Brecker, Andrea, Sophia Maier Garcia
Bronx Jewish History Project
Andrea Brecker’s maternal grandmother came to the United States from Russia in the late 1800s, marrying on the Lower East Side. The family had been kosher butchers in the old world, and continued the tradition on the Lower East Side and when they moved to the Bronx. Her paternal family also escaped the Tsar and came to the United States in the early 1900s, moving to the East Bronx. Her grandfather was an ironworker, who helped in the construction of Temple Emanu-El. Brecker’s father was a house painter, and supported the family on a modest income on Davidson Avenue between …

Technology-Based Training With Social Work Students To Enhance Suicide Risk Assessment Skills During Covid-19, Warren L. Miller Jr, Aswood Bousseau, Jesse Capece, Jayashree Nimmagadda
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
The global COVID-19 pandemic has touched every aspect of human life. It has exacerbated how students continue to learn during a global health crisis. Specifically, training students to address mental health challenges (i.e., suicide assessments) during and post-COVID-19 is of the utmost importance. Previous research shows higher education institutions' responses to adjusting to previous world health crises, yet little is known about social work programs pivoting to technology-based training to educate BSW and MSW students to continue serving vulnerable populations in their field practicum during COVID-19. In this study, using the competencies attainment survey, the researchers at an east coast …

The Negotiation Of Emotions: Teachers’ Emotional Expression Management In The Ela Classroom, Erika Watts
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study builds on the concept of teacher emotion management in the classroom, with a specific focus on the English Language Arts (ELA) classroom where emotions play a heavy role in texts and the content taught. I analyzed the perspectives of five current English Language Arts (ELA) teachers using an interview study to ask how they describe their emotions during an emotionally challenging moment in the ELA classroom. Through the narratives they shared, I also explored their perceptions of professionally unacceptable emotions and how they make sense of their experiences navigating those emotions. I used a thematic analysis to conclude …
Efficiency And Distributional Effects Of Federal College Subsidies During The Great Depression, Gerald Jaynes, Alexander B. Kane
Efficiency And Distributional Effects Of Federal College Subsidies During The Great Depression, Gerald Jaynes, Alexander B. Kane
Discussion Papers
We conduct the first quantitative assessment of federal college subsidies during the 1930s. Overlapping generation households invest in children’s education to maximize multigenerational utility, and the government subsidizes college to maximize enrollment subject to a budget constraint and recipients satisfying ability and income qualifications. A modelling innovation assigns children educational ability through a random regression to the population mean correlated with father’s presumed ability ranking via his percentile in fathers’ earnings distribution. Simulating the theoretical model, the equilibrium that replicates actual education distributions estimates federal college subsidies increased graduation rates of the cohort of White Americans reaching college age during …

Social Movements, Deliberation, And Educational Governance. A Response To “Pragmatist Thinking For A Populist Moment”, Ellis Reid
Democracy & Education
In this response essay, the author provides an account of the role of social movements in a democracy as part of a larger argument about democratic school governance. Focusing on Black Lives Matter (BLM), the author contends that social movements like BLM support a vibrant and legitimate democracy because they constitute vital nodes in the ongoing, norm-governed conversation that constitutes democratic politics. To make this argument, the author defends an account of democratic deliberation that recognizes (1) the contribution of emotion to our capacity for reason and (2) the fact that deliberation extends beyond the confines of official democratic fora. …
Beyond Just Techniques: Toward Deliberation Facilitation That Minimizes Harm. A Response To “Deliberative Facilitation In The Classroom: The Interplay Of Facilitative Technique And Design To Make Space For Democracy”, Wayne Journell
Democracy & Education
In "Deliberative Facilitation in the Classroom: The Interplay of Facilitative Techniques and Design to Make Space for Democracy," the authors offered several useful techniques for the facilitation of standard classroom deliberations. However, not all open controversial issues are created equal, and many have the potential to implicate student identities. In those cases, it is imperative that facilitators move beyond basic techniques and think about how to conduct deliberations that protect marginalized students and do not validate systemic injustices. In this response to "Deliberative Facilitation in the Classroom," I extend upon the authors' argument and offer suggestions for how to effectively …

Land Education And Young People Working Toward Salamander: Collective Well-Being In Response To Bioindicators Of Socioenvironmental Justice, Rachael Arens, Ricardo Martinez
Democracy & Education
Our planet is facing many environmental challenges, including climate change, loss of biodiversity and habitat, and pollution, while many of our populations are also experiencing marginalization due to poverty, race, gender, language, ability, and environmental injustices. Environmental hazards and policies often impact those in society who are most at-risk, creating a need for an environmental education (EE) movement that encourages students to challenge and regain control of a system that impacts them. Teachers can implement a reflection tool known as the SALAMANDER Collective Well-Being in Response to Bioindicators of Socioenvironmental Justice Framework to prompt students and other educators to place …

Application Of A Model Of Family-Centered Harm Reduction In Community-Based Programming, Johnna Belkiewitz, Victoria G. Wilburn, Sydney Larson, Kate Schrader
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Coupling high substance use disorder rates with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, our nation faces a growing mental health crisis and a shortage of adequately trained mental and behavioral health providers. As occupational therapists work toward recognition as qualified providers in this practice area, we must ensure that future therapists can meet client needs. Traditional mental and behavioral health educational practices in occupational therapy use a model of harm reduction that minimizes negative outcomes for a select subset of the population engaging in specific “high-risk” behaviors, such as individuals engaging in substance use and sexual activity. Expanding our understanding …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Educated and trained workers represent the primary critical success factor needed for all organizations to achieve their mission. Organizations depend on a constant flow of educated applicants competing for their jobs at any given time. Traditionally, public, private, and charter schools prepared U.S. citizens for college, trade schools, military, or university, enabling them to then compete successfully for jobs of the era. Today, a myriad of problems face these schools, including disruptive change, uninvolved parents, lack for funding, teacher unions, politics, school overcrowding, COVID-19, outdated training methods, security, race issues, and more. The result is that this education model is …
