An Investigation Of Parental And Teacher Attitudes Toward Appropriate Activities For Kindergarten, Joyce R. Kinney
An Investigation Of Parental And Teacher Attitudes Toward Appropriate Activities For Kindergarten, Joyce R. Kinney
Student Work
Children's adjustment to kindergarten is an issue which is of concern to both educators and parents. This study explores three areas which were thought to have a relationship to children's adjustment to school: parents' attitudes toward appropriate activities for preschoolers and kindergarteners; how these attitudes compare between groups of parents based on the preschool that their children attended; and parents' perceptions of continuity between their child's preschool and kindergarten programs. Of particular interest in this study was the relationship between Westside Community School's Early Childhood programs and its kindergartens.

A Latter-Day Saint Home Education: Passing On A Goodly Heritage, Abbie Jane Birch
A Latter-Day Saint Home Education: Passing On A Goodly Heritage, Abbie Jane Birch
Theses and Dissertations
Education is examined within the context of religious beliefs and values found in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). Education is defined as the process of becoming like God. An investigation is conducted into the stewardship and responsibility parents have for the education of their children. This responsibility is determined to be a sacred stewardship that cannot simply be delegated to others in society. All education is shown to be religious in nature. Conflicts between the beliefs and values of different members of society are found to be at the heart of many of the difficulties in …

Providing An Escape For Inner-City Children: Creating A Federal Remedy For Educational Ills Of Poor Urban Schools, Amy J. Schmitz
Faculty Publications
Children in impoverished, urban areas attend dangerous and decrepit schools, where they receive low quality education which fails to prepare them for meaningful participation in the community. Many states, however, provide no legislative or judicial remedy for these children, who desperately need vocational and educational skills to enable them to escape from the deprivation of their urban landscape. Meanwhile, federal officials speak
Risk Management For Lawyers, William H. Fortune, Dulaney O’Roark
Risk Management For Lawyers, William H. Fortune, Dulaney O’Roark
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Lawyers are under siege. We have become objects of scorn, ridicule, and occasional hatred. If you take your child to the Stephen Spielberg movie Jurassic Park, be prepared for the cheers when the cloned Tyrannosaurus Rex gobbles the lawyer—not a bad guy at all—cowering in the outhouse. In San Francisco a client burst into a California law firm and killed eight and wounded six persons before taking his own life. In response, the president of the California bar linked lawyer-bashing to hate crimes and prevailed on the Miller Brewing Company to withdraw a television commercial depicting a "lawyer-roping rodeo" …

Education And Falling Wages, Lester C. Thurow
Education And Falling Wages, Lester C. Thurow
New England Journal of Public Policy
Start with a statistic that should be burned into the brain of every American. If one looks at young males eighteen to twenty-five years of age who work full-time for a full year — eight hours a day, five days a week, fifty-two weeks a year — 18 percent of them could not earn a poverty-line income ($12,183 in 1990 dollars) in 1980. Ten years later, in 1990, that number had risen to 40 percent. Among young female workers eighteen to twenty-four years of age, the percentage unable to earn a poverty-line income despite full-time, full-year work rises from 29 …

Teaching Parallel Computing To Freshmen, Donald Johnson, David Kotz, Fillia Makedon
Teaching Parallel Computing To Freshmen, Donald Johnson, David Kotz, Fillia Makedon
Dartmouth Scholarship
Parallelism is the future of computing and computer science and should therefore be at the heart of the CS curriculum. Instead of continuing along the evolutionary path by introducing parallel computation “top down” (first in special junior-senior level courses), we are taking a radical approach and introducing parallelism at the earliest possible stages of instruction. Specifically, we are developing a completely new freshman-level course on data structures that integrates parallel computation naturally, and retains the emphasis on laboratory instruction. This will help to steer our curriculum as expeditiously as possible toward parallel computing.
Our approach is novel in three distinct …

Relationships Among Teachers' Efficacy, Teachers' Locus-Of-Control, And Student Achievement, David L. Burrell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if teacher effectiveness, as measured by value-added gain scores on student achievement, was related to the teacher personality characteristics of efficacy and locus of control. The value-added mean gain scores for each teacher were correlated with teachers' scores on the Rand Corporation Efficacy Scale and the Rose and Medway Teacher Locus of Control Scale. A multiple regression analysis was used to determine if these teacher characteristics along with selected demographic variables could be used as good predictors of achievement gain. The population consisted of 132 middle school teachers across five subject areas …
