Birth Outcomes For Hispanic Women In South Carolina, Reilly Leaver
Birth Outcomes For Hispanic Women In South Carolina, Reilly Leaver
Senior Theses
The United States maintains disproportionately high infant mortality rates compared to other developed countries globally (Arima et al., 2009). High barriers to accessing affordable reproductive health care are key drivers behind this phenomenon, with minority ethnic and racial populations in the Deep South region of the United States facing these barriers at much higher rates than their white counterparts (Davis et al., 2020). Factors such as low levels of education, low use of private health insurance, and low participation in prenatal care generally correlate with adverse birth outcomes. Both Hispanic and Black mothers experience these factors at similarly low levels, …

The Presbyterian Exception? The Illegal Education Of Enslaved Blacks By South Carolina Presbyterian Churches, 1834-1865, Margaret Bates
Theses and Dissertations
The study of literacy among enslaved people in South Carolina is often limited to legal literature, enslaver and enslaved autobiographies, and Northern accounts of education from teachers sent to the South. The use of these types of sources to describe literacy and education of enslaved people leaves out a major contributor to the enslaved literacy movement, the churches. Using documentation from two Presbyterian churches in South Carolina, this thesis expands upon the enslaved literacy movements in South Carolina to look at the roles ministers, missionaries, and congregations played in teaching enslaved blacks how to read religious literature, why these institutions …

Faculty Scholarship
In the fall of 2020, students entered law school under extreme circumstances. The COVID-19 pandemic led to isolation, depression, and restrictions on activities. A new hybrid learning environment was created. Social upheaval also caused unease. The 2020 national elections loomed, bringing divisive political discourse. The murder of George Floyd and other BIPOC, at the hands of police, led to a reckoning around the country. Additionally, with the COVID-19 pandemic came a rash of anti-Asian violence.
Faced with these unprecedented realities, we, as legal educators, struggled with how to adapt our curriculum to this new normal. These realities forced us to …

How Early Education And Pet Therapy May Help Nurses With Compassion Fatigue, Katie E. Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
Although there is a great deal of research on the causes of compassion fatigue, there is little research on prevention techniques or ways to combat compassion fatigue. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to discover if nurses are prepared to cope with occupational stress and compassion fatigue. A secondary purpose was to examine the perceived benefit that pet therapy can have as a possible stress reduction technique to decrease the effects of compassion fatigue. This research was conducted by gathering data via semistructured interviews. The researcher interviewed nurses who were currently practicing patient care and scored as …

The Fence, Lashaundra S. Tyler
The Fence, Lashaundra S. Tyler
Theses and Dissertations
Historically, Standard American English (SAE) has been seen as superior to African American Vernacular English (AAVE), but both languages can be used interchangeably through the linguistic practice of code-switching. Code-switching pedagogies have been used to more effectively teach elementary students SAE while building on their knowledge of AAVE. Additionally, games have been inserted into the classroom to extend traditional English-language learning, which allows students to embody the language-learning experience in a setting with lower stakes and reduced judgment. Combining code-switching pedagogy with game-based learning, my game The Fence can be used in the classroom and at home to teach children …
The Mitigation Of In-Group And Outgroup Biases: Understanding The Perceptions Of Educators On The Contact Approach Theory, Brigitte Blazys
The Mitigation Of In-Group And Outgroup Biases: Understanding The Perceptions Of Educators On The Contact Approach Theory, Brigitte Blazys
Dissertations
The contact approach theory was introduced in the 1950s, by Allport, as a method to mitigate biases. Since then, many DEI practitioners in the United States have formed alliances to create a social justice movement to combat racism, prejudice, and biases in our society. Nevertheless, little research has been conducted in the contact approach theory as these biases, initially observed as in-group and outgroup biases, originate in the early years of life. To begin to fill this gap in the literature, the purpose of this study was to better understand and identify to what extent, if any, prekindergarten through third …

Classroom Practices Of Urban High School Teacher’S Pedagogy Strategies And Approaches For Preparing African American Students For College, Leah Hansberry
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative case study of ten urban high school teachers' classroom practices in terms of pedagogical strategies and curriculum development approaches for college preparation of African American students. Arkansas released a High School-to-College Success Report in 2012 to assess how well high schools prepared students for post-secondary success. There is a dearth of research on urban high school teachers' perspectives on pedagogy strategies for college preparation of African American students. The theoretical framework for this study was derived from Dunkin and Biddle's (1974) Curriculum Model. The overarching research question guided this study: …

Mirrors To The Soul: Elementary Preservice Teachers’ Critical Reflections Of Situating Race, Racism, And Antiracism Within The Literacy Curriculum, Marian Cunningham
Theses and Dissertations
Research that engages preservice teachers in critical reflective practices may reveal the level at which they understand and confront their own biases when addressing race within the institutions and societies they interact. This study was conducted to understand the depth in which elementary preservice teachers critically reflect on their own racialized experiences and beliefs and how they situate race within the literacy curriculum through the lens of critical race theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 preservice teachers. Findings indicated that preservice teachers believe antiracist themes should be integrated into literacy. However, due to lack of exposure, limited coursework, and …

Action Research: Hand Signals' Impact On Student Mindset And Performance, Katelyn Niehaus
Honors Projects
Hand signal use as a form of alternate mode of communication in the classroom offers potential for developing a growth mindset in students and, by this, improving student performance. This paper explores the work already done on various response systems. Research shows response systems typically accomplish their intended goal, and may help students to develop a growth mindset. Additionally, development of a growth mindset is associated with improvement in student performance. The action research discussed in this paper shows there may be an increase in growth mindset as a result of hand signal use in the classroom.

This addition to the Alphabet series about the letter G is great. Each two-page spread features a simple sentence with an abundance of the letter G, and each usage is clearly highlighted in a bold font. On the corresponding page is a full-page photograph showing what the sentence is describing. For example, “Gia gives Grandma a great big hug” shows a girl with her arms around her grandmother as they peel potatoes in the kitchen. There are nine sentence-photograph pairs, as well as additional G words and a glossary included at the end.

Pedagogical and educational institutions play an important role in health education. The proposed systemic principles should account for biological, environmental and cultural factors that determine the health of children and adolescents. Young people’s individual needs should constitute the framework of educational policy in the prevention of obesity and overweight. An analysis of health education practice in the Polish educational system indicates that the adopted measures, their practical applications and educational goals are adequate. Despite the above, the proposed systemic solutions are not always deployed or correctly implemented by the responsible institutions at various levels of local or social governance. The …
