Intelligence And Creativity In The Space-Time Continuum For Education, Business, And Development, Giovanni Emanuele Corazza, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Ronald A. Beghetto, Todd Lubart

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this paper, we address the relationship between the intelligence and creativity constructs, by providing equal-level definitions and a parsimonious description of context, allowing the identification of situations in which either one or the other construct prevails, as well as situations in which they overlap and collaborate. The description of context is performed by introducing the metaphor of the space-time continuum, crossing the dimensions of conceptual space S and available time span T, each one varying in continuity from extreme tightness to extreme looseness. The usefulness of the space-time continuum is not limited to the pure comparison between intelligence and …

An Invitation To Imagine Education Otherwise, Grasilel Esperanza Diaz

Occasional Paper Series

This article presents an invitation to imagine education otherwise, what education could be if we took a restorative justice approach and make immediate changes. It focuses on the changes needed to make this vision a reality. You are invited to imagine schools as sites of justice and freedom, to think of teaching that is centered on children, caring, and building relationships with families.

Eight Basic Literacies For Librarians: A New Normal Agenda For Librarianship Education, Lorri Mon

New Librarianship Symposia Series: Fall 2021

Proposal Abstract: A New Normal Agenda in a COVID-Affected World

During the COVID-19 pandemic, libraries became a vital community support hub for information and broadband access. In March 2020 as K-12 schools and universities shifted to all-online classes, librarians taught people to use technologies, provided wireless hubs for classes and homework to those lacking home broadband digital access, and offered distance education test proctoring as well as online books, articles and databases. People sought information about sewing masks and making homemade hand sanitizer, and some library makerspaces 3-D printed face shields. Libraries partnered in health efforts to distribute free masks, …

The Privatization Movement Is Not Dead! A Book Review Of A Wolf At The Schoolhouse Door: The Dismantling Of Public Education And The Future Of School, Jeffrey Frenkiewich

Democracy & Education

In January of 2020, Diane Ravitch published Slaying Goliath, in which she claimed the movement to privatize America’s public school system was dying. While this might be true, the movement is not dead, and this review looks at Jack Schneider and Jennifer Berkshire’s A Wolf at the Schoolhouse Door, which examines the history of school privatization and calls for renewed vigilance by those who oppose it. Schneider and Berkshire argued that defenders of public education need three conceptual frames to fight privatization efforts: (a) a clear presentation of the aims and objectives of the privatization movement; (b) knowledge of the …

This review explores the discourse between theory and practice put forth in Cara E. Furman and Cecelia E. Traugh's Descriptive Inquiry in Teacher Practice: Cultivating Practical Wisdom to Create Democratic Schools. Through the practice of descriptive inquiry, these two authors engage in a lively examination of schools and educators developing individualized democratic practices. This review explores the engaging conversations between schools, educators, and school communities as they learn to center their democratic teaching on human dignity, and a focus on practical wisdom.

Middle School Mathematics Teachers’ Efforts To Foster Classroom Democracies. A Response To "Creating A Democratic Mathematics Classroom", Amanda Jansen, Lorianne Kalb, Denise Mccunney Oct 2021

Middle School Mathematics Teachers’ Efforts To Foster Classroom Democracies. A Response To "Creating A Democratic Mathematics Classroom", Amanda Jansen, Lorianne Kalb, Denise Mccunney

Democracy & Education

How can middle school mathematics teachers navigate their roles as authorities in managing classroom democracies while providing their students with opportunities to exercise their rights? The concept of complementarity (Vithal, 1999) acknowledges that a teacher’s authority is not always in conflict with students’ rights or agency, but instead a teacher’s authority can be exercised judiciously to invite students to enact their rights. In this response to “Creating Democratic Mathematics Classrooms,” we take up the authors’ invitation to reflect on how we consider the role of responsibilities in classrooms that promote Torres’s Rights of the Learner. We share ways that two …

Active Shooter In The Education Setting, Clinton Seal, Drew A. Wells Oct 2021

Active Shooter In The Education Setting, Clinton Seal, Drew A. Wells

Doctoral Projects

Active shooter incidents are increasing steadily and continue to pose a tremendous public safety problem, especially in the educational setting. In addition, the majority of faculty and students remain uncertain of exactly what actions to take if an active shooter event occurs on campus. The lack of education, awareness and policy drills can inadequately prepare students, faculty, and staff for an active shooter event. The recognition of this inadequacy has prompted further investigation by The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Nurse Anesthesia Program as it relates to Asbury Hall. An anonymous survey was sent to current students enrolled in the …

Adolescent Girls And Covid-19: Mapping The Evidence On Interventions, Sarah Blake, Miriam Temin, Tara Abularrage, Nihal Said

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

With the COVID-19 crisis continuing to evolve, evidence on the effectiveness of short-term emergency-oriented responses and long-term mitigation strategies is expanding but still limited. There are, and will continue to be, substantial evidence gaps on programming to address risk across outcomes of importance to adolescent girls. More evidence is needed to slow the risks posed by the pandemic for this subpopulation, which can help guide gender- and age-responsive prevention and impact mitigation investments. Evidence from approaches delivered in other unstable contexts may offer important lessons for decision-making in the current context. Recognizing this, the Population Council conducted a structured review …

Impact Of The Internet On Library Use: Case Study Of Technical Diploma Colleges In Goa., Vijaya V. Sawant Mrs., Pravin V. Kamat Mr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The Internet plays an essential part in bringing about digital revolution in Libraries. However, over the years there is disagreement as to whether it is beneficial to uplift the status of libraries using digital technologies or whether these technologies will eventually replace libraries. Internet is a useful tool, but it is not a substitute. Internet is not digital library. This research paper aims to investigate the influence of Internet on library usage and determine if Internet has lowered library gate counts or increased them. This research is also being carried out to see whether library professionals believe that development of …

Using Of Modern Teaching Methods For Professional Formation Of Medical Students, Patima B. Tashkhodjaeva, Uktam D. Esanov, Abdunazar Kh. Juraev, Mekhridin N. Aslanov

Central Asian Journal of Medicine

In recent years, there has been more emphasis on developing critical thinking (e.g., critical thinking and clinical reasoning) processes to tackle the recent trends and challenges in medical education in Uzbekistan. Critical thinking in professional formation teaches tomorrow’s doctors to be well trained. Lack of training of critical thinking in medical English curricula causes medical students to use cognitive biases in problem solving which ultimately leads to use professional practice. There is no consensus on the most effective-teaching model to teach the critical thinking skills is not effectively tested in medical schools of Uzbekistan. This chapter will focus on analysis …

A Curriculum Model For Multidisciplinary Training Of Midwife Sonographers In A Low Resource Setting, Sudhir Vinayak, Marleen Temmerman, Geert Villeirs, Sharon M. Brownie

Imaging & Diagnostic Radiology, East Africa

In many low-resource settings, less than 5% of pregnant women can access ultrasound during pregnancy. Thus, gestational age is often difficult to determine, multiple pregnancies are diagnosed late and foetal and pregnancy-related anomalies can go undetected. A pilot solution was designed beyond the traditional approach of increasing numbers of qualified radiologists, gynaecologists and sonographers. An innovative Human Resource for Health (HRH) task sharing, and maternal child health (MCH) workforce training and capacity building initiative was designed, involving development and testing of a curriculum to train midwife sonographers via a teleradiology innovation platform and a partnership between specialist radiologists, sonographers and …

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was once heralded as a beacon of feminist power on television in a sea of one-dimensional wives, girlfriends, and supporting characters. Joss Whedon, its creator, has been hailed as a feminist icon and a lifesaver of kids and adults struggling with being different (Cochran). “Geeks love Joss Whedon” according to a 2012 Wired article: “His characters are smart and self-aware. He’s steeped in pop culture and has a clever way with twists and turns of science fiction tropes […] plus, he writes female character who kick ass, which makes him so rare as to be sui …
