storytelling-based program entitled Kid Forward was introduced to five nationwide families as a means of assistance for early childhood literacy development. Through the use of demographic surveys, interviews completed before and after the program implementation, and exit surveys, the action research study examined early …

The Price To Play Ball: Athletics Expenses And Subsidy At Public Fbs Schools, Brent D. Upham

Education Policy and Leadership Theses and Dissertations

College athletics play a significant role in the landscape of higher education, especially with regard to those colleges and universities participating in the highest level of competition. The costs associated with participation at this level are also significant and the majority of these athletics programs depend on institutional financial support, or subsidy, to keep their athletics programs afloat. In recent years, a number of these colleges and universities have decided to shift athletics conferences with the hopes of both generating more revenue and increasing the status of their respective institutions.

By using a quantitative research design, I evaluated total athletics …

A Qualitative Study On The Practice Of Executive Coaching To Improve Leadership Capacity In Academic Deans At American Higher Education Institutions, David Bertrand May 2018

A Qualitative Study On The Practice Of Executive Coaching To Improve Leadership Capacity In Academic Deans At American Higher Education Institutions, David Bertrand

Education Policy and Leadership Theses and Dissertations

The history and sociology of faculty career transitions to deanships is an intriguing phenomenon, given that the skill sets of accomplished scholars vary immensely from the duties and responsibilities of academic deans. On top of that, today’s academic deans face particularly challenging leadership dilemmas. Navigating the transition from a scholarly focus to adopt a more team-oriented, managerial approach may prove difficult, especially when personal interests might need to be sacrificed for the unit’s collective gain—an idea not necessarily supported or rewarded in a researcher/scholar paradigm. This exploratory, qualitative study sought to examine if executive coaching is an effective strategy to …

Teaching Towards A Culture Of Peace In Early Childhood Education Classrooms, Samantha Ferber

Master's Projects and Capstones

This curriculum guide was conceived keeping in mind the diverse educational settings of early childhood education in the United States. It is especially targeted for preschool classrooms of children aged two and a half to four years old. However, it can be modified for use in early elementary school where teachers hope to incorporate peace education into their classrooms. Early childhood educators are the primary audience for this guidebook, but any educator, parent, or caregiver can benefit from the concepts of peace education.

This curriculum guide should stem from a critical engagement between teachers and the communities within which they …
