Weekday Religious Instruction In The Public Schools Of Omaha, Nebraska, Eckhardt W. Scheer

The investigation to be reported was undertaken in an effort to determine why the release-time religious education in the Omaha public schools through so-called Weekday Church Schools was discontinued after one year of operation. The promoters of the project reported that hardly a more favorable situation for Weekday Church Schools could have been found and yet it had to be abandoned because of lack of funds.

The trend toward the increased use of talking moving pictures in the classroom has slowly been gaining favor among Omaha teachers. At first "the Depression," with its lack of funds, put a serious obstacle in the way. Then World War II made it impossible to buy the necessary equipment. But now a broad visual education program has been planned for the Omaha Public Schools. Some schools are buying their own equipment. Askerben has just announced the gift of twelve projectors with sound equipment and screens. A central film library, from which schools may borrow films, has been started.

Which is ''the American way" for the religious training of American children? According to Dr. C.H. Moehlman, Professor of the History of Christianity at the Colgate-Rochester Divinity School, the American way is a different one from that pursued in Christian parochial schools. It is different, too, from the plan of "various religious groups" who "are conducting a vigorous propaganda for the return of the formal teaching of religion to the public classroom" (p. ix).
