An Assessment Of Three Programmed Reading Courses For Use By The Mentally Retarded, Ruth P. Palmer
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Their problems in this area are directly related to their comparative difficulty in handling abstractions, developing generalizations, and in expanding concepts.(Goldstein, 1962). The ability to read is of vital importance to the educable mentally retarded child and is needed to help him move about in his environment safely and independently. In our culture the ability to read is a must for employment. Next to the acquisition of adequate language to satisfy social needs, reading should hold top priority in the list of tool subjects for the mentally retarded.

the job of the school board is to provide all children in its district with an education that meets their needs and those of society. It is never easy to do and becomes more difficult with the rapid growth of knowledge and the increasing complexity of the modern world. Education cannot stand still in the face of exploding knowledge, increasing dependence on science and technology, almost instant communication throughout a shrinking world, and the rise of new ideas and experimental methods of instruction. The school board must be alert to the changing situation and grow with it.

This investigation was an attempt to consider these factors in the elementary schools of one particular school district.
