A Comparison Of The Career Assessment Inventory And The Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory In A Minority, High School Drop-Out Sample, David Stanton Halferty
A Comparison Of The Career Assessment Inventory And The Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory In A Minority, High School Drop-Out Sample, David Stanton Halferty
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Problem. The Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory (SCII), an inventory with some validity, was directed at the professionally oriented client. The Career Assessment Inventory (CAI) appeared in 1976 as an inventory normed on the non-professional, blue-collar worker, directed at the non-baccalaureate student. There had been little research on minority, non-college oriented youth. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to compare the predictive and concurrent validity of these two inventories for a drop-out, non-college oriented population. These inventories were compared for predictive validity to short-term occupational outcome, and for concurrent validity to Expressed Interest. Also, the distribution of interests across the six …
Utilization Of Puppetry As A Means Of Enhancing Communication Through Oral Language And Attention To Task., Ida Marlene Cary Adams
Utilization Of Puppetry As A Means Of Enhancing Communication Through Oral Language And Attention To Task., Ida Marlene Cary Adams
Student Work
In order for children to effectively participate in learning, their attention must be acquired and maintained. Teachers need to evaluate as many alternative educational means as possible to accomplish this result. The knowledge and encouragement of communication are also of paramount importance in the classroom. Puppets can be viewed as one audio-visual method for effectively progressing toward these goals. It has been suggested that puppets are capable of commanding attention and promoting communication through, not only their versatility, but also their ability to cross age and racial barriers. Thus, puppetry has .been viewed as a communicative tool throughout history.
The Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Mastery Learning, Whole Group Pacing For Reading Instruction In The Clarkson Elementary School, Larry R. Goodenough
The Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Mastery Learning, Whole Group Pacing For Reading Instruction In The Clarkson Elementary School, Larry R. Goodenough
Student Work
The teaching of reading to elementary students is a very important task for teachers. Children enter school with a wide range of abilities and potentials. The child's experience in language building activities can play a significant role in that child's success in reading. Schools are challenged to receive all children as they are and develop reading skills through an articulated K-6 curriculum so as to provide all children with the ability to perform successfully in the academic areas of the secondary school.

An Examination Of Sense Of Story In Proficient Bilingual, Partial Bilingual, And Monolingual Children As Evidenced In Stories Told In English, Kathleen Kenfield
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to determine what differences, if any, existed among monolingual (English) children, partial bilingual (English-Spanish) children, and proficient bilingual (English-Spanish) children in the level of sophistication of their sense of story. Sense of story was defined as the degree to which one has internalized the features, conventions, and structures of the story genre. Sense of story was analyzed in three areas: structural complexity (number of words, number of T-units, mean length of T-units, number of characters, number of incidents), story convention usage (use of past tense, formal beginning, formal ending, use of quoted and described …

Spatial Visualization, Attitudes Toward Mathematics, And Mathematics Achievement Among Chinese-American, Hispanic-American, And Caucasian Seventh And Eighth Grade Students, Wenfu Shieh
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Many studies have shown that spatial visualization and attitudes toward mathematics are positively and significantly correlated to achievement in mathematics. This study attempted to find out whether these relationships remain consistent across various ethnic groups. This study also attempted to ascertain if spatial visualization ability and attitudes toward mathematics vary among ethnic groups, and if these possible variabilities correspond to the different degrees of mathematical achievement. One hundred five 7th and 8th grade Caucasian, Chinese-American, and Hispanic-American students were selected from three of the five middle schools in the Stockton Unified School District to participate in this study. The DAT …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
More than a decade has passed since the United States Supreme Court made its historic decision in Lau v. Nichols on January 21, 1974. Ruling in favor of the non-English-speaking Chinese plaintiffs, the Court upheld earlier guidelines established by the office for Civil Rights for school districts with more than five percent national origin-minority group children. In delivering the Court's opinion, Justice Douglas reiterated these words of J. Stanley Pottinger, former director of OCR:

A Study Of The Influence Of Logo On Locus Of Control, Attitudes Toward Mathematics, And Problem-Solving Ability In Children In Grades 4, 5, 6, Barbara W. Lewinter Edd
Dissertations
This study was designed to determine the influence of the Logo computer environment on locus of control, attitudes toward mathematics, and problem-solving ability. An experimental design was employed to test whether students in grades 4, 5, 6 who studied Logo showed more positive attitudes toward mathematics and scored higher on locus of control measures than a control group. The intact non-equivalent control group design was employed. The experimental group of 174 youngsters studied Logo for 12 weeks. Ninety-eight youngsters comprised the control group. Differences between groups pre and post Logo training were tested using two instruments, "A Study of Attitude …

An alternative to American bureaucratic philosophy of management came to the United States from Japan during the decade of the 1970s. The philosophy of the Japanse style of management was based upon the use of creativity and talent of others, including the following concepts: (1) Everyone is knowledgeable and wants to share and contribute something; (2) Management does not know all the problems; (3) Management does not know all the answers; (4) The employee has his own way of doing something and is closer to the problems; (5) Workers can contribute their ideas for effective problem solving. The problem of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between selected personal characteristics of higher education administrators and their perceived levels of power motivation and power style. The techniques of ex post facto research were used in this study. The Power Management Inventory developed by Jay Hall and James Hawker was selected as the appropriate instrument for use in this study. The Power Management Inventory was designed to provide a comparison between one's espoused theory (power motivation) and one's theory in action (power style). A personal data sheet was used to obtain information concerning the personal characteristics …
Effective Use Of Microcomputers For Elementary Social Studies, Steven Richard Hanks
Effective Use Of Microcomputers For Elementary Social Studies, Steven Richard Hanks
Student Work
The use of computers in the classroom is still a very new development in education. In fact, computers themselves have been around only for about thirty-five years. The incredible growth in the technology of computers is almost impossible to fathom. Modern computers are not only a faster and "smarter," they are smaller and cheaper. Shane (1982) pointed out that if a Rolls Royce had become as cost effective as computers and had its price reduced accordingly, it would cost only three dollars.
