Predictors Of Barriers To Participation In Clinical Research In Adults Living In The Southeastern United States, Jennifer Scanlon
Predictors Of Barriers To Participation In Clinical Research In Adults Living In The Southeastern United States, Jennifer Scanlon
DNP Projects
Research is the necessary foundation for health care advancement and understanding. Significant challenges exist, however, with recruiting and engaging underrepresented populations in clinical research. The purpose of the scholarly project was to determine how stakeholder race, trust, and level of education influence participation barriers in clinical research. The project utilized secondary, cross sectional survey data that were collected between 2014 and 2016 through the former Mid-South Clinical Data Research Network (CDRN), currently known as the STAR-CRN. Descriptive statistics and spearman rank correlations were performed between level of education, level of trust, and each attitude statement for each racial category. A …
The Impact Of Non-Government Organizations On Women’S Mobility In Public Life: An Empirical Study In Rural Bangladesh, Faraha Nawaz
The Impact Of Non-Government Organizations On Women’S Mobility In Public Life: An Empirical Study In Rural Bangladesh, Faraha Nawaz
Journal of International Women's Studies
The article aims to analyse the impact of Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) on Bangladeshi rural women’s mobility in the public domain, since this is an area that is generally only frequented by men whilst women are confined to their own home and neighbourhood. In other words, the author explored how and to what extent, NGOs have brought changes to women’s freedom of movement in the public sphere. The author was influenced by the existing literature that portrays Bangladesh as a country that is characterized by poverty, patriarchy and inequality, where there is no tradition of rural women participating in the labour …

Internet Architecture And Disability, Blake Reid
Internet Architecture And Disability, Blake Reid
Indiana Law Journal
The Internet is essential for education, employment, information, and cultural and democratic participation. For tens of millions of people with disabilities in the United States, barriers to accessing the Internet—including the visual presentation of information to people who are blind or visually impaired, the aural presentation of information to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and the persistence of Internet technology, interfaces, and content without regard to prohibitive cognitive load for people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities—collectively pose one of the most significant civil rights issues of the information age. Yet disability law lacks a comprehensive theoretical approach …

The Influence Of End Of Life Education On Stress, Anxiety, And Attitude Of The Healthcare Profession Student, Chiquesha Davis
DNP Final Reports
Providing comfort and support to the dying patient is a significant part of the dying process. When soothing a patient, who is dying, the goal is to prevent or relieve suffering as much as possible. Respecting the patient's health and quality of life goals and decisions is essential. Healthcare profession students can experience multiple levels of anxiety, stress, and a negative attitude while taking care of the dying patient. The implementation of a successful intervention is at the cornerstone of helping reduce stress, anxiety, and attitude change in healthcare profession students. The application can also have a positive impact on …
Reducing Pressure Injuries In The Intensive Care Setting: Nursing Knowledge And Best Practices Approach, Michelle Harvey
Reducing Pressure Injuries In The Intensive Care Setting: Nursing Knowledge And Best Practices Approach, Michelle Harvey
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: For many health care organizations, pressure injury (PI) prevention strategies have become a priority focus to improve patient outcomes and associated costs.
Problem: A rural community hospital located in the Eastern U.S. experienced an increase in hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs), predominantly in the intensive care unit (ICU). In 2018, 17.4% of HAPIs occurred in the ICU.
Approach: Implementation of a Quality Improvement project in an adult ICU, providing education and on-going learning activities to nursing staff, and applying a standardized plan of care “bundle” for prevention interventions.
Outcomes: The approach resulted in improved documentation of flotation of heels, …
Socially Just Artmaking: A Practitioner's Inquiry Of Passionate Teaching For Compassionate Action, Jaime Linn Brown
Socially Just Artmaking: A Practitioner's Inquiry Of Passionate Teaching For Compassionate Action, Jaime Linn Brown
Education Doctorate Dissertations
The arts serve as a vehicle to activate imagination of students in developing a broaderunderstanding of injustice, its consequences, and the range of alternative possibilities (Bell &Desai, 2011). As more young artists engage in this dialogue, we must investigate how young people themselves make sense of and experience the transformative power of the arts (Dewhurst, 2014). Activist art can communicate ideas about individual and community experiences to a wider audience; it can make public that which has been ignored, silenced, or kept from public conscience (Dewhurst, 2014). Visual expression allows one to increase their understandings beyond the limitations of words …

Engagement And Computational Thinking Through Creative Coding, Dana Hoppe
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Rising enrollments in Computer Science pose an opportunity to engage students from diverse backgrounds and interests; and a challenge to deliver on positive learning outcomes. While student engagement is the driving factor for increased learning performance and retention, it has been declining to new lows for Computer Science students in recent years. In order to further explore the potential of contextualized computing as a tool for increasing engagement in computing and developing Computational Thinking aptitude in students, we have developed an introductory computing course contextualized with Art and Design with modules centered around guiding pedagogical principles and aimed at middle …

Let's Talk About The Birds And The Bees: A Framework For Providing Sexual Education In Special Education, Heather Cowden
Let's Talk About The Birds And The Bees: A Framework For Providing Sexual Education In Special Education, Heather Cowden
MOT Student Capstones
Background: Studies have shown that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are anywhere from three to seven times more likely to be sexual abused. These individuals are also more likely to be victims of bullying and may display maladaptive sexual behaviors due to their lack of sexual health knowledge. While provision of sexual health education has been shown to have many benefits including helping to decrease bullying and increase academic success, many students in special education, especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, receiving little to no sexual education. This capstone project is aimed to raise awareness for the need …
Legitimacy And Agency Implementation Of Title Ix, Samuel R. Bagenstos
Legitimacy And Agency Implementation Of Title Ix, Samuel R. Bagenstos
Law & Economics Working Papers
Because Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 involves a subject that remains highly controversial in our polity (sex roles and interactions among the sexes more generally), and because it targets a highly sensitive area (education), the administration of that statute by the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights has long drawn criticism. The critics have not merely noted disagreements with the legal and policy decisions of the agency, however. Rather, they have attacked the agency’s decisions for being illegitimate—for reflecting the agency’s improper imposition of value judgments on the statute. Three key applications of Title IX have …

If You Can’T Beat Them, Join Them: A Quantitative Look At Conference Realignment And Fbs Institutions, Daniel H. Hrdina
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This study took a quantitative look at the statistical effect on admissions of NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly Division IA, institutions’ moves from one athletic conference to another conference with greater athletic success. This study was unique because although previous research in the area of college athletics had identified number of applications and quality of the applicants as variables associated with athletic success, there has been minimal research on the statistical relationship of changing football conferences while using these variables. This study also provides a clear definition and ranking system for yearly conference prestige. The research question …
Equality In Education For Latina Women, Megan Warburton
Equality In Education For Latina Women, Megan Warburton
Student Research Symposium
Latina women in the United States face various educational, social, and familial pressures while striving to obtain a valuable education and break boundaries created by stereotypes in the country. Stereotypes of Latinas in the media have created false beliefs regarding their characters and abilities, in turn causing negative repercussions in communities and social environments. They often face unfair and biased treatment in schools and don’t receive adequate help from teachers or counselors to excel in high school and prepare for college. Much of this inequality inhibits their ability to feel confident in their future of education. Not only must Latina …

The State Of American Historical Education: The Forgotten Subject, Emma Norton
Student Research Symposium
This research analyzes American historical education within the United States by looking at standardized test scores, inconsistencies in information being taught, and irregularities in reported data in order to understand the state of U.S. History education within the United States. This research begins by exploring the different reasons for teaching American history and next analyzes what is being taught. By looking at U.S. History textbooks from 1876 to 2010 in the context of American Civil War teachings, research indicates that students across generations are learning different information about the same historical events. Next, the research looks at trends in students’ …
Increasing Knowledge And Self-Efficacy In Nurses Orienting To Cardiovascular Surgery Using A New Periop 202 Program, David Reinhart
Increasing Knowledge And Self-Efficacy In Nurses Orienting To Cardiovascular Surgery Using A New Periop 202 Program, David Reinhart
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
The operating room theater can be intimidating for new nurses, thus leading to a shortage of nurses who are comfortable working in this environment. Evidence supports that 50% of perioperative nurses in 2017 were between the age of 50 and 59. Additionally, no formal didactic courses are being offered in undergraduate programs and the challenging environment related directly to the future shortage of perioperative nurses. This negatively impacts the number of trained perioperative cardiovascular nurses. The project proposed a new didactic educational Perioperative (Periop) 202 program that aimed to increase nurses’ self-efficacy to function on the cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) …
"Fidelity And Ripeness": The Telos Of Milton's Mature Christian Learners, Steven Mckay Hansen
"Fidelity And Ripeness": The Telos Of Milton's Mature Christian Learners, Steven Mckay Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, I argue that Milton envisions a long view of education in which continual encounters with evil allow created beings to prove themselves and gradually approach a state like God’s—a state marked by constant righteous habits and by a dilation of subjective time with increased access to past and future knowledge. I discuss the roles of opposition in Miltonic education, illustrating how non-examples may result in apophatic revelation about the divine. Acts of rebellion in Paradise Lost demonstrate, however, that the timetable for introducing opposition proves complex, since created beings, the devil among them, act on their own …

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
The use of new technologies in all areas of life becomes essential especially as a mean of communication. Social networks are important in the communication of individuals and establishments. Many departments, private and public establishments have an account on Facebook or Twitter which they use as an official mean of communication. As new technologies provide us with open and accessible means of communication that make our lives easier, some people use them in ways that can harm our society. Schools and families must play a role in teaching children to sort through digital information and check the credibility of the …

Rural Caregivers: Identification Of Informational Needs Through Telemedicine Questions, Shoshana H. Bardach, Allison Gibson, Kelly Parsons, April Stauffer, Gregory A. Jicha
Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and associated disorders is increasing. Rural residents in the United States have less access to memory care specialists and educational and community resources than in other areas of the country. Over a decade ago, we initiated an interdisciplinary rural caregiving telemedicine program to reach Kentucky residents in areas of the state where resources for supporting individuals with dementia are limited. Telemedicine programs involve a short informational presentation followed by a question and answer session; programs are offered 4 times a year. The purpose of this study was to explore questions asked over 1 year …

Gender Equality, Education, And Development: Tensions Between Global, National, And Local Policy Discourses In Postcolonial Contexts, Naureen Durrani, Anjum Halai
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
For the third time in three decades world leaders reaffirmed their promise of "Education For All" when adopting Sustainable Development Goal 4 in 2015. It is the most far-reaching commitment to quality and equity in education so far, yet, there is no consensus on what the agenda means in practice. With a decade left until the 2030 deadline, Grading Goal Four calls upon the education community to engage more thoughtfully and critically with SDG 4 and related efforts. As an ever-growing number of actors and initiatives claim to contribute to its achievement, it is becoming clear that the ambitious but …

College of Education
Transgender people suffer from others’ negative attitudes in many situations. The university context is one environment where further progress has to be made to ensure the inclusion of transgender people. In this study, a sample of 376 undergraduate students was collected and their attitudes towards transgender people were analyzed. A comparison was made between number of years in university, and a sample from the general public. In addition, comparisons were made by gender, since the literature shows more negative attitudes toward transgender people in men than in women. The results show relatively positive attitudes toward transgender people among higher education …
