A concise statement of the problem of the thesis is “To discover the Free Reading Interests of Seventh and Eighth Grade Boys and Girls.” More specifically the study is for the purpose of discovering the amount, the character, and nature of the voluntary reading done by seventh and eighth grade pupils now enrolled in the public schools of Hays, Kansas. By "Free reading" is meant that which the pupil does because of his own volition rather than that done because of suggestions made by the teacher.

The purpose of this study is to present a clear and accurate history of education in Middlesex County from 1669 to 1891. The account is complete in so far as available material has made it possible.

The material presented in this thesis is an original investigation in that the information was secured, largely, from primary sources.
