Symptoms Of Trauma Related To The Covid-19 Pandemic In Educators And Students, Leanne S. Parker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
In the United States, a nationwide shutdown began in mid-March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the shutdown began, many people faced financial insecurity, health insecurity, and food insecurity. When the shutdown began, most schools broke for spring break and did not reconvene for the remainder of the school year. This created huge gaps in necessary services and resources for students and families including academics, mental health services, social supports, food resources, and connection to the community. This study explores trauma and stress symptoms educators and students have experienced in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study …
Institutional Changes In Western Michigan University For Incorporation Of Education For Sustainability, Saman Khan
Institutional Changes In Western Michigan University For Incorporation Of Education For Sustainability, Saman Khan
Dissertations
Higher Education institutions (HEIs) have the potential to be significant contributors in the pursuit of a sustainable world through the incorporation of Education for Sustainability (EFS). However, HEIs are entrenched with structures and values that are often resistant to change. The literature reveals that instructors’ beliefs and institutional contexts are the two main factors that impact the implementation of institutional change for sustainability education. Western Michigan University (WMU) has created new required curriculum “WMU Essential Studies” (WES) for undergraduate students and they have targeted sustainability as an essential learning outcome, by integrating and applying it in content courses. Using a …

Knowledge And Beliefs Of Adolescents About Acne: Baseline And Post-Intervention Assessments Using An Interactive Educational Tool, Mohammed Mehanna, May Saab
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory skin condition affecting teenagers around the globe. Lack of knowledge and false beliefs about acne are factors contributing to non-adherence to acne treatment that would result in treatment failure. Since acne is a highly prevalent skin condition in Lebanon, educating Lebanese adolescents about acne is vital to achieve a better treatment outcome. The aim of the present study is to assess the baseline knowledge of a sample of Lebanese adolescents using a self-administered questionnaire, and increase the level through an educational intervention (interactive audio-visual presentation). The knowledge score was assessed before and after the …

The phenomenon of the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed the format of public education, putting stress on the educational system and its teachers. This research study aims to understand the impact of COVID-19 on the role of teachers in Maine, specifically focusing on the added responsibility that parents may experience while simultaneously meeting professional obligations. Researchers posed the question: “What is the relationship between caregiving responsibilities and emotional wellbeing of teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic among public school teachers in Maine?” Participants from K-12 public schools around the state were recruited through direct contact or via building administrators who distributed …

Impact Of Schema On Students' Writing, Hali-Ana Harvey
Honors Theses
All too often, students perform poorly on their writing assignments, and it seems that teachers have difficulty understanding where the problem comes from. This study seeks to prove that the issue begins with the students’ lack of background knowledge that students possess about the topics they are being asked to write about. To begin, the author emphasizes the importance of background knowledge in students. The study also describes ways in which teachers can check for background knowledge before assigning writing, and explores how teachers can build background knowledge in students. To improve students’ overall writing, teachers need to first recognize …
The Effects Of Fictional Literature On Real-World Perceptions Of Students, Dylan Dowty
The Effects Of Fictional Literature On Real-World Perceptions Of Students, Dylan Dowty
Honors Theses
The ways in which fiction affect the perceptions of high school students’ realities are many, and they vary widely depending on the book read. While lessons can be learned from every fictional book, certain types of books are more beneficial and relevant for students. Young adult literature, while often overlooked, is a significant source of students’ perspective shifts and metacognition. Every book has a lesson that it can teach students, but contemporary young adult literature deserves to be taught in schools alongside the classics in order for students to make personal connections with the texts they read and take an …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
Sexual literacy is an important aspect of the formative development of individuals as it influences their capacity to think about and act upon factors affecting the sexual aspect of their lives. However, achieving a certain level of sexual literacy is still a complex path in society, especially in prestigious schools in the Philippines such as De La Salle University Manila (DLSU-M). This study aims to assess DLSU-M Senior High School (SHS) students’ level of sexual literacy, determine factors significantly explaining it, and form statistical models based on the significant factors. Both Poisson regression models and Logistic regression models revealed significantly …

Diffusion Of Virtual And Augmented Reality In Pre-K To 12 Education: Experiences And Perceptions Of Pioneer Teachers, Frances Nana Ofosu-Amaah
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The diffusion of the virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) technological ecosystem into education is nascent. Research on VR/AR in Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 (PK-12) education has been focused on the technologies' effect on learning in various use cases. This study, grounded in Diffusion of Innovations theory (Rogers, 2003), uses a phenomenological qualitative research approach through interviews to understand the lived experiences and perceptions of pioneer teachers who have used VR/AR with PK-12 students. Critical trends and emergent themes within this study regarding pioneer teacher experiences of VR/AR adoption and integration surfaced through an inductive data analysis process. The introductory experiences …

Finally, it presents a way to teach East Asian history actually from an East …
Intellectual Access And Spirituality: The Twin Urgencies Of Responsible American Education, Matthew Schmitz
Intellectual Access And Spirituality: The Twin Urgencies Of Responsible American Education, Matthew Schmitz
Educational Studies Honors Papers
America is increasingly, and perhaps overwhelmingly, becoming a society characterized by political divisiveness. At its most extreme form, Hannah Arendt argues such a division can make us vulnerable to a loneliness that destroys our confidence and leaves us dependent on ideologies. A renewed sense of spirituality and intellect are prime candidates for helping us develop a healthy relationship with ourselves that can help counteract this loneliness. Not only that, but fully accessing our intellectual and spiritual sides can give us the confidence to tackle democratic republican citizenship the way Thomas Jefferson envisioned it. Here, Jacques Rancière helps us to construct …

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects
The doctoral capstone I participated in for my entry-level Doctor of Occupational Therapy program was in a focus area of education with a mentor who was a professor in a master’s program. I supported my mentor in her role as a professor of a physical dysfunction intervention course and had the opportunity to present a module to students on wheelchair seating interventions. Using experience gained during my capstone as well as information learned during the review of literature, I created a guide for OTs interested in making the transition into academia to meet the capstone project requirement.

As school districts across the nation continuously struggle to retain high-quality, effective teachers, a closer look into teacher efficacy and job satisfaction was warranted (Ingersoll et al., 2018; Sutters & Savage, 2016). The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among novice elementary teachers’ efficacy, instructional support, and job satisfaction in their first through fifth years of teaching. Five hundred sixteen Missouri public school districts were invited to participate in the study, and 48 school districts participated. The instrumentation for this study included the Teacher’s Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES), the Leadership Coaching Competencies Inventory, and the Job …

Effects Of Palliative Care On Nurses’ Knowledge And Attitudes, Daniel Kerr
MSN Capstone Projects
Heart failure (HF) is a chronic, progressive disease that affects 6 million Americans (Ng & Wong, 2017). During the course of the disease, patients have worsening symptoms and need increasing levels of care from both medical staff and home caregivers. Often, these caregivers are family members or friends who spend a significant amount of their free time assisting the patient, leading to significant stress and burden on the caregivers. Recent changes in recommendations from the American Heart Association (AHA) include Palliative Care (PC) consultation for patients diagnosed with advanced stage heart failure, but many physicians have not included a PC …

This paper discusses the idea of using a multi narrative approach to teaching social studies and focuses on a presentation meant to bring about change among teachers. The presentation used to present at the Ohio Council for Social Studies Annual Conference in October of 2020 brings this concept to the forefront and provides practical ways in which teachers can implement this approach when teaching history. A multi-narrative approach focuses on combining and using multiple sources from multiple perspectives with the intention of creating a more inclusive story of how events played out. The typical way in which history is taught …

Racial-Ethnic Disparities In Educational Attainment Among Adults With Intellectual Disability, Erin Bisesti
Population Health Research Brief Series
Racial-ethnic minorities with intellectual disability experience compound disadvantage because of the intersection of their disability and racial minority group status. This research brief examines whether birth cohort trends (from the early-1900s to late-1990s) in educational attainment among adults with intellectual disability differed among non-Hispanic Whites, non-Hispanic Blacks, and Hispanics. Results show that although all racial-ethnic groups saw a substantial increase in the probability of attaining a high school degree or more over subsequent birth cohorts, the timing and amount of education attained varied across racial-ethnic groups.

Title Ix Administers A Booster Shot: The Effect Of Private Donations On Title Ix, Charlotte Franklin
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in federally funded education programs or activities. Since its enactment, Title IX has dramatically increased interscholastic and intercollegiate athletic opportunities for women and girls. Despite indisputable progress since Title IX’s enactment, particularly for female athletes, many high schools and universities still fail to offer equal athletic opportunities for members of both sexes. Inadequate educational resources for high school and university athletic department administrators leads to a misunderstanding of Title IX’s requirements. This misunderstanding results in institutional misconduct and non-compliance with Title IX. In …

This manual and paper explore the question of how educators can heighten their awareness of body language, facial expression, and eye gaze to better understand their student’s levels of engagement. Through the examination of pre-existing research in the fields of education and neuroscience, this paper identifies physical signals that may indicate a student’s cognitive engagement in the classroom. A manual has been created in order to further educate future and current educators on these factors with limitations and a need to further research on the topic.
