Problem Based Learning: A Case Study From Mechanical Engineering, Kevin Delaney, Ger Nagle May 2019

Problem Based Learning: A Case Study From Mechanical Engineering, Kevin Delaney, Ger Nagle

Conference papers

Engineering graduates today must be capable of much more than solving technical problems taught in engineering school. Despite learning to quantify the performance of certain engineering objects, undergraduate students find it challenging to integrate these elements into basic design concepts through a coherent and systematic design process. To help students develop real-world engineering skills as part of their engineering education, the Mechanical Engineering Discipline in Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) introduced Problem Based Learning (PBL) for Third Year Mechanical Engineering students in 2005.

A recent review of this teaching approach highlighted deficiencies not envisaged when the initial PBL module was …

Educating Latin American Baseball Players:How Mlb Should Protect Their Players For After Their Careers, Gabrielle Rockwell May 2019

Educating Latin American Baseball Players:How Mlb Should Protect Their Players For After Their Careers, Gabrielle Rockwell

Pepperdine Policy Review

Latin American players represent approximately one third of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) signed players. These players often do not possess a basic high school diploma before they are signed to a contract. While the MLB capitalizes on Latino players during their careers, the organization fails to show concern for their players’ post-baseball success and opportunities. By mandating contribution to a scholarship for all signed players on all 30 teams, the MLB and individual baseball teams would help encourage educational attainment as well as baseball talent development in their players. This paper will demonstrate the need for Latin American baseball players …

Implementing Routine Hiv Testing And Prevention In A Primary Care Setting, Michelle Bassett

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Evidenced-based research has identified that routine HIV testing and education is pivotal in identifying new infections, providing access to treatment, and decreasing the rates of transmission. In 2006, the CDC implemented new guidelines recommending that all persons aged 13-64 years be tested yearly for HIV regardless of risk factors. Despite these recommendations, the CDC estimated that less than 37% of people were tested in 2017 and in the years prior. In this project, a protocol for routine testing and education was developed and implemented in a private Southern Illinois primary care practice. Providers and staff were educated on HIV and …

All Parts And Parcels: Unpacking And Analyzing Kentucky Education Reform, Matthew A. Lee

Honors Theses

Since the mid-twentieth century, public education in the Commonwealth of Kentucky has often faced opposition from its General Assembly. Historically underfunded, Kentucky’s public education system has consistently placed near the bottom in all measures of student assessment and school finance in the nation, according to data published annually by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Over the last thirty years, however, the General Assembly has taken some steps toward improvement. The purpose of this paper is to present a historical record of these reform efforts and to analyze whether these alterations have been effective. To assess the state’s role …

Simulation Enhances Soft Skills Among Inter-Professionals Participating In An International Service-Learning Experience To A Resource-Limited Country, Suzanne Trotter, Sharon Dunnivan-Mitchell

Physical Therapy Collection

Introduction: Soft skills are the hallmark of a master healthcare provider. One of the most effective ways to teach soft skills to healthcare providers is through service-learning. Evidence suggests that adding simulation as part of a service-learning team’s pre-departure training (PDT) will better prepare them to resolve ethical and cultural dilemmas often encountered in resource-limited countries, plus facilitate soft skills. We hypothesized that simulation could improve soft skills of physical and occupational therapy students and clinicians providing rehabilitation services on a one-week service-learning experience in Guatemala.

Methods: A convenience sample of 21 physical and occupational therapy students and …

Arkansas' Coding For All - Is It Really Reaching All Students?, Kaitlin Mckenzie

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Arkansas Computer Science Initiative required every high school to offer at least one computer science course by the 2015-16 academic year. Schools that did not have a qualified teacher were given access to online courses. It is important to point out that students do not need a computer science course to graduate, but credit in a computer science course could replace a 3rd science credit requirement or a 4th math credit requirement (ADE / ARCareerED Computer Science Fact Sheet). Some initial success has already been demonstrated. In 2014- 15 there were sixty computer science classes offered in all of …
