A Socially Innovative Curriculum For An Afterschool Program, Shelinda T. Knight Davenport

Masters Projects

ABSTRACT

Since the colonial days in what is now known as America, there has been the social problem of racism. Racism has always been and remains a cancer in America’s culture. From racism, a deep hatred has spawned for other races. To the extremes, it has led to violence and murder, and most Americans believe it is more prevalently outspoken today than it has been in the last 20 years (Schaefer & Edwards, 2022). This thesis project consists of a Disrupting Racism curriculum for approximately 3rd grade, which is situated in the literature on racism and education. Grounded in culturally …

Education In The Emergency Department For Cardiac Conditions, Shelby Thomason

Nursing | Student Research Posters

In the United States 610,000 people die every year from coronary artery disease which equates to 1 in 4 deaths. Inequity in access to healthcare is a persistent issue that impact patient outcomes. Tracking adherence and patient outcomes can be challenging, especially for patients who may not have access to necessary resources or support. Nurses are often overworked and have limited time to provide in-depth education. Patients and their families often struggle to afford caregivers or other resources that can help manage these chronic cardiac conditions.

Mathematics Education In The United States Of America, Finland, And Singapore: A Comparative Study, Bethany C. Pomponi

Kean Quest

Education systems around the world must put quality instruction as a priority, even as society constantly changes. Countries have to put a bigger emphasis on the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in their schools as the years have progressed. Those who have a career in the STEM areas are an integral part of sustaining a country’s economy. However, not every country does the best job in teaching STEM effectively and appropriately to students. Although countries around the world teach mathematics, each one has a different approach, as seen with scores from PISA and TIMMS regarding The …

Antibiotic Over Prescription For Upper Respiratory Tract Infections, Amina Boudaia Apr 2023

Antibiotic Over Prescription For Upper Respiratory Tract Infections, Amina Boudaia

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Antibiotic overuse is a major contributor to antibiotic resistance that is estimated to be responsible for 23,000 deaths annually in the United States (Durante et al., 2017; Garcia et al., 2016). Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are speculated to be a leading contributor to the overprescribing of antibiotics (Aplin-Snider et al., 2020). The purpose of this project was to address the PICOT question: Does the implementation of patient education posters and protocol plus online training modules for providers (I) over an 8-week period or 30 patient charts (T) help to decrease antibiotic overprescription (O) in upper respiratory tract infections (P) …

Implementing Nurse-Specialist-Delivered-Education To Improve Application Compliance Of Ordered Intermittent Pneumatic Compression, Mitchel R. Perry

MSN Capstone Projects

Healthcare-associated (HA) venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the formation of a potentially deadly blood clot that can occur in patients as a result of hospitalization, surgery, procedures, etc. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022a). HA-VTE is the number one most preventable cause of death in hospitals. The organization at which this author is associated experienced 48 VTE events during the first six months of 2020 (Mainer, 2020). Over 50% of these events demonstrate a lack of appropriate physical or mechanical VTE prophylaxis application per provider order, including sequential compression devices (SCD). The use of intermittent pneumatic compression devices (IPCD) (i.e., …

The History And Significance Of Taxidermy Bird Collections In North America: Bgsu's Own Undervalued Collection And Its Future, Kristin Burnside

Honors Projects

Taxidermy, despite its association with the bizarre and outlandish, has a rich history and culture that helped to define post-Civil War America and its pursuit of knowledge and reconnection with nature. With the widespread publication and availability of how-to guides, natural history collecting and taxidermy became accessible to any individual regardless of age, gender, or class. The hobby required physicality and courage to collect unique and interesting specimens, and intellect and creativity to conserve and display them, all of which inherently connected the avocation with respect. With varying levels of success, hobbyists experimented with different chemicals, such as arsenic, in …

Progressive Education In C. S. Lewis's Prince Caspian, Voyage Of The Dawn Treader, And The Silver Chair: Narnia As A Remedy To The Green Book, Megan Marie Johnson Apr 2023

Progressive Education In C. S. Lewis's Prince Caspian, Voyage Of The Dawn Treader, And The Silver Chair: Narnia As A Remedy To The Green Book, Megan Marie Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Recent scholarship has taken an interest in C. S. Lewis's political views and how they are manifested in his fiction. However, few have thoroughly analyzed the specific political implications of his children's series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Part of this may be because Lewis himself insisted his fiction was nonpartisan. The heavily religious allegories in the series can also overshadow the political commentary. This thesis contributes to the growing discourse on political commentary in Lewis's fiction by identifying four concerns he had with progressive education and then demonstrating how he criticizes them in Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn …

Teach-Back Education In Heart Failure Patients Benchmark Study, Bethany N. Johnson Apr 2023

Teach-Back Education In Heart Failure Patients Benchmark Study, Bethany N. Johnson

MSN Capstone Projects

Heart failure exasperation is one of the most common causes of hospital readmission in the United States (Breathett et al., 2018). It is estimated that greater than half of all heart failure patients will be readmitted to the hospital within six months of discharge (Caluya, 2021). Additionally, one in four individuals with heart failure are readmitted within thirty days of discharge (Rahmani et al., 2020). This data shows a large area of improvement for hospitals in order to improve patient outcomes. Due to the lack of standardized discharge teaching, heart failure patients are often admitted to the hospital for the …

Educational Modules Promoting Neurodiversity-Affirming Sensory Interventions, Deanna Bourgeois, Mary Smith, Gina Benavente

Spring 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Neurodivergent children often experience differences in sensory processing and self-regulation. Traditional sensory-based interventions are frequently used by occupational therapy practitioners (OTP) and caregivers to address dysregulation. Sensory-based interventions are strengths-based but not always neurodiversity-affirming. There are few educational resources available that promote neurodiversity-affirming sensory interventions.

The purpose of this project was to create self-paced educational modules to teach neurodiversity-affirming sensory interventions promoting children's self-regulation. The student investigator developed virtual educational modules and piloted them with OTP, occupational therapy students, and caregivers during the capstone experience. The participants engaged with the modules and also submitted responses to pre-and post-surveys. Based on …

Building Capacity In The Law Of The Sea: The Imo International Maritime Law Institute’S Experience, Ángeles Jiménez García-Carriazo

International Law Studies

Although the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) does not make any express reference to capacity-building, scientific and technological development is a centerpiece of the Convention. In 1982, UNCLOS established a comprehensive legal framework for ocean-related activities with a latent and inexorable link to capacity-building through the transfer of technology, scientific and technical assistance, knowledge sharing, and cooperation and collaboration. Building capacity in the law of the sea enables States to benefit from the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans and seas and their resources. In the absence of expertise to incorporate and effectively implement …

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore and describe pastors’ experiences who have served full-time in a lead/senior pastor role in evangelical churches after having lost or left their employment as a result of experiencing poor person-organization fit. For this study, pastoral staff turnover was defined as the employment of full-time pastoral staff employed for at least one year who have resulted in voluntary or involuntary resignation from their place of employment because of value incongruence. In this phenomenology, the church is viewed as an educational institution, including similarities between pastoral roles and educator and administrator roles. As …

Teacher Shortages And The Fundamental Right To Education In California, Chris Yarrell Apr 2023

Teacher Shortages And The Fundamental Right To Education In California, Chris Yarrell

Pepperdine Law Review

That a qualified teacher workforce functions as the most important factor affecting student learning and achievement is beyond dispute. Yet, the right to education—which is a state obligation codified within all fifty 50 state constitutions—has been vindicated largely within the province of school finance litigation. Indeed, for nearly five decades, education litigants have brought school finance disputes in virtually every state, succeeding in more than half of them. Despite the hard-won victories notched by education litigants over this time, however, courts adjudicating school finance disputes have largely failed to move beyond declaring simple proscriptions on facially unequal school funding regimes. …
