Fordham Law Review
Judge Motley provides an insightful overview of the Brown v. Board of Education decision in an historical context In addition to analyzing several Supreme Court decisions that preceded Brown, Judge Motley focuses on the role of Thurgood Marshall as both a strategist and tactician during this dynamic period in our history. Judge Motley concludes by examining the immediate impact of Brown on the civil rights movement in America.
Symposium: Brown V. Board Of Education And Its Legacy: A Tribute To Justice Thurgood Marshall, Public Law Litigation And The Ambiguties Of Brown, Mark Tushnet
Fordham Law Review
Professor Tushnet posits that the Supreme Court's concern for gradually carrying out desegregation in the public schools ironically gave rise to "'public law litigation"---an aggressive form ofjudicial review. Specifically. Professor Tushnet argues that the "all deliberate speed" standard, which separated the right from the remedy, enabled the courts to become a more powerful institution in shaping social policy. Throughout his speech, Professor Tushnet provides insight into the thought processes of the Supreme Court justices at the time of the Brown decision.
Symposium: Brown V. Board Of Education And Its Legacy: A Tribute To Justice Thurgood Marshall, The Overthrow Of Monroe V. Pape: A Chapter In The Legacy Of Thurgood Marshall, Conrad K. Harper
Fordham Law Review
As the first Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, otherwise known as the "Inc. Fund," Thurgood Marshall helped establish the Inc Fund's tradition of landmark civil rights litigation. Mr. Harper discusses in this article the role played by the Inc Fund and Justice Marshall in overthrowing Monroe v. Pape and its curtailment of civil rights suits against municipalities. The instrument for change was Harkdess v. Sweeny Independent School District, a suit filed on behalf of seventeen Black schoolteachers who were discriminatorily fired by a Texas school district.
Symposium: Brown V. Board Of Education And Its Legacy: A Tribute To Justice Thurgood Marshall, Learning Together: Justice Marshall's Desegregation Opinions, Maria L. Marcus
Fordham Law Review
In this Article, Professor Marcus examines the influence of Justice Thurgood Marshall on the Supreme Court's current school desegregation agenda. Justice Marshall was part of the majority in desegregation cases during his earlier years on the high Court subsequently, however, his role became one of dissenter. Professor Marcus analyzes the divisive issues facing the Court in desegregation litigation, Marshall's positions on such issues, and his legacy to the Court in this area. Finally, the Article assesses the vitality of this legacy in light of two Supreme Court decisions issued after Justice Marshall's retirement.
A Five-Year Trend Analysis Of Attitudes Of Female High School Seniors Toward Post-High School Work And Education Possibilities, Evelyn Ruth Beck
A Five-Year Trend Analysis Of Attitudes Of Female High School Seniors Toward Post-High School Work And Education Possibilities, Evelyn Ruth Beck
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A five year trend analysis of attitudes of female high school seniors toward post-high school work and education possibilities investigates what, if any, trends exist regarding education and work they would be doing at age 30. Correlations between females' post-high school education and work goals and their parents attaining a college degree was studied. The relationship between daughters' education and work goals and the mothers' employment was researched; This study, while not showing a changing trend in the attitudes toward post-high school education, did define solidly the work and educational goals of female high school seniors during the period of …
Investigating The Informational Nature Of A Modeled Visual Demonstration., Britta Gertrud Schoenfelder-Zohdi
Investigating The Informational Nature Of A Modeled Visual Demonstration., Britta Gertrud Schoenfelder-Zohdi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the informational nature of a modeled visual demonstration of slalom-ski type movements performed on a ski simulator. Hypotheses exist suggesting that a model may convey information primarily about movement coordination (Newell, 1985), or movement form (Whiting, 1988), but there is no empirical evidence that this information is used by the learner so that skill acquisition is facilitated. To investigate this information question, three experiments were conducted that replicated and extended a study by Whiting, Bijlard, and den Brinker (1987) by analyzing movement kinematics of subjects in addition to movement outcome. In the first experiment, the expert model's …

Theoretical sampling was used to select 30 high school biology and college zoology students who examined a simulation involving island biogeography. The literature base for the study was scientific reasoning, problem solving, and prescientific conceptions. The research questions were answered using qualitative and quantitative methods. The first research question was: What number and what type of variables would be used to evaluate biological data? The students used 19 categories of variables, and the most frequently used were size, distance, and food. The second research question was: Will students use the controlling variables strategy in this reasoning task? Only four students …
Impact Of The Preservice Field Experience In Foreign Language Teaching: A Study Of The Development Of Preservice Teachers' Perspectives In Foreign Language Teaching. (Volumes I And Ii)., Denise Egea-Kuehne
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Within the broader issue of teacher education, the focus of this study is on one of the most neglected areas of inquiry in the field of foreign languages, the preservice field experience, and the development of student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching. The following questions were specifically addressed: (1) What perspectives of foreign language teaching do student teachers hold upon completion of their program of university courses? (2) Is there an alteration of student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching during their student teaching semester? (3) What factors appear to influence student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching during …
Cultural Studies And The Multicultural Curriculum., Mary Susan Huddleston Edgerton
Cultural Studies And The Multicultural Curriculum., Mary Susan Huddleston Edgerton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although some of the most recent work in the field of multicultural education has acknowledged and begun to theorize about what has been called the new cultural politics of difference, problems concerning the very notions of marginality, boundaries, and their accompanying "essentialist" thought remain undertheorized. It is my intention to bring discussions about marginality and essentialism from literary theory, feminist psychoanalytic theory and poststructuralist philosophy more explicitly into the conversation about multicultural curriculum theorizing. In this study I have attempted to further develop this conversation around notions of "translation" as generated by philosophers Michel Serres (1982) and John Rajchmann (1991) …

A Comparison Of Language And Graphic Products Of Students From Kindergarten Classrooms Differing In Developmental Appropriateness Of Instruction., Jean Germany Mosley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the ways in which kindergartners from more and less developmentally appropriate classrooms negotiate the process of graphic communication. Both quantitative and qualitative aspects of this process are examined. Eighty-one kindergarten children from four classrooms were asked to tell a story both verbally and graphically. They were encouraged to include drawing, writing, or both on their paper. Then they were asked to tell the story that they had produced graphically. The children were students in one of four classrooms from a single school system that were identified as: (a) most developmentally appropriate beliefs and practices; (b) developmentally appropriate …
Alternative Education And Social Change In Brazil: A History And Case Study., Maria De Lourdes Nunes
Alternative Education And Social Change In Brazil: A History And Case Study., Maria De Lourdes Nunes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In contrast to the elitism of the Brazilian formal education system are the efforts of educators at federal universities in promoting educational alternatives for the socioeconomically underprivileged population. Having reached its peak in the late 1950s and early 1960s and culminating with Paulo Freire's successful "conscientization" experiment in Angicos, educational alternatives were revitalized in the 1980s upon the nation's "return to democracy." Since then, Brazilian universities have committed themselves to contribute to the struggle for social transformation. Mission and objective statements of individual universities express their attitude towards active involvement in the process of alleviating educational and socioeconomic inequities which …

From Their Perspective: Issues Of Schooling And Family Culture Of Four African-American First Generation College Students., Neari Francois Warner
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The diversity of students entering today's colleges and universities makes it increasingly important that educators, theorists and other scholars strive toward a fuller understanding of the life conditions of minority groups. This research is designed to provide insight into the processes, pressures and people that shape the lives of one particular minority group, the African American non-traditional, first generation college student. In this research, I examine the school and family experiences of four of these students in an attempt (1) to provide data that contribute to the refutation of the stereotypical images and myths that are so pervasively used to …

Centralization And Decentralization: The Relationship Of Bureaucracy, Autonomy And The Principalship In Elementary Schools., Cheryl Berot Boutte
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Throughout the last decade, parents and communities have continued to press for more control over their schools in an attempt to improve performance. Members of the educational community have begun calling for school restructuring to return decision making power to the school site professionals. These calls for the decentralization of our highly centralized school systems have prompted educators, researchers and political scientists to examine the organizational settings in which schools operate. This study investigated the influence of organizational structure, namely centralized bureaucracy and decentralized autonomy on school leadership and the relationship of that leadership to the school's culture. The study …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research studied dialogue journal writing, as it occurred between a teacher and twenty-one students in a French III high school. Results on attitude questionnaire indicated that dialogue journals helped students overcome their fear of the written form and increase their self-confidence and willingness to write. By demystifying the writing process, writing in their dialogue journals helped these students develop positive attitudes. The results on writing proficiency pre and post-tests indicated that students performed as well or better than students after four years of a foreign language in a high school setting or four semesters of college instruction. The dialogue …

An Exploration Of Principal Change Facilitator Style, Teacher Bureaucratic And Professional Orientations, And Teacher Receptivity To Change. (Volumes I And Ii)., Sheila Weaks Chauvin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The primary purpose of this study was to utilize conceptions of principal change facilitator style, bureaucratic and professional orientations and teacher receptivity to change to extend our understanding of schools as organizations and to develop a comprehensive theoretical conception of planned organizational change in schools. A secondary purpose of this study was to report the results of a series of data analyses used to refine operational definitions of the study variables. This study is the first known in the literature to examine relationships among these variables in concert with a common set of schools, principals and teachers. The sample for …
Re-Thinking Readings And Writing In The Study Of Literature., Mary Ann Doyle
Re-Thinking Readings And Writing In The Study Of Literature., Mary Ann Doyle
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
While the field of academic literary studies continues to engage in contested debate over defining and revising its curricula (Graff, 1987), teachers remain situated at the sometimes contradictory and often isolated intersections of theory and practice. Decisions made about writing in literature classes, selecting texts for course syllabi, and pedagogical style are most often negotiated at the level of the individual teacher, who may or may not be responding to an increasing incidence of departmental restructuring, recommendations, prohibitions, or political pressures. Though there is no scarcity of disagreements and accusations about what revisionary approaches 'mean', (Fieldnotes, Spring 1992), there is …
Cosmology And Curriculum: A Vision For An Ecozoic Age., Angela T. Lydon
Cosmology And Curriculum: A Vision For An Ecozoic Age., Angela T. Lydon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The text of this dissertation explores interconnections between cosmology and curriculum. I believe the demands of an Ecozoic Age will initiate a reconceptualizing of curriculum. Further, I believe the particular cosmological perspective I advance can help us with this reconceptualization. Chapter 1 utilizes the multi-faceted insights of scientific, historical, and speculative thought. The texts used in this chapter incorporate an engagement with past cultures (Ong, Eliade), with contemporary theoretical perspectives (Munitz, Haught, and Stafford), and with a scholarship that envisions alternative futures (Bohm). Chapter 2 uncovers how modernity's relationship to the earth is rooted in the scientific, political, and social …
Autobiographical Amnesia: Memory, Myth, Curriculum., Gregory Michael Nixon
Autobiographical Amnesia: Memory, Myth, Curriculum., Gregory Michael Nixon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Autobiography in curriculum theory and practice is being more and more acknowledged as a major force leading toward the development of reflectively analytical teachers, reflexive practitioners, and discursively self-aware individuals. I look to two vital aspects of self-narration to explore. I speak firstly of memory, without which narrative continuity would be impossible. Memory is as involved with learning as it is with storytelling, and I would agree with Krell (1978) that "inquiry into memory and the theory of pedagogy go hand in hand" (p. 131). I eschew the models of memory provided by the behavioral sciences, empirical psychology, cognitive psychology, …

Common Sense In Formation For The Common Good - Justice White's Dissents In The Parochial School Aid Cases: Patron Of Lost Causes Or Precursor Of Good News, John J. Coughlin
Journal Articles
This Article envisions a new order for public education in this country. Pursuant to the new order, a free market under appropriate government regulation rather than unchecked political authority would determine the flow of public aid to various schools. Such an order would enable parents to choose what kind of school, secular or sectarian, presents the most desirable educational environment. The new arrangement would also provide incentives for quality education, as schools now run by the state government would have to compete on an even field with schools that currently receive no public funds.
It has been almost twenty years …

Educating Baby: Preparing Children For Future School Success, Jill R. Bergman
Educating Baby: Preparing Children For Future School Success, Jill R. Bergman
Graduate Research Papers
Parents generally are their children's first teachers. Children learn more in their first five years than at any other five year time period in their life. Ninety percent of all requisite intellectual skills are learned by children before they enter school (Disibio, 1984). "Some researchers suggest that maternal socialization, and teaching patterns in particular, are strong predictors of later intellectual and cognitive performances" (Moreno, 1991, p. 395). Therefore, parents play extremely important parts in the education of their children.
