A reliability generalization meta-analysis was performed to explore the relationship between study factors and levels of alpha reliability for the 15 subscales of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). The MSLQ has been widely adapted over the past 25 years to investigate the role of motivation and strategies in learning, primarily at the postsecondary level. A literature search from the years 1991 to 2015 yielded 295 peer-reviewed journal articles and 1,369 alpha reliability coefficients. Articles were coded for six potential moderator study variables. A novel varying coefficient (VC) model was adopted to determine average reliabilities across studies for each …

Adopting a customer-based discovery process, the current study conducted a set of 78 informal interviews with two main groups: faculty members who teach water resources and hydrology courses, and practicing engineers with specialty in the same field. The interviews revealed that the main motivation for faculty to develop or adopt new educational innovations stems from self-efficacy and desire to achieve effective instructional strategies. Other factors, such as institutional requirements and faculty evaluations …

Using Trade Books To Identify And Change Discriminatory Practices, Monisha Moore Sep 2018

Using Trade Books To Identify And Change Discriminatory Practices, Monisha Moore

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

Elementary students need opportunities to explore social justice issues in their classrooms. They also need to examine text to analyze historical figures’ values, biases, and beliefs. Using trade books is one method to expose students to multiple perspectives in a diverse world. Having students identify, analyze, and address discriminatory practices through trade books equips them with the skills necessary to build empathy and address oppressive systems.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the ideal timing for providers to perform point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) with the least increase in workload.

METHODS: We conducted a pilot crossover study to compare 2 POCUS-assisted evaluation protocols for acutely ill patients: sequential (physical examination followed by POCUS) vs parallel (POCUS at the time of physical examination). Participants were randomly assigned to 2 groups according to which POCUS-assisted protocol (sequential vs parallel) was used during simulated scenarios. Subsequently, the groups were crossed over to complete assessment by using the other POCUS-assisted protocol in the same patient scenarios. Providers' workloads, measured …

The Challenging And Empowering Elements Of Doctoral Data Collection, Lawrence Nyika Sep 2018

The Challenging And Empowering Elements Of Doctoral Data Collection, Lawrence Nyika

The Qualitative Report

Data collection was the most challenging aspect of my doctoral journey as an African immigrant student due to a highly unpredictable research environment. This article reports on my doctoral fieldwork experiences in one Canadian province’s public secondary schools. The purpose of the article is to highlight data collection challenges and supports in qualitative research. Several barriers to doctoral fieldwork are evidenced in the article, whose successful navigation was enabled by an empowering spiritual experience and supportive and engaging supervision. Doctoral data collection narratives may not appeal to every reader, but their academic and therapeutic significance should not be underestimated.

Connectivity & Collaboration Is About Inclusion, John Mcgrory, Aitor Arribas Velasco, Matteo Zalio Sep 2018

Connectivity & Collaboration Is About Inclusion, John Mcgrory, Aitor Arribas Velasco, Matteo Zalio

Conference papers

IoT technology offers an opportunity to reuse components and share data between project stakeholders, thereby reducing the cost of duplication and improve the prospect of collaboration. We read in papers that this stakeholder “collaborated” with this partner or that person. However, what is frequently touted as collaboration is in fact a lead stakeholder leveraging (typically) domain knowledge from partners. A true collective collaborative solution should be a better solution, than cases where one stakeholder leads the process, leveraging (bolting-on) other stakeholder intellectual components. This paper will demonstrate a framework and technique to act as an educational tool to help non-technical …

Background

Myotonic Dystrophy is the most common form of muscular dystrophy in adults, affecting an estimated 10 per 100,000 people. It is a multisystemic disorder affecting multiple generations with increasing severity. There are currently no licenced therapies to reverse, slow down or cure its symptoms. In 2009 TREAT-NMD (a global alliance with the mission of improving trial readiness for neuromuscular diseases) and the Marigold Foundation held a workshop of key opinion leaders to agree a minimal dataset for patient registries in myotonic dystrophy. Eight years after this workshop, we surveyed 22 registries collecting information on myotonic dystrophy patients to assess …

Talking In Whispers: How School Leaders Approach And Discuss Race, Caleb Hettinger Sep 2018

Talking In Whispers: How School Leaders Approach And Discuss Race, Caleb Hettinger

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

This study seeks to better understand how school administrators approach and discuss issues of race and racism in K–12 schools. Police shootings, the 2016 election, and riots across America have put race at the center of conversations, but many school administrators avoid discussing these issues in professional settings to avoid tension. Existing school leaders were surveyed to determine their attitudes and perceptions of racial dialogue. Findings indicate that school leaders report being willing and comfortable in discussing race. However, administrators also reported that they avoid these discussions unless prompted. Implications from this work suggest a need to better prepare school …

The Anarchist Classroom: A Test Of Libertarian Education And Human Nature At The Modern School In New York And New Jersey, 1911-1953, Eric G. Anderson Sep 2018

The Anarchist Classroom: A Test Of Libertarian Education And Human Nature At The Modern School In New York And New Jersey, 1911-1953, Eric G. Anderson

Student Theses

A study of anarchist education at the beginning of the twentieth century questions common perceptions of anarchists as solely bomb-throwing radicals and reveals that they cared deeply about children and the future of humankind. Inspired by the martyrdom of Francisco Ferrer, Spanish anarchist and founder of anarchist schools in Barcelona, anarchists worldwide applied their radical principles to the creation of “Modern Schools.” In these schools, anarchists attempted to blend Enlightenment ideals of freedom with politically revolutionary goals. The Modern School movement reached its zenith in the decade following Ferrer’s 1909 execution by the Spanish government for sedition, but declined by …

Graduate Student Perceptions And Experiences With Connectivity In An Asynchronous, Online Distance Degree Program, Katherine Terras, Patti Mahar, Kari Chiasson, Shawnda Schroeder, Mary Baker

Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications

A challenge within higher education is that student retention is lower in online programs than in traditional programs partly due to a disconnection between students and the institution. An initial study conducted by the authors of this study confirmed that students in an online program desired connectivity. The research team sought participants from the original study to participate in a consensual qualitative research study. Results indicated that students desired high connectivity with advisors, instructors, and the program and some connectivity to their peers. The leading factor that contributed to their feelings of connectedness was ongoing and timely communication.

Mayflower: Ode To New Beginnings — A New Column For New Times With A Positive Mission, Antje Mays

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

Numerous studies and articles downplay the value of libraries, citing instances of library defunding, layoffs, and outright closures, along with studies on the waning usefulness of libraries based on flawed quantifiables. Such pronouncements spread fear of obsolescence and irrelevance, contributing to dissatisfaction in the library profession. Yet polls in the United States and Great Britain reveal the library profession's enduring value among the most trusted professions.

To kick off the column "Mayflower: Ode to New Beginnings", this article frames library pressures in a context of broader trends affecting economic and educational conditions, examines professional stewardship and the library profession’s enduring …

Finding Light In The Caves: Achieving Professional And Personal Bliss On A Journey In Cheeseworld, Mitchell Bleier Sep 2018

Finding Light In The Caves: Achieving Professional And Personal Bliss On A Journey In Cheeseworld, Mitchell Bleier

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The most common approach to educating the populace places learners in contrived, curriculum-centered learning environments that are characterized by uniformity, standardization, and incessant high-stakes testing. The primacy of efficiency, an externally imposed and shifting set of non-negotiables, and top-down management dominate schooling. This set of circumstances tends to marginalize learners whose particular attributes, needs, wants and goals locate them far from what can be considered representative of the average student. In other words, efficiency trumps difference and leaves many learners in need of alternative paths to happiness and fulfillment (Callahan, 1962).

This system works for some, but for many it …

People migrate from far lands to settle down and find the missing link that was absent in their native country. Among numerous reasons, financial inefficiency and social and political insecurity at homeland, new immigration policies in the US, expectation of a better socio-economic lifestyle and a secure and prosperous future for their children are some key reasons why immigrants move out of their motherland and travel to America. They hope and …

Academic “Centres,” Epistemic Differences And Brain Circulation, Yasmin Y. Ortiga, Meng‐Hsuan Chou, Gunjan Sondhi, Jue Wang Sep 2018

Academic “Centres,” Epistemic Differences And Brain Circulation, Yasmin Y. Ortiga, Meng‐Hsuan Chou, Gunjan Sondhi, Jue Wang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article investigates the factors that shape how migrant academics engage with fellow scholars within their countries of origin. We focus specifically on the mobility of Asian‐born faculty between Singapore, a fast‐developing education hub in Southeast Asia, and their “home” countries within the region. Based on qualitative interviews with 45 migrant academics, this article argues that while education hubs like Singapore increase the possibility of brain circulation within Asia, epistemic differences between migrant academics and home country counterparts make it difficult to establish long‐term collaboration for research. Singapore institutions also look to the West in determining how research work is …

The Impact Of Cleft Lip And Palate Repair Surgery On Cognitive And Academic Outcomes For Teens In India, R Jeremiah Maller

Master's Theses

India has a backlog of nearly one million patients in need of cleft lip and palate repair. Unrepaired cleft results in social stigma and diminished health, psychological wellbeing, and academic functioning. Cleft repair surgery has the potential to restore functioning in these domains. However, the magnitude of the social, educational, and economic impact of cleft repair surgery has not been evaluated using statistically rigorous methods. An estimation of the academic and educational impact of cleft repair has implications for the appropriate allocation of public health resources. We analyze original data gathered from teenagers in West Bengal, India using the difference-in-differences …
